In all respect to Boyd, but doesn't the bloke barely talk? Great footballer but I can't say id ever consider him to be coaching material, hopefully im wrong

Just because he does not like the limelight does not mean he barely talks. Most of the blokes you hear talk do so as they want work in the media . Clearly not a pathway Boyd has been interested in.

Good to have kept Lockyer.

Mostly to stick it up all the armchair critics that have NFI and no insight.

2 past players I have spoken to said he was Crackling bloke but the learnt very little from him. According to them rocca was considerably worse. Another nice bloke who had NFI how to coach. They both loved burns and said he was a very good developer.

Boyd: So you want me as an assistant Bucks?

Bucks: What? Nah mate, we want you to come out of retirement and play at CHF to replace Blairy. How does 4 years on 600k per year sound?

Boyd: Too right cobba! Sign me up!

It was thissss bigggg Boydy!! Tru dinks!!

If as is being reported that Harvey is staying then that's a major disappointment.

It seems to me that if you are told at the end of July that there was no guarantee you were going to be offered a new contract and since that time you fail to pick up another gig, what does that say about how the rest of the competition views your skill set and coaching credentials.

Burns had no trouble finding a role.

I'm staggered the club has kept him.

Not sure if was posted early, I heard something on SEN about Jame Hird joining the pies ? PLEASE NO!

Pretty sure that rumor started on a fake sports facebook page.

Alistair Clarkson, Luke Beveridge, Ross Lyon, Leon Cameron - all had arguably lesser playing careers than Matty Boyd.

Your comments above piqued my interest. I don't believe their status as a player is an issue. Is is all about gaining experience as an assistant coach and being exposed to as many different coaches as possible.

Here is the history of the four coaches you named above before they became senior coaches compared to the coaches with some "better playing careers" over the past 20 years. The old adage "By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail" is never more evident when you look at the history.

Alistair Clarkson
During his playing days, Clarkson was a teacher at Wesley College.
1998: Runner with the Melbourne Football Club
1999: Assistant coach under Tim Watson at St Kilda
2000: Coach of Werribee in the VFL
2001: Coach of Central Districts in South Australia, where he was premiership coach in his debut year 2001.
2002: Clarkson guided Central District to the SANFL Grand Final. However, they ended up losing to Sturt.
2003: He became the midfield coach at Port Adelaide and was part of their coaching team in the premiership season of 2004.
2005: Appointed coach of Hawthorn.

Ross Lyon
1996-1999: Assistant coach to Robert Walls at Richmond
2000–2004: Spent five years at Carlton both as an assistant coach and as the club's VFL coach where he worked alongside David Parkin and Denis Pagan.
2005-2006: Midfield coach at Sydney, and was instrumental in helping the Swans reach consecutive grand finals in 2005 and 2006.

Luke Beveridge
2006-2008: Coached St Bede's to the C, B and A Grade premierships in consecutive seasons.
2009-10: Player development manager at Collingwood, where he had an input to the club's 2010 premiership.
2012-2014: Assistant coach at Hawthorn specialising in working with the club's defence, culminating in two premierships

Leon Cameron
2004-2010: Assistant coach at WB
2011-2012: Assistant coach at Hawthorn
2013: Assistant coach at GWS

Nathan Buckley
2008-2009: Commentator for Channel Seven
2010-2011: Assistant coach at Collingwood, culminating in the 2010 premiership. Rightly or wrongly MM has always downplayed Buck's input.

Tim Watson
1994-1999: Commentator for Channel Seven
2000-2001: Coach of St.Kilda for two unsuccessful seasons

James Hird
2008-2010: Commentator and football analyst for Fox Sports

Michael Voss
2007-2008: Commentator and football analyst for Channel 10
Michael Voss says if he had his time over again he wouldn’t have accepted the role of Brisbane Lions coach, instead preferring to do his time as an assistant.

Maybe part of the restructure is Harvey moving to VFL coach and promoting Rivers to Backline coach. Just trying to find the positives here lol.

It seems nobody wanted Harvey's services except Franga in the VFL, hardly a glowing endorsement. Carlton gave him the arse back in the day when they were no good(not much has changed)and the Saints didn't want a bar of him.

As I've mentioned before it may also be tough to attract quality coaches, what are they going to learn from Nathan? Maybe that means we get stuck with a less than stellar support cast.

R.Harvey has won an assistant coach of the year award, is one of 7 assistant coaches - with Goodwin, Dew, Barker, Kingsley - to have completed the new level 4 accreditation designed by the Afl to groom the next senior coaches.

What makes him a poor assistant coach? Industry clearly rates him highly!

Was that's why he was snapped up so quickly by other clubs when he was told by pies his contract wasn't guarenteed... oh wait he wasn't snapped up was he

No they don't. As an uncontracted assistant, clubs would have been all over him with various contract offers if they were trying to pry him away from the pies. As it was stated before, "very disappointing!"

Burns is another who's undertaken the level 4 accreditation, yet we allowed him to walk

By completing a course that one cannot fail?. Since the course was implemented 5 years ago, only coaches that have completed the course as won Assistant Coach of the Year.

Add:
AIS-AFL Academy squad (assistant) 2008-2009
Vic Country U16 (coach) 2009

Think a couple of players from those teams may be playing for us now.

The question has to be asked, why would Burns walk away from a best mate? I mean ok not guarenteed a contract but seriously he's left a good mate.

This is the opposite of what happened at Richmond. A best mate in Carracella said hey Dimma, I'm on board. I'm backing you in mate. Let me help you.

Burns didn't even wait to find out if he had a job. Legged it quick sticks. Is it a case of a bloke who's had a gutful and leaving a sinking ship?

Probably more a case of a guy trying to add to his CV.

Deep down are you really?

My understanding is that Burns started it this year, yet to complete it.

Harvey has completed it, and has won an assistant coach of the year award. So clearly has been doing somethings right.

Yet posters have decided he is a dud, just because he wasn't poached.

Sounds more like a "plant" to me. "Burnsy....go do 2 years with Clarko and then when Bucks goes in a couple of years, well you've done your apprenticeship and the jobs yours!"
