Alastair Clarkson: How long?

Forget results this year. It'll be a legit premiership but it'll be won for a different style of game, one where endurance is less important than in the past. Bit like running a stayer in a sprint race.
So it’s not actually football *

I'm actually a fan of angry Clarko taking no prisoners.

Yeah it's hypocritical but keep calling out the rules, the floppers and other teams that aren't that good. Way more interesting than any other discussions around the game.

As for what the heck he's doing with his own team - I have no idea. Doesn't seem to be noticeable changes or even attempts to change the personnel and ball movement.

Back to the question, unless he walks for some reason he'll be there until the end of 2021 at an absolute minimum. And my guess is that he'll be there in 2023 unless he loses interest.

The list is trash at the moment but in AFL you don't sack blokes with his resume. What Hawthorn need is Chris Fagan mk2, they've lost their way since his departure.

As long as he likes. He out sees chairman’s and board types.

The Papley comments screamed a man that is frustrated with losses, and right now he's got no answers.

Hes either stubborn or naive. Either he doesn't want to do the necessary rebuild required, or he doesn't think the Hawks need it. Either one is not good for the Hawks.

Suffers badly from “ small man syndrome “.

Give credit where credit is due, might be something Clarko should embrace.

At least this year and the end of next year, especially given the circumstances we all find ourselves in. He's been a terrific coach at Hawthorn for a long time and should be given some leniency.
Leniency for what? And by who.? This leniency word is just silly.

Another head scratcher for me when Malthouse was at carlton was he sent Andrew Walker from the forward line who lead the blue goal kicking in 2011 with 56 goals to move him to the backline.
Almost like he was trolling

In the last few seasons Clarko and co:

- traded pick 10 and two first round picks for a guy that had a horrific knee injury in Omera. He will never be anything more than a b grade midfielder.

- traded a first round pick and Ryan burton one of our only decent players under 23 for a high half forward in Wingard- yes, he’s a gun, but he’s not a player we needed for where our list was at.

- bought in and paid Tyrone Vickery on good money

- traded pick 19 for Jon O’Rourke

- traded Bradley hill for pick 23

- made ben Stratton captain

I love Clarko. He’s a legend of the AFL but unfortunately he’s cooked. He isn’t taking this team to another flag. His comments in losses this season have been so delusional... for the first time since his early days, he’s being completely out coached as well. I can see him coaching next season and finishing up a season early before his contract ends with Sammy Mitchell taking over.

He will end up coaching GWS on huge $$$.
I get that but up until 4 weeks ago many still had the Hawks as premiership contenders

Jack Steven Lachie Henderson Gary Ablett Gary Rohan Josh Jenkins Zach Tuhoy Aaron Black

Henderson is really the only one of them we gave anything significant up for. It is not really comparable with what Hawthorn have done.

I posted this on the Geelong board last week:

Both clubs are going to struggle moving forward and it will just depend who drafts and develops best from here.

Hawthorn's problem is that they have traded out of multiple drafts whereas we only completely neglected the 2015 one where we picked up Dangerfield & co.

Hawks first pick in 2016 was at #74. Before Hawthorn had a pick we selected Parfitt, Stewart, Ratugolea & Narkle.

Hawks first pick in 2017 was at #45. Before Hawthorn had a pick we selected Fogarty, Kelly, Constable.

Hawks first pick in 2018 was #52. Before Hawthorn had a pick we selected Clark, Kreuger (effectively), Jarvis & Kennerley.

Last year Hawthorn took Day in the first round who looks pretty good. We took Stephens and De Koning who are yet to be sighted.

This year Hawthorn will have one first rounder, we will have three courtesy of the Kelly trade.

Sure the draft is speculative and the reality is that at least half of those won't make it but we have some tickets in the raffle at least once Ablett, Taylor & co move on at the end of the year and open up some spots in the team to give them a run. Can't say the same for Hawthorn who have a massive void coming up in behind their current team.

He Probably was. Still scratch my head to this day because of it.

It is almost as Stupid if Ross Lyon throws Hayden Ballantyne who is only 170cm in the ruck after a career best season of kicking 49 goals in 2014 as a forward pocket.

Clarko has been a very good coach, you don't win a flag without your coach being good. With all due respect to them, GWS are proof you can have the most talented list in the world but if the coach freezes in the big moments you don't get the flag.

Clarko's problem however is one we've seen before, without good players you can't win a flag. Clarko, like many multi premiership winning coaches before him, get used to being on top and start drinking their own bath water. They also get used to being able to call on experienced heads when times get tough, that the draft feels almost foreign.

They know how long the draft path takes and their ego just won't let them reset. They are to used to being the team to beat, they simply refuse to drop gracefully.

Maybe Clarko will end up bucking the trend, I strongly suspect he won't though.

Guys like Sicily and Toby Greene are grubs and straight up cancers. You can't tolerate their behaviour as leaders without hurting the culture of a club.

Be a prick to teammates and hold them to high standards all you want, but Sicily just throws tantrums and cheap shots it's beyond pathetic at this point. His behaviour should have been brought into line at the u15's level. People are confusing lack of control with passion. It's just selfishness.

As long as a grub like Sicily is considered a leader around the club they'll go nowhere.

One of the worst posts I have ever read on this forum (and I have seen plenty of doozies)

Be interesting if Clarkson looks again to trade away Hawthorns draft picks for mature players at seasons end

Would there be someone strong enough at hawthorn to overrule?
You really want Clarkson gone don't you? LoL. You and other 🐈 fans were happy Ross Lyon was gone. LoL

Yeah nah didnt get the result we wanted but we're going to focus on next week and hopefully we get the 4 points.

It's hard to alter gameplans in 2 weeks, We play a pretty hard structure and we're falling down in certain areas, (Especially ball delivery inside 50) where its Chad Wingard but nothing else is really clicking down there ATM. Factor in we've just thrown out our backline structure as well moving McEvoy back to the ruck.

In essense we've been great in patches, and ****ing woeful in others. I've told people it wont be our year, we'll be middle of the pack and we will see during trade period or if blokes like Scrimshaw/Hardwick can step up or if Worpel learns to crush a tag, Jones can develop an outside game to justify a spot, Impey gets back, How Will Day can keep it up and improve ect.

The whole "too old"shit is lame, We're not exactly bursting with 22/23 year old talent but our main contributors are the correct age

Thanks you've proven my point. Clarksons point as well.

So your going to "Give em a run" implying as your first point, giving them a go, But our guys we've drafted must be shit? Why? Didnt you say its all speculative? Or is it because they are rated or their number they were picked was higher?
