I'd see myself agreeing with the grading (5/10), but not the overall sense of optimism in this piece. With other teams clearly continuing to improve as well, we're not likely to be shooting the lights out with even a reasonable trajectory of development going into next year.

Fact is, we still only won two games for the season. One at home in the closing moments, against an interstate team that entered the comp after us and finished the season 1-9 with a percentage of 43%. And one against a fellow battler, that also entered the comp after us. We didn't even play the top two teams of this season, and also dodged the team that finished fifth on the ladder as well.

It's why I'm ready to see serious change to the playing list for next season, notwithstanding that this time of further expansion to the comp makes it a terrible time to be reshaping it all. In the end, we are nowhere near even being a middling team at this point, and I can't see the point in avoiding the pain that is now inevitably required to rebuild a fairly mediocre list. I think the missteps of our early list list management decisions are now burning us massively and it's time for drastic action.

Keep some experienced heads? Sure. Prioritise just about every young player over selecting 'placeholders' who won't ever realistically be part of a successful team in the years to come? Absolutely. And with the pace of development in the game right now (where recent draftees seem so much more equipped to play the game than plenty of those who first made their way onto lists in the early seasons), I think relying heavily on the draft is truly the best way for us to build a team that has some hope of being competitive for the years ahead.

I think the two pieces of the puzzle we need to fix at the moment is a decent ruck to be able to feed our emerging on-ball division and another key defender so we can free Maddy McMahon up to play more of a sweeper role like Tom Stewart does at AFL level.

Agree they would be important additions. But we're about to be short of an experienced tall to lead the forward line as well, and our on-ball division's best contributor is seriously limited in her disposal effectiveness. I don't see Prespakis hanging around for the long term either and, Nina aside, the rest of the mids group is 'developing' at best.

Still see us massively struggling against the slicker midfields in the coming season/s, even with the potential changes you've noted.

No All Aussie team for Amy McDonald...

McDonald was never a chance for AA.
I'm a fan of Amy, for sure. But there are just too many really talented mids in the system for her to make the final AA team. She does a fantastic job for the Cats. considering the somewhat limited skillset she brings to the game. But she's not going to get picked ahead of players who are more rounded overall and have higher proficiency in some of the basic skills of the game. Amy's clearance game is elite; her distribution after winning it is far less imposing. So I actually think she's done brilliantly well to make the squad, and don't think it's surprising at all that she didn't make the team.

Totally agree with everything you've said - great contributor & player for the club, definitely a valuable asset to the midfield, but I think she'd struggle to break into a number of the better/stronger teams because of her disposal & her kicking can be a real weakness at times

I'm glad she was recognised with selection in the AA squad, but to see her going further would have been a real surprise

Meanwhile, McMahon looked a look earlier in the season, but thinking how our season panned out worked against her in the end. I expect her to be right up there at our B&F though, and wouldn't be surprised if she won

Agree with all of that. And, like you, I'd love to see Maddy win the B&F. Had a brilliant season, incredibly consistent, and don't think she was clearly beaten by a single opponent throughout the year.

Our 2022 would have been far uglier on the scoreboard without her out there every week.

Interesting choice for us, but I like it
