Good thread.

Me being shot down for about 10 pages when I had the nerve to say Graham was a dud trade.

Might be worth certain people going back and having a read-through.

Don't think anybody ever argued that Graham was a good player.

He was a bargain-basement (ended up being literally free in terms of draft picks) backup option for if Jacobs injured himself to the point he couldn't play. Our next best "first ruck" option on the list without Graham was Osborne.

Not much better than nothing, but still better than nothing. There's no question that doing that trade was better than not doing one. The only real question is whether a better option was available that we could have taken.

Because if Jacobs had injured himself, he would have been the next-best option to play.
And he would have been awful.

And we would have been better off rucking Jenkins/McKernan. Even Otten.

It remains that there was absolutely no upside to this trade.

Even though Jacobs was screaming out for a spell, we didn't give Graham even one game. Not even a token one at the end of the season when we couldn't make finals just to see if he was any good at all. We knew by that stage, what the average BigFooty fan could have told the club 12 months ago.

I think the club underestimated how unfit Graham really was. Noble said Graham was really disappointing and that he'd need a huge preseason. Let's face it he needs a bit more bulk a heap more aerobic capacity to even keep up at AFL level.

On a selection scale of 1-40 graham sits at 38 and that's because we haven't picked any players yet in the draft. The club clearly panicked in trading for him and really didn't do its due diligence. He was a back up because of the hunch the Tippett trade wasn't going to happen. If Jacobs does injure himself its always going to be Smack and Jenkins to crack in. Unless he has the best pre season ever and starts commanding a spot he will not play a senior AFC game and be delisted at the end of his contract.

Maybe if we were down on forwards, defenders, and Jacobs went down in finals and we needed to maintain team structure he might of got a go. I guess.

Had we known 2012 form wasn't going to continue into 2013 we probably would of gone with someone with a lot more development left in them, maybe we should of anyway.

Graham was only ever an insurance policy till one of our rucks developed (Osbourne or Dowdall)

Lets hope Osbourne has a beauty of a PS ........i believe he has some good forward instincts as well

One of the most pointless trades in our history. I suspect it was done in context of people yelling and screaming behind closed doors as Tippgate was unfolding

When I watched the Sturt games he looked like he'd snap in half like a twig if a crash and bash ruckman collided with him in the contest. Seriously, he turned side on and he disappeared. He run past a light pole and it took 15 seconds for him to emerge from the other side. He looks wafer thin.... or a waif. ....
Are we talking Angus Graham?

He's a 106kgs ....thats so far from being wafer thin?

The question we have to ask is the insurane premium (spot on our list) too much for this particular policy (equivalent of getting $100 to rebuild your house after a fire). I reckon he was our plan e or f.

Perhaps I mean, he looks like he needs to develop his core strength. A redistribution of muscle? I'm serious, unless the Sturt uniform is as tight fitting as shape-wear, it looked like he was very narrow through the body. More abs and pecs work? Or was all illusion of TV?

Our recruiting team has a reasonable track record .......if they chose Graham there must have been some game features they believed could be developed .......whilst not threatening the #1 ruck role

My take is the guy was no-where near fit ......look at some of the PS videos and Graham was well & truly trailing the pack (just like Marsh used to) ......get that right and who knows

Good question ......they say TV puts 5kgs on for actors ......but i swear footballers look thinner on TV

I know his arm strength looks fine. But to hold out a Bellchambers or Sandilans (ok impossible) his core strength would have to be good. My impression is that perhaps his abdominal region could be developed further. Ok I was being flippant with the posting, but after watching a couple of Sturt games this is my impression.

The other thing is he may have needed do draw deep breaths due to fitness issues and being in the "sucking in deep breaths" position it exaggerated things.

This you're going to have to explain to me ....as it's very confusing

Was it a last minute panic trade ? .......no, we did it quite early in the trade period last season

Didn't Ogilvie coach Graham at junior level ......maybe there's a silver lining we're not seeing
Ogilvie's judgement ain't normally that bad
