Idk... First game of the new rules so I get that there will be inconsistencies and adjustments needed, but for me there's just no good call here other than to ball it up. Walsh can't do anything without risking injury to himself here.

I’m not an umpiring expert but isn’t that tackle just a little bit high?

Surely Walsh got a free kick in this instance?

Right?

Safe as houses. Was Voss safe at 4-9 last season,?
It's only numpties who yell sack the coach after a bad season or bad patch.
Maybe though Port supporters have a case after 11 years.

It was 4 wins, 8 losses and 1 draw carlton had before they ended up with a 13 win, 9 loss and 1 draw at the end of that 2023 season.

Port's midfield is looking really pedestrian with Wines, Boak and no Rozee, they just couldn't apply any real pressure on Carlton's mids and eventually the damn wall broke and the blues were rampant giving their forwards far too much ball.

Great win Carlton. Time to rebuild Port, start at the top.
Port wont rebuild if they make finals in 2024

Josh Carr needs to give him the Sam Mitchell treatment at year end.

Theres no way they can let him go again in 2025.
Ken Hinkley will coach in 2025.

I have no issues with Port Not making finals. Freo have their 1st rounder in 2024.

Yeah fair point about the legs but I’ve always been of the opinion that if an arm is free then the ball is live so either you find a way to get that ball on your hand or foot or you’re done. Unlucky but that’s the rule. Will probably force players to either try and move it quicker or not carry it so loosely.
It's been the rule for one match, and that match exposed that it's not a great change.

In this:

... you can see that Drew has Walsh's right hand held behind him and Soldo has his left leg raised while Walsh is trapped under his armpit. In this situation, Walsh could not move from the second he took the ball - as he is carrying the weight of Drew and Soldo on him, locking his legs below him while his left arm is pinned - but because the ball was uncovered the umpire paid a HTB free kick despite a legal disposal being impossible.

This sport used to celebrate and protect the person who wanted the ball more. This rule condemns them.

Well as of next week we would have played all top four and top eight teams also played GWS, Freo, Geelong when they were undefeated and still have to play Essendon and Geelong next two games - what a super tough run of games. Proud of this group they have been through alot together playing for a big club and weight of expectation

Putting Finlayson into the ruck in the last quarter and allowing De Koning to feed Carlton 3 straight goals. Add it to the list of big brain moves by Hinkley.

Selecting Dixon when it is embarrassingly evident he is cooked and shouldve been retired after the showdown. Playing an injured Rozee on a 6 day hamstring. The list goes on for Hinkley, if it wasn’t evident enough to anyone previously than this year there is no denying. He doesn’t have a clue and he reeks of desperation. As he has for the past 7-8 years.
Blame your team not your coach - they were smashed.

HTB change was hit and miss.

Umpires looked so focussed on paying HTB they forgot about all the other rules.

Walsh tackled immediately over the shoulder, clearly high, but umps so desperate to pay HTB they completely ignore the high contact.

One new interpretation I disagree with is that having one arm free does not mean you had prior opportunity to properly dispose of the football. Are you meant to drop it and hope it makes contact with your foot? Do not like this.

Also where has dropping the ball or improper disposal gone? At least a dozen times Port Adelaide players just let the ball go when tackled - zero free kicks paid.

If this is a sign of what’s to come players just need to let go of the footy when tackled and they will be fine. Don’t even bother making a proper effort.. as long as the ball isn’t in your possession there will be no whistle.
I'd be interested to know how many were called each way?
Wasn't Dimma's criticism last week about the number of combined tackles in the game and the lack of HTB calls?
Blues had 75 tackles and I've seen it mentioned that we got 1 HTB(?).
Port had 60 tackles and seemed to have 4-5 HTB calls. They were also unlucky not to have a few more based on how hot they were calling them.
We must be tackling differently to every other team.

I have a rule, don’t tip Port in games with crowds greater than 40k. Dunno the stats on it but seems any game we have in front of a big crowd we choke it. With the rain keeping people away I’m gonna tip Port
Seems your 40k rule is still in full effect. It's an interesting stat.

The odd thing is the umps were focussing on no prior HTB when that wasn't even the change. The change was only meant to be the timing of the whistle. The Walsh one was a shocking decision, as was the Weitering one in the first qtr he also had no prior and was not in a realistic position to make a genuine attempt.

The most concerning one for me though was the port adelaide HTB in the first qtr that led to the 50m penalty and goal. He had no prior, and got a kick away as quick as what the circumstance would allow but got pinged. Absolute awful decision.

The weird thing is people seemed so happy about this change but i saw this happening a mile away. If anyone says those decisions were good and less confusing they are lying to themselves. Not only is the change shithouse, it's also too big of a change to make mid-season, it's completely changed the look of the game you can't be doing that half way through a season, what an absolute mare from the AFL.

Looking at last night it's pretty clear the no prior side of it should be reverted back to the way it was. Its the ones with prior that people have an issue with and should be subject to stricter htb calls with the quicker whistle.

Here is a list of things that scares Ken the most...

Prime time football is scary.
Big crowds are scary.
Playing a contending team is scary.
Showdowns are scary.
Night time games is scary.
Finals are scary.
Winning is scary.

The things that Ken does not find scary...

Post game losses.
Media conferences.
Bingo (of a press conference kind).
Contract renewals .

He's an interesting cat, Ken. Was pretty much laughing it up with Voss at the end on the boundary.

He must feel he has some job security the way he acts.

Good game of football.
The difference in the two teams was there for all to see in the last qtr.
Cripps and co went nuts and Port lacked the talent to have any answers.

One fan base know their team is on the rise, the other however overrate their team in a massive way.
Port supporters should not be disappointed, as they are consistently higher on the ladder than where they should be.

They have shown they are a bottom of the eight team at best but are usually up around the top four.

Well done Carlton, you did what you needed to do in the last qtr, when it was time to stand up.
Well done Port, you hung around the mark for the first three qtrs, before it got too much.

Game went as expected really, with little to no surprises.
