So they’re not picking the test captain for the ashes?
Probably not. Sad story of sacrifice. Big decisions have too be made on output. Terrible way to go, That wasnt deserv

Well. This aged well. Paine did not read the room and he was setting himself for the 2025 ashes series. He come in at a time they needed a sacrificial lamb. Unfortunately with his known output in question and the fact he is doin the old Healy to Gilchrist sufference ( stating there is no Gilly in the back sheds) it is time to go. Thankyou too him, He lived a dream and captained Aus. It is terrible the way it happened, It is force removal.

Inglis or just go Wade
No. His glovework has improved out of sight from where it once was, but he is still barely a club level keeper.
Probably Carey ahead of Inglis. Not that either are amazing, but generally competent.
A couple of years back it would have been Piersen. Once Whiteman stopped keeping Jimmy was probably next best. But from the little I've seen he's fallen away.

As for captain, surely too early for Labs. CA won't go back to Smith off the back of a scandal. Which really leaves three of the bowlers, given Starc really should not be sure of a position. Australia doesn't pick bowlers as captains though, Benaud was the last full timer captain to also be a full time bowler.
Surely going from out of the team to captain would be asking too much of Khawaja.
I can see them going Warner, on the basis of "who the **** else is there?" but he really does come across as being as thick as proverbial pigshit. edit: and, yes, I know Warner is banned from leadership

No inglis is very competent keeper and is very good with the gloves

Is Inglis ready for test cricket though? Or Phillipe?

I like the potential of both however I'm not sure they're ready for test cricket just yet, let alone an Ashes series.

Carey has no form at the worst time. Long earmarked as having next but based off his recent form he in no way deserves a spot.

Wade is perhaps my no.1 choice right now. Kept well in the T20i world cup and isn't overwhelmed by the big moment as he's shown several times. 2 test tons in England last series and getting us home in the world cup. He won't be flustered by coming in last minute.

People talked about Marsh being picked on the back of momentum, well Wade has a bit going for him as well right now.

So with Tim Paine goneskis. I can see the Aus selectors trying to replace his experience with more experience. This suits both Khawaja and Head imo.

1. Khawaja
2. Warner
3. Labs
4. Smith
5. Head
6. Green
7. Inglis/Carey
8. Cummins
9. Lyon
10. Richardson/Starc
11. Hazelwood

Captaincy, i'm torn between Cummins and Labs. Leaning towards Cummins because he's been VC but what happens with their fast bowler rotation policy? Does Labs become VC or potentially someone like Hazelwood/Lyon if Cummins is rested?

I would just go straight back to Smith tbh. He's served his time both out of the team and with the captaincy. Then you can bring the form 1st class keeper and player (55 runs @ 73 with 3 hundreds last season) in Inglis in.

Head or Usi could do it probably slightly better but neither can survive 3 tests without a score, and then you're back to the drawing board.

Cummins I think should only play 4/5 tests and having done bowling captain myself it is really ****ing hard for a pacer (I know it's not comparable but even at club level it is so much harder).

What I actually think will happen is they will want to "minimise disruption" and Paine will play the series then retire with Cummins as captain, and the on field distraction will make things more disruptive.

Inglis has played more first class matches than Carey tbf and has as many first class hundreds as Paine. He's about as ready as you'd expect someone to be making their Test debut.

They have said that Paine may remain as keeper anyway

yeah but if Cummins gets the nod he will have two ex test skippers in the team

for me that would make me very uncomfortable…if Cummins is made captain Paine has to go and I could see them go wade due to his experience for keeper and experience overall to help Cummins

I would love to see Inglis if smith gets made captain they might go josh

It’ll be Paine‘s last hurrah this ashes series in any event if he’s picked. With so many tests played in the subcontinent next year, I’m glad it’ll be Inglis and Carey on tour

Weirdly can see them going Paine as keeper with a small tap on shoulder for end of the series

Well now Paine is out the way the selectors who have been too scared to move on because they loved the good guy image he provided can bow actually move on and employ the services of any of the 5 better keepers our country actually has. And we can get Cummins in the role. It's not the way it should have ended but we'll it has. If he isn't captain he isn't even good enough to be in the side. Should retire.

Inglis for me. Let’s get some fresh blood in a young guy. Carey is already 30
Sad thing for Carey is if sandpaper gate never happened, he'd have been Australia's keeper the last three years.

Sliding doors. Would have won the India series too.

Has done an excellent job captaining the Strikers and the Redbacks when given the opportunity. Has earned his right to wear the gloves in the test team.
The issue is. The captaincy locks him in long term ala T.Paine, before we’ve even established if hes capable of holding a spot in the test side

Well tht and the fact the bloke is in horrible form

I'm guessing the bowler rotation policy now excludes Pat Cummins

Pat's awesome but I really don't want a fast bowler as Captain.

As durable as he's been since his return they're most likely to get injured + are more likely to push themselves too far resulting in an injury when trying to win the game for their team.

Best option IMO is to bring Khawaja in for 12 months so he can guide us through The Ashes and some tough overseas assignments. if the runs aren't there make a more permanent decision next summer.

Has to be Usman opening in the first Test, surely?

I'd back him in over the alternatives, even if he hasn't strictly been opening for QLD. He's done it enough before.
Nope. I'm with Chappell on Khawaja.
Time to overlook Usman who has had his chances. Too old to be going back to someone who isn't the answer.

Khawaja averages above 40 at Test level. Which of the alternatives could boast that record?

I wish it could be Puc, but it can't. I like Hunt too, but not sure if he's ready.
