I haven't been able to watch a lot of today, but what I have seen, it does seem that Sydney have received a few free kicks in front of goal where we haven't been as "lucky" with similar situations at the other end

Yeah, I missed the first 3 quarters but in the last, every Swans F50 entry seemed to come with a free kick. There was a bit of panic from the Cats defenders, but possibly a little over-generous from the umps at one end.

Bit scrappy but never really in doubt or challenged, some times you just need to grind it out and they did despite the Swans clearly getting the better whistle. Still a couple of bigger guns to come back in and the ball movement is much improved on last year so really good start to launch the season from this opening fortnight

I only tuned back in halfway though the last

There was a free kick against Claudia for a slight grab but that came after Lochland seemed to give her a slight push in the marking contest

Calls just maybe a little more generous for one team

Observations from the game:
  • forward line was clinical. The way the forwards worked together to create space was really impressive and said to me that they have all bought it to what the team is trying to do. A lot of selfless movement. Really impressive
  • ball use was on another level to the Swans. Especially by foot
  • it was warm in the sun, we were always going to struggle to keep the intensity up for 4 qtrs
  • if we had a quality ruck like the swans we would be flag favourites
  • umpiring was poor. Like really bad. So inconsistent and one sided
  • the Swans were allowed to maul prez at stoppages which nullified her impact after qtr time. However they were burned a number of times when our other mids (often Nina and Amy mcd) were able to waltz away from stoppages because they were so prez focussed. A really selfless game from prez
  • our defence looked a little unbalanced at times when Claudia g or Meg were off the ground. When they were both on the ground we looked solid as a rock
  • all in all a very professional performance, on to next week

Their style of play made it easier for the umps too. Basically clogged up our F50 and "Richmond-ed" the ball into theirs.

And yeah, that was a soft one.

I worry about the fact that so many of our KPP are 30 or over (hope their bodies hold together for the year) but if the talls stay fit, we now have the midfield depth to play scheer 100 % fwd and she can fair dinkum win us a flag if the supply is right.

Ruck is a concern for me. Hoare has been well beaten in the first 2 games. They might give her a shot at Emma King next week who has always smashed us, but it might be time to give Fuller a crack at it soon.

Johnson, Scott & Webster should come back in over the next few weeks probably at the expense of Kearns, Bragg & maybe Garing. That’s a team that could bat deep into finals IMO.

Solid road win against an improving Sydney side.

With Chloe Molloy, Ally Morphett, Lucy McEvoy, Brooke Lachland and Aliesha Newman they have plenty of experience and talent to work with. I thought ex-Cat Laura Gardiner was solid for Sydney; I always had a bit of time for her as a player and she looks to have taken a step forward this year.

We hit the scoreboard early with decisive, clean play in the 1st quarter that favored our switched-on key forwards Jackie Parry and Chloe Scheer.

Sydney tightened up on Georgie Prespakis, who started the game in dazzling touch, but the Cats had sufficient midfield coverage to keep the Swans at arm's length for the duration of the game.

Nina Morrison, Amy McDonald and Darcy Moloney all played well - it sounds as though Becky Webster might still be a couple of weeks away; she will be a handy in when she returns as she adds more depth of talent to our midfield unit.

No Bel Johnson down back this afternoon but Abbey McDonald and the returning Rachel Kearns were sound fill-ins.

Aishling Moloney was pretty quiet for three quarters before sparking to life in the last quarter when she confirmed her enticing attributes; slippery as an eel with a tight turning circle.

Best players:

Nina Morrison - a 4-quarter effort from Nina today full of grit, grunt and tidy skill
Chloe Scheer - another high impact game from Scheer; everything she did looked dangerous
Jackie Parry - sensational start to the season. Parry was solid enough in 2022 but looks to have grown in confidence this year.
Amy McDonald - typically industrious game from McDonald
Georgie Prespakis - Sydney locked down on Prespakis after quarter time but her 1st quarter was hugely influential, and she still had a game-high dozen tackles.

Watched the replay last night. Pretty impressive effort against a team who has clearly improved a lot from last season, but bringing in the likes of Chloe Molloy, Lucy McEvoy and Laura Gardiner will do that. Their ruck was in beast mode at times too with her mobility and strength. Not many rucks in the league would have beaten her yesterday.

Was a good even spread of workload on our end considering we won the clearances and contested ball without Prespakis being a factor since quarter time. Parry and Scheer were the main beneficaries of the work further up the ground, but Aishling Moloney worked into the game well late. If she cleans up her kicking at goal, I can see her tearing a game to shreds later in the season with her height and mobility.

Surman is a real talent with ball in hand.

Good footy brain and skills.

Quality addition to our side.

Like it.

Go Catters

Great break-down.

Couple of points reading this sparked...

I'd rate our midfield group amongst any in the comp now. I don't watch many of the other games but it's awesome to see Georgie get shut down and still win the midfield battle. Great to see Moloney (of the Darcy kind) now running through the middle - as great as she is in the F50, she's valuable in the middle too. A bit like Chloe - you'd love to have two of each.

On that note, how do you fit Webster back in? Thought she started well last year but tailed off. Hopefully she can recapture her early season form.

I thought Parry was "just OK" last year and was overshadowed by Scott's stellar season. With Shelly out of action, Parry's stepped up big time. 6 goals in the first two games has basically given us a focal point which Scheer, Surman etc. can work around.

Parry has been an unexpected (for me) bonus this year so far PzB - but in another way it makes sense; she's 27, has 34 games experience (veteran Kate Darby has played 33 games for comparison) and she's looking fit and strong - Parry's probably smart enough to realise that if she's going to leave her mark then it has to start this year. She's been great.

I agree with your thoughts on Webster; she had a really flat end to last year including playing one of her worst games in the finals, but she's still only young despite being very experienced.
I'd back her in to bounce back well.
Webster's been one who has played a lot over the past few seasons; was doing back-to-back AFLW and VFLW seasons there for a few years and over her time at the club her body shape has changed and she is now a finely tuned athlete.
Just needs to re-discover her form and touch and she'll be a huge asset to the team once again - and although the team covered really well for Georgie P yesterday, it would still be nice to have that extra class and depth in the midfield.

When we get Shelley Scott back we'll have a really strong forward line; the addition of Surman and Aishling Moloney, gives us a nice mix of players capable of winning 1v1 contests in the F50.

I'd take out Garing, Moloney more time forward and Beccy goes into the middle

I'm not sure how they squeeze Scott in tbh but someone has to come out... Johnson will come back for Kearns I'd say

Bragg comes out for Scott. She can play back or forward.

Albeit from a limited sample, she was way better forward than back last season. Pretty much our focal point for a good part of it. But the flexibility is pretty handy. If she even gets back to 70-80% of what she did last season, she makes a good team even better.

That's a good point... I'd completely forgotten or hadn't realised that Bragg was even in the side haha

I was a bit the same until very late in yesterday's game; looked as though Gunjaca was having a few problems, noticed Bragg on the ground at FB late in the last quarter. Not sure she would have contested anything on the day though ..
