Every player has a beginning and an end. I think most Blues fans are of the opinion that if he re-injures the knee he'd be a fair chance on just calling it quits. He's already back training and all the rest of it so realistically he's just as much chance doing it there than he is on Saturday night.

The alternative is recover fully and play footy for another 3 years when the blues have a real shot at a flag.
That is not correct, there is a correlation between recovery time and reoccurrence. Less risk playing next year, with a greater chance of a flag too!
If this was true and verified by data, why are the vast majority of players given 12 month rehab/conditioning programmes before being brought back for the proper stuff? It is a gamble until we know for sure that 6 months offers 0% more risk than 12 after an ACL (especially a 3rd ACL).
Dochs put his hand up to play and it's his risk to decide on imo. Club will just be picking the best team we can.
I'm not disagreeing that its a bigger risk of re-injury pre 12 months, what I'm saying is he's gone superhuman on his rehab to get back for the finals and has been in full training for 5 weeks now. He's not going to back off from that now and wait another 7 months to get back into full ROM exercises and intensity etc, he'd be joining in pre season day 1 where he'd be pretty much just as likely to re-injure the knee as he is playing on Saturday given he'd be coming back in November/December where he'd still be well ahead of schedule.
He's a 'test'. I definitely wouldn't be banking on it if he's rolling around with this at training
But surely you can see that is totally different to risking an acl on the first week of finals. If this was the grand final we were talking about, easy decision to play Docherty.
