I presume Snelling is somewhat dependent on Gresham?

Gresham > Snelling
Goldstein > Phillips
Mackay > Zerk-Thatcher
Boak > Heppell

Well I suppose we would be improving the list?!
Heppell has signed for a year. Don’t get the obsession with Boak he’s more past it than Heppell. Hire him as a coach if need his experience so bad.

Can someone explain to me the rationale with cutting Stewart early with a year to run on his contract?

Futures of BZT, Baldwin and McKay unknown.
Reid's a long way off proving his fitness, let alone form.
If we really didn't want him, could we have shopped him around for 4th rounder?

What was the harm with waiting until after trade week before letting him go? Can get picked up SSP, so not like we needed to give him time to find another club.
He’s constantly injured, not much point in keeping him as depth if he’s broken every time we need to call upon him.

On the Chol and Weideman argument. I’d say the better player is who ever is on a shorter contract and will be off our list quicker.
Think they both have 2 to run plus one we have already spent the draft capital on.

Chol’s best output in a season is 44 goals, Weideman has never kicked 20 in a season despite having one of the great midfields ramming it down his throat.

Given Chol is shaping as a salary dump, he could actually help us get something out of the suns and be far, far more impactful on the field than Weid could ever be.

And outside of that he has 34 goals in 39 games, had double figure goals tally once, most of which were in a side that won 3 flags in 4 years.

He's shit. Take the very extreme outlier out of the equation and look at the rest.

Never said he wasn’t shit, but we actually had to give up something to get Weideman into the club (mistake, even at the time) when if we waited a year we could well have been in a position to be given something to take Chol off GC’s hands and Chol has more runs on the board.

It’s looking like Weideman being around is going to come at the expense of Voss as well so that’s nothing short of an unmitigated disaster 12 months on.

Depth isnt the issue with our tall defenders

Reid
N.Cox
Laverde
Ridley
Baldwin
Weideman
L.Hayes

Are all tall defenders

If you have that many injuries that yojr deciding between Stewart and L.Hayes as a 3rd tall defender than your in a position where you should be picking Hayes anyway

We have up Francis and 42 for Weideman, 54 and 72. Which we then turned into virtually Alwyn and Jayden Davey.

Also if Voss gets cut it's probably because after the first two rounds this year he averaged 1 goal/game and is a one trick pony. Not because Weideman (who probably plays back next year anyway) is on the list.

The more you think about it, the club accepted the rebuild premise, drafted 3 tall defenders in a row - but it would seem they now arnt prepared to stay that course. Perhaps our lying ladder position has fast tracked where we want to be? The likes of Reid and Hayes and cox to an extent were never going to be plug and play.

I'd have to say though, not many come back from the stunted development years Reid has endured

Whos saying they arent prepared to stay the course?

Sniffing around every clubs garbage bin looking for fa or any unhappy player looking for a new home might suggest a path different from a traditional rebuild
That’s just smart list management. If it works say 1 in 10 times and you get 2 players a year that means you’ve likely found 3-4 of your best 22 this way.

See players like Lipinski on Collingwood, Hunter on the Dees, Allir on Port, most of the top teams have a few undervalued cast offs in their best 22

The Aliir trade will go down as one of the best trades of all time IMO

If targeted it works fine, if you are just grabbing whoever says yes, it becomes poor strategy. The Gresham one for example doseht exact scream need, it probably ends up stifling the kids on your build and ruining their pathway development. If the coaches had faith in reid, Hayes and cox they aren't looking at McKay are they? You've just invested 3 high end picks on the role

Sunk cost falacy is a thing, so it’s tricky. Depends on what position the coaches see those players playing.

The right vets aid the development of young players as they provide structure and experience

None of Reid/Cox/Hayes are a physically developed KPD1 so I’d say McKay fills a different role.

Having competition for spots and raised training standards is also good for developing players

Anyone got the subscriber only article to the Herald Sun regarding McKay now having Essendon as favourites.
