With the COLA being phased out, there was only going to be so much they could do with trades anyway, even if they did front end a contract or two. The AFL was adamant that the COLA had little to do with Buddy signing, so why the about face?
If Sydney does lose a big name or two at the end of next season, they might be forced into grabbing a top up, and ditching the COLA early. That doesn't hurt the "poached", only the lesser paid players. They'll be left to manage their mortgages and expenses, with their once guaranteed money disappearing from under them
I hope the AFLPA sticks up for your rookies and academy pickups, to protect them from this bullshit. Baffled by how this came about

Agreed. It just seems like such a ridiculous knee jerk reaction, even by AFL standards that there has to be something big to this story.
I reckon the full details will come out eventually.

Unbelievable, the AFL is so far from a level playing field these days it is ridiculous, the whole system is farked, penalising a team for working within the rules they are given is just absurd. This isn't Carlton and salary cap breaches, this isn't Melbourne and tanking, this isn't Adelaide and dodgy 3rd party deals, what we have done is all above board and we cop this!

They repeatedly have said GWS will thrive and survive.
The only way to garner them quick support is to torch us.
It is not a conspiracy but a blatant use of force. As soon as GWS get some results and beats the Pies to a final berth then it will be pared back and the VFL will get back on track.

I think the best course of action is to simply defy them. Trade someone and clearly state despite the new directive we will run the books and drafting strategy under the old rules that allowed for a phasing of COLA etc like we assumed was happening a month ago. If any punitive action was to arise from the AFL then we take them to court after they attempt to fine or block us.
It would bring the ALFPA onside as they would have to defend the new contract of the player and current contracts in place.
It would also put the ball in the AFL's court and cause them to act they might just baulk.
Can't accept it, got to fight it and one way to do that is just ignore it and call their bluff.

I agree with this. The best way imo is to test it. We should defy it and go ahead and trade for someone Patful/Ryder? I don't know, actually, get on the phone to Essendon, trade for Ryder, get them to accept anything, let the AFL deliver a response to that. See how they react, the Bombers would love to put the AFL under more heat.

AFL explains the reasons behind restrictions on the Swans
The AFL Commission has placed restrictions on the Sydney Swans regarding trading and recruiting free agents.
These restrictions are part of the phasing out of the ‘Cost of Living Allowance,’ often referred to as ‘COLA’
The Cost of Living Allowance means the Swans are required to pay an additional 9.8 per cent of the salary cap to all players to compensate for the higher cost of living in Sydney.
The Cost of Living Allowance will be phased out and replaced in 2017.
What are we doing?
The AFL has informed the Sydney Swans that they cannot trade players into their club in the next two years unless they want to bring an immediate end to the Cost of Living Allowance.
The club will also be unable to lure restricted or unrestricted free agents before the end of 2017.
Why are we doing it?
There are several important reasons of varying degrees of logic behind this decision.
Massive over-correction
We really went a bit far with this Cost of Living stuff.
The Cost of Living Allowance allowed Sydney a bit of an advantage to other clubs.
It became pretty unpopular and we felt the need to get things back on an even keel.
Of course, like anyone that feels like they’ve made a bit of a mistake and are a bit embarrassed by it, we have massively overcorrected the situation.
Like when you forget your girlfriend’s birthday and make it up to her by upsizing her meal the next time you are at McDonalds. You even eat in. No drive thru this time.

Have you ever had Eddie bang on at you for years? Well yes, of course you have, so you know what it’s like.
After a while you just want it to stop. You would do anything in your power to just stop the noise.
This should really do the trick. For a few days at least until he gets a bee in his bonnet about something else.
Precedent
Following the rules of the AFL and its policies is no protection from arbitrary decisions.
Not long ago we fined Melbourne for being found not guilty of tanking.
Now everyone knows they did it and we could have found them guilty, but it’s more fun to say they were not guilty and fine them anyway.
Can’t think of too many jurisdictions that do that. Russia? Probably bits of the Middle East?
In this case, the Swans didn’t even break any rules but we’re punishing them anyway.
This means you can now be found not guilty and be punished, actually not be guilty and be punished and potentially, be guilty and be punished.
Too good at it
Sydney made one tactical error. They used the allowance properly.
They could have gone and got Heath Shaw like the Giants, but no.
Instead, they stole Buddy fromour team the Giants.
By using it properly, they drew attention to it. Why couldn’t they have just tried to finish eighth or ninth each year?
They could have had COLA till the end of time.
Felt like it
Partly, we at the Commission just felt like it.
If you’ve seen the movie The Hunt for Red October you would remember that Russian submarine captains like to perform a move called a ‘crazy Ivan.’
A ‘crazy Ivan’ involves suddenly altering course for no reason to see if anyone is following you.
It keeps them guessing.
The AFL has studied this movie and we like to occasionally throw in a ‘crazy Ivan’ of our own every now and then.
Just for the hell of it really.
We’re also pretty fond of doing Sean Connery’s Russian accent. Sometimes we do it for whole Commission meetings.
Anyway, that should explain everything.

As great as Titus is, he brings up a great point. Would this have all been OK if the Swans had simply aimed for mediocrity? Let's just finish 7th, 8th or 9th, not push any buttons and remain subservient to the overlords in Melbourne.

What would happen if the playing group got together and said scrap our cola now, would it put us under the cap or will they still count he cola payments for 2015?
Scrap COLA now will result in us immediately being in breach of the cap as Ireland said we will need to get rid of "3-4" best 22 players.
TLDR= its not going to happen.

That did come to mind actually. Would be interesting to see if the leadership group could get that up. It's clearly what the AFL have in mind with their second option (drop the COLA immediately).

It surely could be possible, contracts get redone (with the agreement of all parties) all the time.
Eddie is the mouthpiece. The other blokes are too clever to engage in public slanging matches. Eddie hides behind the journalist hat. It's perfect result for all concerned, including the VFL.

The problem I see is the afl would not allow it, clubs were allowed to rewrite contracts and remove the cola etc, there is nothing stopping clubs ie us rewriting deals such as buddy's to reduce money.
I think the afl would say yes you can rewrite the deals so you are not physically paying the cola but it will assumed in the cap
