Surely there’s a better solution such as this. Very strange stuff, apparently the MCC were very surprised and they are hosting.

There was some suggestion that Leigh Matthews’ comments about Collingwood “celebrating their flag” with the doco (how dare they) may have impacted it and they don’t want to be seen to be over celebrating.

Just weird all round and looks like a cockup.
Collingwood wouldn't care less what those in the media are saying.

They'll do what they believe is best for them and back themselves.

More like a flamingo-up - like a cockup, but much, much bigger.

Interesting game this one.
I reckon Sydney are the genuine article this season and will be for a number of years to come. Great young list and Heeney was superb in midfield last week.

He is the key to me. If he can elevate his game, it gives them a trio of midfield stars (Warner + Gulden) who can overpower any opposition.

Gulden has been suffering from long COVID for around a month now, so hopefully he is a bit better this week.

Is Tom Mitchell looking for a new club yet?
Slipped into Carlton training without anyone seeing him this week - noticed him when he scrubbed a kick across the ground - carried him out of the ground screaming … “please…don’t send me back there!!”. Very sad.

I'm still head shaking and jowl wobbling about the innovative game scheduling that the AFL have implemented. I think it's a bit smarty pants, a bit how good me. Sometimes it's better to keep your hands on your particulars and off the game.

Having said that, this could be a real cracker. Mcrae was very sober and honest last week, you know the Pies will go up a level this week.

Swans have been accused of lacking ticker recent seasons, having lost the bloods thing. This could be a nice occassion to get back the Paul You'll Have To Kill Me First Kelly spirit, on enemy territory, with thousands of smelly Pies fans screaming and belching with lustre. It's a nice test for the Swans.

Punters seem unconvinced, as I am, and I think the flag unfurling will get pies juices flowing and they'll run out victors.

Though as anyone else here around 60 or so may remember, there was a nice flag unfurling misfire in round 1 1970 when the Roys beat up Tigers, in front of Queen Elizabeth number 2, in a mad game of goal scoring and aggression. Tigers ended missing finals altogether that year. Footy's a funny game. Will it amuse tonight?

Your maths needs some work. 1,163 square metres smaller than the 17,719 square metre MCG. 1,163 is only 6.6% (not “almost 10%”) of 17,719. So it’s a negligible difference; the way most people talk you’d think the SCG was only 75% of the size of the MCG.

Bigger playing area than Docklands, Giants Stadium and Adelaide Oval. Similar playing area to Optus Stadium and the GABBA. Yet none of those are constantly referred to as small grounds…

Like I said, if we lose it’ll be nothing to do with us not being able to handle some gigantic ground compared to ours.
Dear Prof Zevon
I am struggling with a maths issue. In Whately and NNF Buckley SEN preview of tonight’s game, I struggled to count more than one team being mentioned. Is only one team playing ?

Regards, Horrie

It is the new age I guess.
Maybe the thinking is that was last year and we don't want to get ahead of ourselves for this year.

Perhaps they are worried they may upset or inspire the opposition by unfurling it at a time closer to commencement.

I don't get it personally, as flags don't come around that often, so embrace it and put it out there for all to see.

Soon you wont have to win the Grand Final anyway.
Melbourne already feel like they won everything on expected scores.

Next will be, as long as you identify as a Premiership winner, then you should get a cup also.

Either the world is going mad, or I am just fast becoming a grumpy old man.

Perhaps a bit of both.

You are fine kiddo.

Great idea to put the clubs who played last weekend on early this weekend so we get to see them again.

Should be a good game but it would be a lot better if they had some of the other clubs in the league play first.

Not really. These two teams have easily the largest supporter bases.

Yep, only one team playing tonight.

It’s us. We’re the team.
