I genuinely thought Nicks would've released the shackles, let them play, let them use their superior kicking and footspeed and blitz Melbourne back to their front half. I thought he'd challenge them, from top to bottom; he's been able to motivate that playing list before, get them up for specific games at home.

Adelaide spent all night looking afraid. Afraid of losing, afraid of moving the ball wrong, afraid of committing to a tackle if it meant leaving your man who might then receive. Tex reaching the end is hurting them a lot; was a time where he couldn't miss at the Adelaide oval from anywhere within 60m.

The fans too have been pretty spoilt since they came into the comp; they might only have the two flags, but they contended between 97-98, made finals every year (and seriously contended in 2001-03) between 2001 to 2009, started to come good under Phil Walsh and made the grand final in 2017. They've had a lot of relative success, and haven't really had to struggle for relevance or to maintain their pride as a fanbase; they've not had to stick it out at the bottom of the ladder for very long.

Crows so rudderless much of the night. Only really came alive when they were so far behind that Melbourne took the foot off then they steadied almost the second Adelaide challenged milking the clock where they need to.

They’re really scared to take the kick back into the middle to open the game up, heaps of times they had opportunities on the telecast to but continued to go down the line.
Yeah it’s risky but you gotta take it on especially against Melbourne with their marking strength in the backline

I think Tex being way off his 2023 form is one of the biggest reasons for their drop off. They seem to have no structure forward of the ball and when they kicked to Tex he was fairly easily beaten most of the night
Yep.
Last year he kicked 76 goals in 22 games.
This year he's only kicked 2 (playing in 2 out of the 4). That's a lot of goals that they're missing.

Good second half last night. Thought the Crows had enough going for them to win it at the end but just made some poor decisions in key moments. They had a really good run with the momentum.

Really thought they'd be fighting near the bottom of the 8 this season. It'll suck for their fans that their season is effectively over 4/5 weeks in.

For their fans, yes... for me, 🤣...

Mate I just wish I could trust us, but with Hinkley in the coaches box, I'm nervous!!!
When I’m reading and hearing people talk about the * Edge (TM), I feel quite nauseous. Time for someone to sort them out, Phil. If you feel the need to step into the rooms and give a motivational speech, then please make sure to do so.

After his first three games this year he's kicked 3 goals.

After his first three games last year he'd kicked.....3 goals.

Yeah, ok I read it wrong, the stats weren't updated with last night's game.
But 1 goal a game compared to an average of nearly 3 and a half.
And of those first 3 games last year, they lost 2. In 11 wins last year, he went goalless once, kicked 2 once, and every other win kicked at least 3.

You should be fine, it's not a finals game after all.
"Finals are scary". (Ken Hinkley September 2023) I've come to learn that Ken only talks crap when his lips move :).

Does Pickett get two weeks for being a slow learner ?
I'd like to see him get weeks for it (even just 1 week), but his hits on Smith and Cripps were far worse than this one. Smith one only got 2 weeks (classic case of penalising the outcome, not the action - was pure dumb luck that Smith didn't have his mullet knocked clean off). Cripps one got a week, despite Cripps coming off bleeding.
Both were graded as careless.
As much as I'd like previous history to count, it doesn't. This will be graded careless, low impact, high contact and be a fine.
He's never going to learn. Neither will the AFL until somebody gets seriously hur... oh, wait, somebody just retired prematurely from concussion...

By the way, I don't know if any of you guys saw this during the week, but apparently before the start of the season, the odds for West Coast going through the whole of 2024 without a win were at $101.00. After 3 games, those odds have dropped to $26.00.

Titus O'Reilly said that Gather Round is a special time of the season where South Australia hosts all 17 AFL Clubs and the West Coast Eagles.

I wouldn't be surprised if they grade it medium impact on the basis that high contact is often assessed for "potential" injury, not just the actual outcome.

If Baker got a week, Kozzie will and should get a week.

Other clubs' fans would cry foul at a Carlton supporter arguing for their players to get suspended, but I'm confident now that the contact that Cripps (eventually) got off for would also now be a suspension under the current guidelines. Simply put - the landscape has changed this year. If you're careless and clock a bloke high with any moderate degree of force you'll be getting suspended. Deliberate hits or especially forceful careless hits (or ones that are unlucky enough to result in a concussion) will be 2+ weeks.

Don't worry. They lose by 9 goals in finals.

The collective minds at Adelaide don’t agree.
