Australia vs India, 4th test at the SCG, Jan 3rd - 7th

He was averaging 88 for WA. If he goes back he’ll pile on plenty of runs in shield cricket.

He got a couple of good balls in Melbourne and is doing as well as anyone else this series.

Stop using his Shield runs as a basis for selection, he's played enough Tests now for us to see what his output is going to look like, at best it's one big score amongst a string of single figure scores OR it's a bunch of starts. He's never going to be consistent at this level regardless of if he's hitting runs for WA.

Also find it odd that you seem to think he has issues in spinning conditions and aside from that he's great. You don't seem to understand Shaun Marsh at all, he has hit runs in all conditions including South Africa and Sri Lanka. His issue is it's always a flash in the pan and he can never put together a string of good form (unless it's against genuinely inept bowling like against England last year).

I'd hate to think it's state bias causing you to defend him but the bloke has absolutely nothing to offer us in England, especially when collapses against the swinging ball are our main issue and he's the worst starter we have. I would rather even Head or Labuschagne in the middle order at this point, get Marsh out of the Test team so he can start focusing on short form cricket for this years World Cup, that should be the last of him at International level.

But if they didn’t lay the Hume Fwy in the middle of the ground there might still have been hope of a decent game
But I wasn't responding to your comment about the pitch, only to what you said about the weather. I was trying to give you a bit of insight so you could understand.

To do so further, out here in the west, on Saturday it peaked at 42 I think until a change came in late afternoon, which resulted in rain and a temperature drop of between 10-15 degrees. Bang, just like that.

The city isn't so extreme, but you get the idea.

It’s funny that Melbourne has the wet weather reputation but it rains in Melbourne, you wait 5 minutes and the sun is out. Sydney and Brisbane when it rains it really rains. On Friday the change in Melbourne saw the temp drop like that but only a drop of rain, just enough to make the car dirty but not wet the ground!

As long as the rain has been falling on the fires

Given an extra 50-100 runs could've made a huge difference to the series in Adelaide or Melbourne I wouldn't say that missing batsmen who average about 130 between them at home is likely not to have made a difference. We'll never know but every chance that it would've done. Also I'm not aware of any very good players India are missing
Xtreme which players are India missing from this series?

Nothing to do with state bias. He’s more likely to make runs in England than any other option. No one is forcing him out of the team. That’s all there is to it,

Picking a young player over him to face Anderson and Broad in England, with a merciless crowd, media, on Smith’s return will be sending lambs to the slaughterhouse. No one is outperforming him domestically. He’s still the best man for the job imo.

That attitude devalues every test match played.
A few years ago when rained ruined the Sydney test against the West Indies, Smith, when the West Indies’ first innings was still going into the fifth day, proposed that he bowl some of his batsmen, let the Windies go the tonk for an hour, then declare their innings, Australia’s first, and the windies’ second for 0, leaving Australia a target to chase on the last afternoon. Holder rightly refused and the general consensus agreed with him - its a test match, not a meaningless one dayer or T20. All tests mean something.

South Africa during the hiding they copped against India in 2015(?) were set 500 or something in the last innings of the series, already down 3-0. They knew they couldn’t chase 500, but with Amla, De Villiers, elgar and Du Plessis in their side, they thought they may have been able to stonewall their way to a draw. And they made India earn every bit of the victory that they ultimately got. Yeah, a series loss is a series loss, but there’s no shame in accepting the cut and dried reality that victory is so far out of reach that getting a draw is at least a minor success, and setting your sights on achieving it.
but the difference here is that the series is (was) still alive

Never heard someone’s performances excused so much by the “he got a good ball” or “unlucky” excuse as Shaun, it’s ridiculousz Couldn’t possiby be that he just isn’t good enough at test level? Plenty of good domestic players could never quite take the extra step.

Marsh must get a lot of good ****ing balls, because he has done **** all for years

Sydney’s long term average rainfall is almost twice that of Melbourne and that is a fact.
In fact Sydney is the second wettest capital city in Australia behind Darwin who get the monsoons.

He’s still the most likely to make runs over there. There is no one else ready to step up and replace him. Marsh is averaging 88 from 3 shield matches this year and you’re absolutely kidding yourself if you think anyone else will come in and save the day for us against Anderson and Broad in England.
89 oz team to tour england was the worst of all time. Hello Steve waugh, slater and a few others who kicked arse. Hayden couldn't get a game. They were young and they had talent.

Time to wipe the slate clean with 36 yo who might do okay.

Think you have 1989 and 1993 mixed up with regards to Hayden. He hadn't even debuted for Queensland in 1989.

Shield players in that era on the verge of test selection we’re averaging 60 in shield cricket and scoring 1000 runs every season.

Picking mediocre batsmen at shield level and thinking that they’ll be match winners at test level - especially overseas is ludicrous.

The batting landscape is a lot bleaker in Australia now than at any other era over the last 40 years.

A 35 year old Marsh is the best we’ve got.

At least we got Jones, Waugh, Boon and Taylor (who started their test careers as 20-25 year olds) out of the baptism of fire during the 1980s. All of them turned out to be great contributors in the 1989 Ashes. Sure they got smashed by the likes of West Indies during the decade but at least they were young and developing. Sure the Shield is nowhere near what it was but maybe we need to start it again. Smith will anchor the batting.

Iyer and Nair are good batsmen but I think they have some technical limitations, still very good talents.

Shubman Gill though is the real deal. Was the player of the last U19 world cup and he looked a level above all the other U19 players in the tournament. He's just 19 years old and is pretty similar to Kohli in his playing style and shots and is also a big bottom handed player like him. He has had a great start to his Ranji career hitting 3 tons including a big double hundred in 8 matches. If he maintains his form for a few more matches for his fc team and India A, he might get fast tracked to the test team like his U19 teammate Prithvi Shaw.

The Indian team might easily look like this in its next overseas assignment to NZ:

Agarwal
Shaw
Pujara
Kohli (c)
Rahane
Gill
Pant (wk)
Ashwin/Jadeja
Bhuvi
Ishant/Shami
Bumrah
