80,000 people are expected to greet Collingwood and Melbourne at the MCG for what should be a thrilling game. Both sides come into the game in great form, and for the first time in over 10 years, both sides are playing each other in the top eight. In 2017, Collingwood and Melbourne played each other twice, with both games turning out to be thrilling contests. Many pundits predict this will be just as exciting.

Collingwood

While Collingwood has not beaten the highest quality opposition, they still manage to put away lesser sides, and this was well and truly the case against the Dockers last week. The Magpies put on a wire to wire performance against Fremantle, with a number of standout performers putting on an excellent show. The usual suspects in Grundy and Sidebottom played well, while Hoskin-Elliott was sensational with kicking six goals in his best performance as a Magpie. The debutant in Mihocek was also a surprise packet for Collingwood fans, kicking four goals in a fine debut. The quality of opposition takes a serious step up this week, with Collingwood coming up against Melbourne. Collingwood have struggled against Melbourne in recent years, losing to the Demons in four of the past five occasions. However, they will be buoyed with the addition of Jeremy Howe to the team.

The man to watch for Collingwood is Levi Greenwood. After coming back from injury, Greenwood has been somewhat subpar, with midfielder trying to find his place in the team. His quiet form has led to some supporters calling him to return to the VFL to regain some form. A solid game against the Demons is needed to quiet down the doubters, and assist in building as the Magpies go deeper into the season.

Melbourne

After having their hearts broken in the final minutes of the home and away season, Melbourne have responded mightily, putting themselves in a prime position to make finals for the first time since 2006. Despite a somewhat slow start, the Demons have built into some of the best form in the league, winning their past six games. The Demons have been led by stars in Oliver, Gawn, and Hogan who have all matured into some of the competitions finest leaders. This Melbourne team is going from strength to strength, and if they want to push for top four, they will need to beat teams like Collingwood. They have the tools to do this, with a high scoring forward line, and a brilliant ruckman.

The man to watch for the Demons is Angus Brayshaw. A few years ago, Brayshaw put on a rising star nominee performance against Collingwood on Queen’s Birthday, but has somewhat stagnated since then. This has been due to a number of factors, such as concussion, but the young future star has strung together some brilliant performances in the past two weeks, and will be looking to continue on with that form against Collingwood.

Matchup to watch

In what is one of the most anticipated matchups of the season, Brodie Grundy and Max Gawn will clash in what should be an epic ruck battle. These two footballers are currently fighting for the All-Australian ruck spot, with both ruckman putting in good shifts week in week out. The two are highly versatile and mobile as well. Grundy and Gawn are both rated highly by their respective BigFooty boards, with both players leading their respective MVP awards. This sets up for a juicy match up that should help determine who is the best ruckman in the league.

Tip

Melbourne are the better team here. In perhaps each area, the Demons are quite simply the better team, they should easily handle the Magpies and move on to better teams.

Melbourne by 24.

Melbourne the better team? In every area? Their forward line is the only area where they are ahead of us in.

We are better than last season and we should have been 2-0 v Melbourne.

If we lose tomorrow I will be very disappointed. Both sides are yet to beat a top 8 side and both have had terrible losses to sides outside the 8 (Hawthorn). Neither two sides are really premiership material this season but to see Melbourne third favourites for the flag and so short for this games is stunning.

This is huge in context of our season, a win today entrenches us in the 8 at the bye which would be a fantastic result.
Really hoping the team turn up to play to announce themselves to the football world that collingwood is back in town!!

The fridge is stacked and ready for a cracking afternoon.

Be sure to clean the heads in your VCR if you're gonna tape the game cob..

I'm nervous. Also, got a vasectomy on Friday so I'm not going to be able to jump off the couch when we kick goals!

Only thing in your jocks is a sprog.. not a frog.. ya mad flog.. haha yeah na just dunking me scotch finger in ya cuppa cob.. settle ya kettle.

I've said this a few times now but I really think this one is going be a lot more competitive than many people think.
Melbourne's form has come off beating bottom 8 sides. Though them beating Norf and Adelaide were impressive (Adelaide not so much), they've lost to the same teams we have, sometimes by worse.

Backline. Backline. Backline. That's the key to today's game. We can kick goals, it's just about stopping them from kicking more to squash all our hard work.

One thing I like about the 2018 Pies is we have won the games we are meant to win.
V Hawks lost badly but not exactly a shock
V GWS in melb lost close but both teams were below their best due to injuries
V Carlton comfortable win as we should
V Adelaide away big win. Our one upset so far. Although this can be tempered by looking at their 2018 form being 6-6.
V Bombers a big win on Anzac Day. The bombers weren’t travelling well and we did what we should have done and crunched them.
V Tigers good for most then poleaxed. Not a shock though.
V Lions away close win. Poor defensively but again, won when we should have.
V Geelong never far out of it but didn’t look like winning. Inaccuracy didn’t help. Not a diabolical loss though.
V Saints who we struggle with lately a comfortable win but one we should take given they are 1 win
V Bulldogs we normally are competitive but a very comfy win this time around. I imagine we started favourites and deservedly got the chocolates.
V Freo in melb a very nice win. Didn’t like the last quarter fade as it can be a precursor for our start to the next game. But a very good win overall.

I think we’d have been favourites in all our wins bar Adelaide and not favourites in all of our losses. This time we are underdogs again so we need to pull another Adelaide out of our hats for our second ‘upset’ of the season.

We will win this.

I think we have a better midfield.

That said our midfield hasnt truly clicked yet, mostly because one of them has always been a bit down on form or fitness. But after Adams having a cracker last week after an indifferent year to date, it seems they are all looking in peak form. Looking forward to the day they all click on the same day, that day being today. Pendlebury, Sidebottom, Adams, Treloar, De Goey and Phillips might be the difference, with assistance from Mayne Thomas Maynard Greenwood and hopefully Daicos.
