With Hurn playing, it was debateable he was even the best kick on the ground...

Hurn shanked a few tonight still ended up getting 85% disposal eff tho, and didnt see him use many of his long accurate kicks, which i saw drummond use a few times tonight so i would say drummond won the battle.

Rischitelli was outstanding last night! That was clearly his best game for the Lions. Forget him as a tagger or half-forward, he clearly stamped himself as a rolled gold mid-fielder, who was capable of generating clearances by playing "in and under" and also giving us excellent drive playing "outside." Some great tackles too. Saved a certain goal in the first quarter and put pressure on opponents all night. His pass to Brown, who goaled, in the last quarter was a match highlight.

Rischitelli's Statistics: 28 Disposals (10 kicks / 18 handballs), 6 Marks (1 contested), 6 Inside 50's, 7 Tackles, 4 1st Possessions, 4 Clearances, 2 Score Assists, 0 Critical Errors.

Surprisingly Andrew Stafford didn't mention him in his best players or the match report published in The Age. Even more suprisingly, some Brisbane supporters failed to give him a vote on the Player of the Year thread. I can understand lazy and unintelligent journalism, but what gives with us Lions supporters on BigFooty? Do I need to start a Rischitelli Bandwagon?

As for Brennan ... could this be the "break out year?" He was incredible! I am going to have a lazy few on him for the Brownlow. If he wasn't pipped by Rischitelli, he had to have polled 3 votes.

Go Lions!

P.S. Banfield's first game was excellect. A very exciting prospect. Very hard to see number 3 getting a game while Banfield is in the side.

Was at the game. Banfield was terrific. For all those people knocking him - you obviously weren't at the game and watched it on telly. Fantastic he was. OK he had a couple of clangers, but so did Black and he dropped a sitter of a mark.

Clark must of been not well. Lethargic. NicNat killed us in the first half, but really unsighted in the last half.

Raines was solid. Two obvious turn-overs - reminded me of Harding. No pressure and then kicks to the opposition.

Brennan put on a clinic. BOG. His skills are sublime and is very exciting to watch.

Goose too slow. By about 5m. Didn't see much of him actually.

Good to see they haven't worked out there kick-ins. Still as average and as slow as ever.

Staker great. I know he spent some time down back, but I prefer him in forward line.

Riska was great. I was questioning his inclusion in the team, but gee he proved his worth last night.

The engine kept at it all night - black, power, rich. Actually I thought Rich had a quiet game. Thought Leuey too was better for the run and got better as the game went on.

Fev and Brown - brilliant all game. Yeah Fev's inacurracy and a couple of dropped marks was frustrating...but you have to appreciate the potential of these two both kicking a bag....very exciting to watch.

The ruck duel ended up being a bit of a flop didn't it? Cox was unfit and Clark sick, they both had horrible games. NicNat ran out of legs and Leuey probably had the best all round effort.

Dissapointed that we didn't get to see all 4 fit and firing.
The fact that , in the last, we had Mitch and Leuey on the ground at the same time ( not injured or totally spent ) is a massive, massive bonus. This frees up Jarhead and look what he can do ..

I can't believe people are having a crack at Banfield. It was his first game for FS. Some players in their first game don't even get to see ball that alone generate the drive that he did. Seriously what do you expect from him....three brownlow points.

Loads of fantastic individual performances. Really obvious that it is going to take us a while to stitch everything together as a team.

Our cohesion was really poor, a lot of the time we looked like we were playing with very little system. But we were just so solid across the whole team that we got away with it.

Knew that on paper our depth was so much better, great to actually see it, so many of our ‘peripheral’ players were excellent.

Give us a few games to work on our structures and it is going to be a very , very exciting season.

Couldn,t agree more. He was terrific at the contest and provided some great spark. Could of had himself a goal too.

Lets remember J Brown didn't get a stat in his debut.

Luke Power was absolutely inspirational in that third quarter, the man

single-handedly kept us in the game, diving under packs and kicking goals

He was BOG for mine

I agree that Brennan had a good game. We all gloss over his clangers and incomplete plays when it suits. As much as I love him as a player I flinch evertime he gets the ball. He could definately win a game for us but he can as easily lose a game for us with rediculous moves. I wish he showed some consistency.
Lions were a little lost at times, but that is expected in our first run. Will be a very very hard side to beat come round 5 or 6.

Will have to agree to disagree on this one.

I was thrilled with him, I really was. Watching the TV replay may change my mind but geez he showed amazing signs and amazing intent for a debutant. Execution wasn't ideal and he stuffed up a bit on the finish but once he adjusts to the pace, he'll be an absolute gem!

No. Looked just as good on tv. Very exciting.

“…when you’ve got that internal little bit, that fire in the belly, the will to win, and they showed that in spades tonight.” - MV

“I must admit, out of tonight, I’m a bit in awe of our group" - MV

freddie cues GG to link last nights highlights package to Ace of Spades;)

:footy:'s back and I  it.

** must say, I could regularly hear the Liiiiii-oooooonnns chant in the effects mic all night… kudos to those giving it a go – the foundations for its return are there to build on. :thumbsu:

 Brown.

 the way Toddy goes about his footy. Sure he made a few blunders but you cannot fault his three "e"s... energy, effort & excitement. Future star.

You guys have said it all already about everyone else.

Let's just hope we can start clicking a bit earlier in games from now on.

I'd love to see the clearance stats from that last quarter. We absolutely monstered them there then. And the amount of loose players in front, and to the side, of the stoppages streaming forward was the reason we won.

+ves:

- Showed the talent the team has got, to win without really clicking as a team
- Brennan, Johnstone & Rischitelli - three much-maligned players who showed they can be depended upon
- Rich was credited with a hitout! Arms above head, must've been the shortest player on the field.
- Forward structure looks to be functioning pretty well already.
- Power: one of the best 20-possession games you'll ever see.
- Banfield: reminds me of one "Fly" McRae

-ves:

- little cohesion, understandable given the influx of new talent. Will take a few weeks to really get going I think.
- awareness: it always seems that we sell our teammates into trouble (although admittedly I remember the same thing in previous years - NAB Cup and intra-club match simulation cannot give the same intensity as a H&A game.
- dewy ball: I'd love to see one night training session in the week leading up to a night game to get us into that mindset. Either that or put vaso or oil on the ball like one of my junior coaches used to.
- Patfull as a tagger: Early days I know, but I'm going on the record as saying I don't like it. I can see it on tall running player who have the tendency to drift forward.Would prefer to see him go back and release Drummond further up the ground. I realise it may be a team balance thing, as you'd have to bring in a Stiller or Selwood, but I reckon he plays his best footy when the ball is coming towards him.
- clearances: it still looked like we were standing around at times watching West Coast go in and win it. The boys need to believe the ball is theirs.
- KICK-INS!!!!! ARRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!

Haven't read the other comments about the game yet but here are some of my views. I'll go back and see what others thought.

Fantastic way to start the season at the Gabba, enjoyable atmosphere and it was encouraging to see them trying to get the crowd to give up the "Brisbane clap, clap, clap" chant (even if the practice "LIIIOOONS" chants were utterly cringe-worthy).

We are a 5 goal better team than the Eagles but it shouldn't have taken until the final term to prove it. Some terrible disposal errors in the first half could probably be put down to rust.

Matt Maguire is a yard too slow. He will get slaughtered on the fast leading forwards. He needs to play on the stay-at-home monsters or unfortunately I can't see a role for him.

Clark was looking very ginger before the game and we in the stands certainly noticed it at the warm up. Stomach bug? Cramp? Not sure, but it definitely restricted his output.

Rischitelli and Brennan had blinders. Brennan is rapidly stepping into the sub-elite player goup in the competition. And good on Rischa proving many of us wrong. Here's hoping he takes that next step we have all been waiting for. Black certainly showed signs of a reduced pre-season, but also showed signs of the absolute champ he is. Still one of the cleanest in traffic.

Rich has started back where he left off. Can't believe the composure he has for a 19 year old. There is no other player in the team I want to see with football in hand over him. His ability in traffic to spot a player running by and fire off a handball is amazing.

Banfield did some nice things I thought. Definite keeper next week. Obvious first game nerves at times, and you can't blame him for some mistakes.

Keep Power up forward. Good to see the champ slot a few home like the good old days!! Got us back in it. :thumbsu:

Fev should have kicked 8. I hope he puts them away next week - we need to take our opportunities when we get them. That soccer goal was right in front of us and made us forget about a certain FF for a fraction of a second.

Andrew Raines made some absolute howlers in the first quarter but improved as the game went on. If Johnstone plays back next week, I think we should bring Polkinghorne or Rockliff in for Raines.

Travis Johnstone. :thumbsu: Top game. Gave up a few hospital hand passes, but looked much cleaner than those around him. One of my favourite players but even I was impressed with his steadying influence down back (not often you can say that). His beard and hair are coming along nicely.

Again a great effort by the boys

Anyone who is bagging Banfield knows nothing about footy, the kid worked his arse off, you just don't find space you have to work blood hard to create it, he found plenty of it- exceptional work rate. Banfield also knows how to get to the fall ball-reads the play well- disposing of the ball at full speed under fatigue is something he will get better at, it is what makes the great players so great!!

Defensive run through the midfield along with the ability to get numbers to the clearance are probably our biggest issues.

Defensive run is a weakness due to a lack of leg speed through the middle of the field.

The numbers to the clearance is an interesting problem, i guess in some ways players either work to the clearance situation naturally and others tend to hang off the edge of the clearance area. We need more in and under, Proud and the Lobster are the obvious candidates.

The Berger's definitely going to be able to spend 50 percent of time in the ruck, planning for the future it might allow Clark to play CHB at times to give Maguire some rest time on the bench- managing the likes of Maguire and Raines time on the field is important early on due to the amount of footy they have missed in recent years.

Personally i think Staker is a better option down back rather than up forward, Polkinghorne will love the new set forward line set up.

The short turn around will hurt us, we will need to jump Carlton early!

- Rich was credited with a hitout! Arms above head, must've been the shortest player on the field.
And spoiled 2-3 certain opposition marks at crucial stages in defence. Love this kid.

- awareness: it always seems that we sell our teammates into trouble (although admittedly I remember the same thing in previous years - NAB Cup and intra-club match simulation cannot give the same intensity as a H&A game.
Sherman still the worst perpetrator of this. If he eliminates this, and handballing to himself he will be a much better player. Still continues to give an option in the middle though. Sherman has got a few faults but they are all fairly correctable - never hand ball to a player in a worst position (back yourself when in congestion), don't handball it to yourself or run into a dead end when you have plenty of space to move in, and for goodness sake, move the ball on a little quicker when marking on a HBF.

Yeah not a fan. He needs to play on the leading forwards down back. Maguire looks too slow to keep up with them.

- clearances: it still looked like we were standing around at times watching West Coast go in and win it. The boys need to believe the ball is theirs.
Lost count at the end of the night the number of times we spotted our mids standing behind their opposition at the clearances!!! How do you expect to win the ball that way? It makes no difference who wins the hit out if you do that.

TFB,

Thoughts on Rich doing our kick outs?

He seemed to get some tagging attention last night and will continue to get this throughout the season. Kick outs and some time across half back will alleviate this- oh and it helps he is one of the best kicks in the comp and a very good decision maker

Looks like Fev got off to a good start for you boys

His kicking seems a bit off, but he provided a great target and worked well with Brown. His defensive pressure was good and has been good for a couple of years.

Just on his kicking, seems Glass pushed him wide, then again it also depends on where the ball was being kicked from. In the last couple of years, his accuracy hasn't been what it once was (yes, he's kicked more goals than ever before in the last 2 years, but the ball was actually on the carlton forward line for the first time in nearly a decade). He still kicks bag of 7 or 8 goals with only 1 or 2 behinds, but he's also been kicking a much larger of behinds proportionally to goals than ever before. Hence the 3.7 last night. I reckon his confidence on kicking isn't what it was from 2004/2005 to 2007, maybe he'll get it back

They'll be times when his kicking frustrates, but they'll be times when he leaves your jaw dropping ... But at day's end he can be a match winner

Very rusty but this is to be expected for a first up with very limited preparation. Disposal skills, especially handball, need some work.

Luke Power played well but to my eye looks to be limited, especially in pace, by his groin complaint.

Best game ever for us by Brennan- kept us in the game for the first 3, and his goal in the final set us up for a win. BOG by a street. Noticed the WC were trying to insert a body between him and the bounce at one stage- evidence of his 3rd man up ability. WC have a future star in Natanui but we've got the real deal NOW.

Brown is an out and out champion and we are privileged to be able to file him away in our memory bank along, in my case, with Baldock, Stewart, Hudson, Blight etc- those 2 long distance goals in the final were the mark of a true champ.

Banfield, Raines and Staker [especially when he went back] improved as the game went on. Maguire to a lesser extent. Banfield was a bit transfixed by the pace of the game, but he'll improve and Voss will give him the chance to improve. Raines recovered from a series of clangers. Rischa very solid.

Our rucks negated probably the 2 best in the business. And was it 8 goals between our 2 key forwards? It can only get better.

Black out-endured his team of taggers- what happened to the edict about policing off the ball interference?

All in all, a very good first up. We're a mile in front of the Eagles in class, and they're not a bad side.

Acuguy,

Yeah, I'm all for it. I think Drummond is still the best option. Rich, McGrath, Patfull or even Johnstone are valid options. I don't like Adcock doing it - while he's a safe kick, he's probably not quite create or deceptive enough for the role.

My angst at kick-ins is more our defence when the opposition is kicking in. We are surely still the worst at it in the league. Mind you West Coast had a very obvious plan to break down the zone that we hadn't anticipated. But our blokes don't seem to react to the opposition loading one side of the field. There almost needs to be a "general" standing in the centre square directing if players need to shuffle across. We seem to have a very static zone that doesn't adjust itself.
