My Ode to Bob
My mind is racing just staring at the ceiling.
Thinking how the other lads must be feeling.
In the blink of an eye, could it be the end.
If only I could turn back time, my dear friend.

So cruel footy can be, it's a game of inches and seconds.
Success is calling, and history beckons.
The leader of men, a shining light
When our club was down, you were always ready to fight

It won't be the same if you don't come back
Who will lead from the front when we counter attack.
Oh our Bob how you were leading us to glory.
Let's hope there is still a happy ending to this story.
Go Dogs!

Love that, Pugz89. You should send it to the club. :thumbsu:

Also what is it with that Hawthorn tactic of standing some one next to the man on the mark? Can you shepherd the man on the mark now or does he only do it after play on is called?

Just one of Hawthorn's normal cheating tactics that umps are too scared to police. They have been doing it for quite some time and no one says anything [/QUOTE]

I came up with a cheating tactic of my own during the game. Leigh Matthews made the comment at some stage that each Mitchell possession is worth two because it always goes to a team mate. looks to be true. So if you crunch him after his disposal the free kick downfield is meaningless and the tactic would limit his effectiveness later in the game. Probably unsociable football but pot ,kettle, black.

Hodge and Mitchell pretty much invented unsociable footy in the modern game. Would very much like to see Mitchell "Mummified" a la Duncan as and when the chance arises....

Well done to Caleb Daniel for shutting Mitchell out. Extraordinary effort in the 3rd. Just a terrific young footballer and going to have an outstanding career.

Loved watching the dogs play, would have been content with a dogs win. Looking forward to seeing you guys deep in September. Good luck

I want to know why Bob was left defending both Sicily and Breust? In the dying seconds of the game, why the hell didn't we have players back??

Too late for "what if's" but hopefully they'll learn from it

Think hamling pushed up to far. But the ball should never have popped out of congestion like it did. It was almost a lucky play in that Birchall scrubbed the barell and feel into Hawks arms.

By too far I mean hamling I think was the player caught in absolute no mans land. Either had to stay back or push up to where the kick in landed.

Next game, I think we have them. So many times, the run of the green was clearly poo colored....
Birchall is a very dirty player and I hope gets rubbed out during the week. To take a player out that far from the ball, in a statement game, is admitting that you know you can't win without cheating. Poor form on his behalf and since this isn't the first game it has been done by the Hawks, it appears a tactic.
No Hawks fans will acknowledge that it is the wrong thing, their glasses can't see it.

Shocking we let it happen. Footy 101 says if you're clinging to a 3 pt lead with a minute or so left you out you put a man or two down back. I'm pretty pissed off we let that happen.

Losing our inspirational leader to an ACL is ******* gut wrenching.
Thank god we have Adcock to play a similar role.
I just wish we had someone who can put pressure on Matty Boyd spot in the side because when he's under pressure he's terrible and so damn slow with the footy!
Are Webb or Dale close to looking ready for a spot off half back?
Could not agree more!

Just as an aside...how ****ed is the deliberate rule now?

Every single deliberate call today, to both us and to them - whilst technically correct - was completely wrong.

What I mean is - according the rules (I/e what the AFL changed the rule to) it is paid, but that's the problem. It shouldn't have been paid because it's not deliberate. Each and every deliberate call today was ridiculously harsh on the player they pinged it on.

Really wish the AFL would stop screwing around with this rule. They've already screwed up holding the ball and now this rule change is driving everyone crazy.

I refused to even cheer for the deliberate calls that went our way today, that's how bad it is.
Yep, they've taken the fun out of appealing for deliberate when it clearly wasn't, because sometimes it is now.

Suckling's I can cop, he overcooked the theatrics when it was clear he just wanted to dive across the line for a try. If they paid them regularly I'd be OK with it.

Its the long kicks up field along the boundary that are getting chased down, or other players have a chance to get to but it goes out that annoys me. Under the new rules, everyone should get pinged like Aker did in that Prelim Final which is fine. But Not when you have a team mate who could have taken possession!

Thanks. That's ****ing impressive - Mitchell is a terrific player.
He is also a horrible campaigner. Tried to break Daniel's neck at one point. Will be glad to see him out the game, bloke's a coward. Pulls that sort of stuff all the time in an era where he knows he'll never have to shape up and take his medicine.

while I'm obviously devastated about Bob, I have woken up with a funny feeling this morning because for the first time since our resurgence begun I feel like we are good enough to go all the way now, not in a year or two.

Hawthorn nor anyone else scare me anymore.

We are a very good team and once we manage to handle our nerve better we will be very hard to beat.

He'll get a Brownlow if Jobe hands his back

To add to my comment above Adams also was caught out of position. Those two in particular were caught in the wrong place. Hamling needed to be 20m further up and Adams further back.

This happens with lack of playing time together. Cohesion takes time to build. Accordingly I would like to settle our back six asap. I would like Collins in there too soon for the same reasons.

These sorts of games will only help to serve our ability to hold our nerve in big games. Yesterday and the final against Adelaide were two close games with a lot on the line in front of big crowds. Hopefully it allows the players to become more comfortable in high pressure situations.

Great crowd of 47k yesterday. And was easily in favour of the dogs

Yep time is needed with those guys and I am desperate to get Collins in this side to protect us from the high ball. How many contested grabs did they take 20m out in front of goal. Hurt having wood out of the side, thankfully though Adams has done a great job limiting the high ball damage yesterday.

I think opposition teams just bomb the ball in long because of our pressure up field. The difference being that the Hawks forwards are so well instructed to space out and that limits the number of 3rd man up situations. Collins would have killed a couple of those goals and we need to give him senior time as he is a 12 year player for us. Unfortunately I think hamling/cordy comes in when Moz retires and yesterday highlighted my genuine concern about not having a big tall strong full back. Adams is vital but he needs a bigger taller team mate to take the full back slot.

Agree, and it's been quite a while since I've felt that level of passion from the doggies faithful in a home and away match. We need to bring that every week.

I had the same feeling as I was leaving Etihad. Despite the poor start the the match on the scoreboard, it's clear that the gaps between our best and worst football are rapidly decreasing. We can beat anyone.

I'm still wondering why Jack Macrae kicked down the line with two minutes to go when we had a loose man behind the play. Could of and should of iced the game! If's and buts hey?

The reality is we're truly in the conversation now for flag chances this year. That's awesome. I do think though that the Eagles and Swans will prove better than the Hawks and they'll be bigger tests for us.

In a completely different note, Hunter is frustrating me this season. His disposal is so sketchy for a purely outside player. I find myself expecting a horrible kick whenever he has the ball. Given he's also one-paced, I have to wonder if we'd be better served by a Webb or Dale in that role and slotting Hunter into another role?

Just a memory of the game, i think it was in the 2nd, hunter streaming out, no one running to him, but he handballs over the top to libba i think, suicide ball, It was almost like he HAD to handball it, then i ponder, did the prospect of having to bounce the ball and keep going until a player was drawn to him unnerve him? Was that why he was rushed?! because he had no reason to go early other then not being certain of the bounce.

Was very strange.
