Sunk cost falacy is a thing, so it’s tricky. Depends on what position the coaches see those players playing.

The right vets aid the development of young players as they provide structure and experience

None of Reid/Cox/Hayes are a physically developed KPD1 so I’d say McKay fills a different role.

Having competition for spots and raised training standards is also good for developing players

Thats the key isn't it, bringing in guys to raise standards, or are strong enough in character not to getting sucked into our team culture but rather try to raise it

would have loved Bedford. And Hill for that matter. Those two would have been worth using the war chest for.
Those are the types of modern small forwards we desperately need. I hope not but we likely end up with guys not quite suited to the modern game - they don't quite have the athletic profile required for the role, and come with kicking and competitive issues. And then the hierarchy find themselves in this situation in 5 years bewildered how it has all happened.

Totally agree

Sort of: culture is set by leadership. So Watson, Heppell, Merrett, Hird, Scott, Rutten ect

For Essendon they will be looking for players that reinforce good habits rather then encourage bad ones. It also means that when they have injuries they have enough AFL standard players that can cover an expected amount of injuries.

For other clubs it really depends. For instance a team like Sydney that has good depth and culture can prioritise finding talented players with high potential who get in their own way.

Having too little depth and too much depth can both cause issues. GWS has had the latter problem the past few years and actually improved by getting rid of Taranto and Hopper

So it’s really a horses for courses thing base on needs/availability

Not just habits, but competitive mindsets.
Need the players who aren't just here for a pay cheque (i dont criticise btw, i do the same).

See I think at some point it’s just a job. Everyone is there for the money.

It’s just some players take pride in their work and are professional others aren’t. It’s the same at every job really.

Thing is if you want to be an average footy player go play state league. The afl is an elite comp with only 800 jobs. The standard required to be average is just a lot higher

Anyone got the subscriber only article to the Herald Sun regarding McKay now having Essendon as favourites.
From yesterday?

NEW FAVOURITE FOR MCKAY?

Sydney might be the strong favourites to secure Brodie Grundy but Essendon has emerged as a leading contender for Dons free agent Ben McKay.

Sydney had pushed strongly and lodged a compelling financial offer but Essendon has now made clear its interest and according to industry sources is the favourite for his services.

Hawthorn is the third option, with McKay now having three strong deals that would all trigger first-round compensation for North Melbourne, which would secure them pick three in the draft.

What is not known is whether they are three or five-year deals.

A three-year deal worth over $750,000 would likely be enough for first-round compensation.

But given the competition the clubs might have to offer longer than three seasons.

It is a remarkable statement about the power of free agents and key defenders given McKay was in extremely modest form early in the year coming off a bone stress fracture.

Now he has his pick of three clubs and could yet secure a long-term deal worth up to $4 million.

As Arsene Wenger always said, I don't like January signings, moving mid season tells me everything I need to know about a players motivations...

Can the same be said for players moving fa in the AFL?

We have up Francis and 42 for Weideman, 54 and 72. Which we then turned into virtually Alwyn and Jayden Davey.

Also if Voss gets cut it's probably because after the first two rounds this year he averaged 1 goal/game and is a one trick pony. Not because Weideman (who probably plays back next year anyway) is on the list.

We had a pick infront of the two Davey bids and elected to use that list spot on Weideman, we could have taken it to the draft.

A list spot designated to a key position player has been promised to Weideman for next year, him not being on the list would allow us to pretty easily keep Voss without creating an imbalance. Given Voss is looking like teetering right on the edge, Weideman not being there tips it the other way.

This is the EFC fallacy - we never do this...

A good use of our remaining cap would be to bring in a standards setter.

Give cotchin, boak or hurn some coin to come be an onfield coach for half the season. Be around for a pre-season to set standards on how to win.
cotchin's committed to doing some pr shit with some basketball club in melbourne, as per the news last night

I wouldn’t expect so. Free Agency is the norm in many other sports. No so in the AFL.

The AFL doesn’t have a midseason trade window/opportunity so there’s no avenue for players to try and change their situation in the middle of the season

Anybody with integrity would not have accepted that Brownlow - so a no thanks to Cotchin anyway.

Would have thought Cotchin and Essendon pairing up would be pretty natural given Cotchin commenced finishing Shiel's career and we have finished the job.

we are morons.

We probably are for many reasons, but we have to go for McKay given we literally have no proven KPDs. If Reid hadnt had injury issues, maybe he would be ready. But he did and he's not. In the absence of literally anyone else that could stand genuine KPFs, we have no choice here. And we can afford it. Take comfort that Sydney want him too (they tend to know what they're doing).

Essendun Have McKay In Their (Bomb)Sights

Essendun have emerged as front runners for want-away big man, Benny "Better Brother" McKay after putting forward a compelling offer to him and his manager this week, believed to be 5 years at $800K per season. Essendun list building wunderkind, Adrian "Jackets" Dudoro, was particularly smug about the impending signature of BBB. "Benny is the missing piece of the puzzle for our 17th, slotting in nicely at fullback. It's no secret that premierships are built around a strong spine surrounded by talented midget flankers - Sheeds taught me that back in the 90's."

There's been some surprise at the scale of Essendun's offer to BBB, however, "Jackets" Dudoro put that to rest, "Whilst Benny will be the highest paid player at the club, he'll earn his keep. With the amount of hack kicks from the D50, one-way running through the midfield and turnovers into the forward 50 from his teammates, Benny will see plenty of the ball heading lace out to his opponent. We're really hopeful he'll be a hybird Essendun era Mal Michael/James Gwilt."

After touring the facilities at The Hangar, BBB said, "I was really impressed with the facilities here, the spongy floors are for real and the pastry buffet for morning tea was second to none. The selection really was insane; danish's, donuts, almond croissants.....so much to choose from! At Norf we only get Wagon Wheels cut into quarters with 43 blend from the birko." "Jackets" Dudoro commented during the tour, "Showing prospective recruits around The Hangar just highlights to them the storied history of the club and the legends that have come before....Zantuck, Reimers, Green, and so many more."

This reporter believes that in addition to the financial offer and the Essendun history and culture, a strong pull for BBB to sign on with Essendun is the professori himself, "Jackets" Dudoro. "Jackets is like a father figure to me, so it makes the decision to sign on at Essendun so much easier."
