Are we playing it too cute with Ratten?

Re: Are be playing it too cute with Ratten?

I refuse to post in a thread with such poor spelling!

:D

No, I think we're doing it just fine with Ratten. Put the pressure on him but make the expectations (winning a final) very clear. Can't see him coaching anywhere else TBH, he's way too 'Carlton'.

Agreed on everything here. He would thoroughly understand that if he does his job that he will be wanted. None of the available coaching jobs are an upgrade over what he has at Carlton.

Re: Are be playing it too cute with Ratten?

nup....we've got a point to prove in the next 6-7 weeks that our improvement is the real deal.

Re: Are be playing it too cute with Ratten?

True, but he has also spent time with Melbourne and if they come forth with a larger offer right now, Ratten may just have something to think about?
A guarantee somewhere else or a probably where he is.

Just maybe.

I disagree. The only way Ratten will not be our coach next season is if he fails to deliver us at least one victory in the finals. That's as good a guarantee that a good quality coach (let alone one with such an esteemed playing career at the club) can expect. If he were to get a guaranteed contract offer from another team and take it then to me that signals that he doesn't believe in this team and that he isn't the right coach for the job. I don't believe Ratten thinks that way for a second.

Re: Are be playing it too cute with Ratten?

Thought it was a thread for pirates; arrr be some treasure over there......

Yeah yeah it's still early over here.

I think we'll be alright and he'll get a new gig, if for no other reason than the numerous comments made by players endorsing his coaching and personal development. If the playing group is on board you're half way there and as you say I certainly don't think he'd want to go.

TBH I think the team has shown enough improvement for the club to re-sign Ratts; I thought top 4 was a realisitic chance this year and we'll end up 1 spot away at worst.

Pull the trigger on a GF appearance next season. (although more than happy if we somehow made it this year too)

Re: Are be playing it too cute with Ratten?

Going to Melbourne is a step back in time for him to 2007 where he would be taking over a team that has some talent but overall is crap.

Add to the fact that he bleeds navy blue and he wont leave Carlton for another position while he still has a contract working for us.

Re: Are be playing it too cute with Ratten?

Personally? I'd keep Ratten. I believe he's displaying all the signs of a good finals coach. I believe that he clearly outcoached both Voss and Roos respectively in the last two finals despite the losses. The game was lost beyond Ratts control both years - he had no one at his disposal to stop the Paddle pops power forwards (Brown/Bradshaw) and had it not been for some butter fingers and shit luck late in the Swans game we'd have won there.

What the club has said? It would take something dramatic for the club to accept a third straight finals loss. What that entails, who really knows? I'd say he's safe as houses, however.

I think the subtext is we've done enough.....as you say the structures appear solid......I don't buy the winning a final is the clincher...we could lose two to injury on the day or anything could happen......the subtext is there, just wait and keep the eye on the prize.

The simple fact is Ratts and the players need to go out and give their absolute best every week, as long as the board and decision makers are sensible and understand the environment, the rest should look after itself

...but Carlton are prepared to walk away from him.

Highly unlikely anything will happen, but isn't it still possible in the current enviroment where vacant coaching positions abound?
I think they would but with the players being vocal about their support for him you would be brave in doing so

What if we lose the first final and are eliminated from finals assuming we finish 5th. Do we sack Ratten?

Furthermore you are assuming that other clubs would want Ratten as their Head coach, i beg to differ. Would he get the job at Melbourne, Footscray, and or Port Adeilade if that job came up. I still think he is learning, and the improvement has come from leading teams assesment of club. He has taken this on board which is great, the players as well. Also the intro of new coaches has added a lot to the group. Still for me has to win final, given we dont get multiple injuries on the day.

IIRC there was a whisper that melbourne asked him to apply with them when he was the caretaker at carlton?

but saying that, i dont for one second think ratten would leave carlton.

Suprised to see the words 'cute' and 'Ratten' in the same sentence :D .. but I digress.

I tend to agree with above. Does anyone seriously think Ratten would be being courted by another club.

I don't think he is high profile or 'sexy' enough for Melbourne or Adelaide - reckon Lyon wants to do an Eddie and land himself a big fish.

Bulldogs - don't see why they would for Ratten after sacking Eade. Think Cameron is home and hosed for that job.

(...did I just use 'sexy' and 'Ratten' in the same post ?).

If we can't win a final this year after the last 2 years' choking efforts then some serious questions need to be asked. Not sure if this means that Ratten is out, but I will be extremely disappointed in the team as a whole if we can't manage a single finals win this year.

I think he will be our coach for a long time, no matter who comes knocking at CFC's door they won't get in and whoever comes knocking on Ratts door I don't think he'd answer it.

Doing a great job is Ratts!:thumbsu:

Ratts has no want to be anywhere else and will be re-signed post season. He is a Carlton coach, not a career coach and aside from Roos, as long as he is not available, the next coach of Carlton will be either Ratts or from within.

Great Discussion Point! :thumbsu:

I think the way the team have "bought in" to ratts' game plan. He is as much a part of this team as the players. Everyone seems to be onboard.

If he were offered a concrete deal with Ade or Dees,or anyone for that matter, I think he would take the risk of not having a job next year, to maybe re sign with the blues.

His blood is blue, no chance of going anywhere!

And if they do replace Ratts next year it would be the highest expectations of any coach in the AFL imo probably barr Bucks.

Not sure Roosy would want that pressure of having to deliver straight away. Mick would thrive on it but not available. Would be a tough gig for anyone to take on given the expectations alot of us and the club have for 2012, 2013

This would not go down well at all.

I hope with the Coaching Merry-Go-Round we don't lose any of the assistants.
They have been a major difference to our improvements this year.

THIS^^^^^ I honestly think a major part of our improvement this year has come form Richardson & Brown and would be spewing if we lost either of them.:(

Ratten speaking to other clubs? No chance. Why would he? Our list is much further along. He's blue through and through (who cares if he was an assistant back in Danihers days) He's been challenged by the club and in return will get a contract extension.....the bar must be set, and this year the bar is WINNING a final. I think his completely and utterly focused on the task at hand.

If we were to be eliminated first week again.....3 years straight (I dont know a Carlton supporter who wouldn't be shattered if we finished 5th and were eliminated first week).....then i would expect the club to sit down and do a proper review, the question would then be asked,is Ratten the man to take us a step further?.....why can't we get past the firs week in finals? This finals series will show us how far we've come.....our time to start making a move is now.

I like how Swann and Sticks have handled this.

*For the record i think Ratts will win us a final and be at the helm in 2012:thumbsu:
