lisle is a chance next week, i think we will load up with the talls and not make the same mistake we did against the cats. Change things around a bit. Stratton in our backline makes it SIGNIFICANTLY better, is better than schoenmakers and murphy by himself. We could actually have a decent backline if clarko played guys he should be playing back there like lisle and cheney, from what i have seen of cheney he is better than murphy.

Im going in with no expectations at all really, in fact if we lose probably wont be that upset, this year were a good team but not the best team and the cattle we need to really challenge you guys will be sitting in the stands 1 in particular (roughead), next year we will be much more of a threat if we stay healthy in the big man department.
True v unlucky to lose Boofhead, I'd say he's a bigger loss than Dawes was for us although we'd be significantly weakened if DAwes wasn't back.
But anything can happen on a given day, also worried about the week off since it's statistically been a loser so far this year, perhaps due to the sub rule.

despite what we have seen this year, i still rated the hawks our best opponent. in that game earlier this year they were well down on experience but did quite well, in fact very well, and the 7 goal margin flattered us.

however things have changed for us too - all for the better. we have a full list to choose from, and the important point is the 21st & 22nd players are vital pieces, not just making up the numbers.

i must say im getting tired of the chatter about our need to cover them, the need to stop hodge, franklin etc. there are 4 midfielders in our side who are all amongst the best in the league, who are all in career best form. how the hell are the hawks going to stop them ? we have the best contested mark in the game, who has a great engine to allow him to run all day. and he kicks straight now. we have quality crummers who have been doing the job all year. best of all we have the best defence in the league, and last weeks game bought back into top form 2 players who have been lacking all year, in maxwell & o'brien. the others havent missed a beat. our only loss this year has been in the ruck division. relying on an out of sorts & inconsistent jolly, or the 2nd rate wood. but the hawks arent exactly the ruck specialists either. in fact id back jolly to still beat bailey anyway.

well there you have it. every reason to beat them, and with ease. i still think far too many fans & posters here are stuck with the image of what the hawks did to us in 2007-09. our team, and especially the best parts, are all mature bodies now, and cant be monstered by the hawks. we beat them with ease last year, and nothing has changed this year.

getting thru the game with no injuries is the only wish. the rest is certain.

Re: Prelim vs Hawks

We were missing Franklin, Rioli, Lewis, Sewel, Roughead, Gillam, Stratton, Renouf.

Franklin played and got destroyed by Tarrant

Roughhead and Renouf and non-factors it's like us talking about Nathan Brown and Brad Dick

Hawks have had 2 poor finals games, they don't look the level to even trouble us, I doubt they'll get to 10 goals. Think we'll comfortably get that 10 goal lead by early 3rd quarter and cruise out the match.

Changes from last time [that I expect]

OUT: Buckley, Rounds, Fasolo
IN: Johnson, Beams, Didak

OUT: Savage, Cheney, Breust, Young, Lisle
IN: Lewis, Rioli, Sewell, Stratton, Shoenmakers

Some juicy ins for both, but particularly the Hawks. We played well that day, but we all know we can play better. Obviously the danger men are obvious, and Statton back in certainly strengthens their defense. But the game will be won around the stoppages. Some good matchups will ensue.

Swan, Pendlebury, Thomas, Ball, Wellingham vs. Hodge, Mitchell, Sewell, Lewis, Burgoyne.

There's not a lot splitting those two groups. Both have others to rotate through, e.g. Beams, Shiels, Krak, Rioli etc. We'll need to get on top in the ruck, and actually win some centre clearances this week. I'm confident our defense can contain their forward line if it works as well as it did against the Eagles, whereas, if Cloke and particularly Dawes turn up this week [he has been quite average since returning], they won't be able to contain ours with Leigh Brown also rotating through. We certainly can't allow Gibson playing loose like he did last night.

Interesting to note that both Hodge and Mitchell dominated against us last time, which would normally indicate we got smashed! But they didn't have much help around the stoppages with Lewis and Sewell both missing. Should be a tight encounter.

Roughead a non factor ???

Yeah Franklin played on Maxwell Tarrant and Reid i would not expect him to beat them.

Couldn't believe how slow Sewell is now - reminded me of Licuria in his final year. Much happier with Sewell in the side than a quick youngster like Savage.
Can't see how Hawks will kick a winning score with their flooding game plan. Franklin will be one on three again as Clarko hasn't changed anything with his structures. Cyril sounded defeated already last night when considering O'Brien as his likely opponent.

We only do that when Clarkson knows we have won because he dose not want to give away his gameplan happened against Carlton and others.

Re: Prelim vs Hawks

I don't think he was saying Roughead out is good for the pies. But that even if he was in he would not have made a difference.

No, he was saying he is a non-factor because he is out for the year. Just like Nathan Brown and Brad Dick for us.

the pie midfield will dismantle the hawks. hodge lewis sewell burgoyne mitchell - all very good players, but all have one thing in common, they are slow in terms of genuine leg speed. collingwood's run and spread from stoppages is the best in the competition, and that is the area where they will destroy haw next week. jolly will dominate bailey and hale giving the pie runners an extra advantage, while the effects of haw having to play a hard game virtually to the death last night while the pies watched from a corporate box cannot be underestimated. it will be say tues at least before the hawks are over the effects of last night while the pies are fresh and timing their preparation to the minute

it is also impossible to see haw kicking a winning score unless buddy kicks a dozen. the pie defence was at its best v the weagles, and it is hard to see the hawks kicking more than 10 goals next week. can they keep the pies to less? maybe in the 1st half if they kick badly

the prelims are nothing but a mere formality really and we can then get on with the GF we have waiting for all year which could be an epic against a champion team in the cats

Roughead and Renouf are non-factors because they wont play this week. Much like Dick and Brown are non-factors for us because they wont be playing. Understand?

Obviously if Roughead was playing he would be a factor.

Re: Prelim vs Hawks

Yep absolutely demolished by Tarrant Reid and Maxwell.

If three blokes played on Franklin, you were more than welcome to kick the ball to the two unmanned Hawthorn blokes if you wanted to. Maybe you should take your issue up with Al Clarkson, you'd think a good coach would take advantage of two completely unopposed players... wouldn't he?

Nice sig
Good to see you finally admit that if Cox didn't get injured Jolly would continue to get pantsed like he was in the first quarter.

Loving your calls to drop Rusty too :thumbsu:

Hawthorn were fairly avg. last nite. Sydney are a bottom 4 side on the MCG & they didn't come to play in the 1st half. Their midfield was absolutely smashed in the 3rd quarter & they lost/broke even with inside 50 count for the entire night.

WC on the G' are a bigger threat than Hawthorn.

I think we should win, but not sure it will be a smacking like some predict. Reckon most are a little over confident in here. We looked pretty average against the Eagles tbh, and nearly had it snatched off us in the last quarter. In fact, we've looked pretty average for the last few weeks. I think a few are expecting us to just switch on for the prelim. Last year I'd have agreed. This year, not so sure.

Pies by 3 or 4 goals.

I'm with those who are a bit worried.

I certainly have confidence that we are the better team and our best football will get us a win. Confident that the club and players are doing everything right, and will be in the position to bring their best footy on Friday. The return to form of Maxwell, O'Brien, and Shaw last week was pleasing, and the 22 who line up should be full of confidence.

Having said that I'll still be worrying and stressing out all week, it's just what some of us do.

A nice comfortable win, no injuries and take the same 22 into the GF would be perfect.
