fukkit... roughy...rupture...tragedy...5 points...

only 1 straight kick in it...

I cant bring myself to even download the game, lost in the wilderness with no tv, no radio, only internest...

From the Geelong Board:

Selwood in that last quarter was just awesome:eek:
So glad Franklin didn't get a free for diving. Umps need to make sure they don't bring this into our game like it does in soccer.

Irony is unbelievable.

can someone clear something up for me?

how can franklin get pushed over the line (fair), then tackled to the ground (not fair), and then manage to give away a free kick?

yes, i'm pretty sure he did put his arm around the guy's shoulder, but given that it the ball was no longer in play - and there was no longer a reason to be tackled - i would have thought that if there was a free kick to be given at all, then it surely should have ended up with franklin?

i was no more than 25m away and it was simply an awful decision!

there's no way to say this without sounding petty, but something really needs to be done about the way franklin's actions are adjudicated in comparisson to the rest of the league on average.

i haven't seen footage of that last in the back so i can't really comment. my first thought was that it was

the result of that decision ended up straight down the other end for a geelong goal, whereas it should have been a throw in, perhaps even a shot at goal for hawthorn.

well done geelong, but i feel that we at hawthorn have the right to feel a little bit dudded.

BOG
3. Mitchell brilliant all night
2. Rioli kept us going when the whole side was cooked
1. Birchall saved our bacon numerous times
WOG
3. Hodge absolute nightmare of the highest order
2. Lewis 26 of the worst touches I have ever seen. Murdered the ball.
1. Gibson had a shocker all night
honourable mention goes to burger who again disappeared when we needed him the most.

Every time renouf plays we lose. Time to persist with Bailey and rough in the ruck. Bring smith back in, young butchers the ball. Mentally weak against Geelong when it comes to the 4th qtr. Very disappointing. No excuses, should've gone on with it when we had them by the balls yet again.

I didnt think Renouf played too badly around the grounds to be honest

What killed us at the end was our disposal forward of centre with 8 minutes lift...far too many rubbish disposals that resulted in turnovers due to poor decision making with the ball

Don't worry about them X.

When they are bagging the players, we will be too busy making another one of these.

Not that ****in' thing again :p

It was really a horrible decision that one. He was tackled over the line and then was slung to the ground which would draw a free kick 90% of the time as the ball is out of play and there is no need to carry on. Then he supposedly got his opponent in a headlock (?) but channel 10 didn't show it and I don't recall a replay of the incident. It was an issue all game though. They'd pay some soft as butter free kicks to Geelong but then let those same ones go for us.

Not much you can do though. Was obvious from the first quarterwe were going to do it tough. Our last quarter was poor though and the Loss of Roughead hurts far more than any defeat in a H&A game at the hands of Geelong would.

Poppy doesn't fit the criteria. I'm talking about kids, not a man who eats steel for meals.

*Also forgot to add the Breuster, because he is a god amongst men.

To answer the question: I rate poppy highly. Quickly becoming one of my favourite players in Hawthorn colours. Reminds me of Browny, without the big paycheque and the off the ball sniping. The sort of player who prefers to run through rather then run around. Has been superb this year (especially the last 2-3 weeks)

well Explained SSSSSS i just thought from last weeks game he played there wasnt a great deal of praise for him on BF i came over to watch and was super impressed with his job on Ballaytne did a lot of unrewarded hard running and kept him out of the game.

then Clarko moved him up forward and applied some forward pressure which was needed

Cheers

Jordan Lewis kept us in the game in the 2nd quarter. Kicked a nice goal, was rucking 3rd man up when Renouf had just lost 5 straight clearances and was doing the grunt work. A few turnovers didn't affect his standing in last nights game. With Shiels as one of our best.

Two goals vs Gibson, he was actually having his jumper held yet the free went the other way and Two were from quick ball moment that no defender stops. After half time, he fought back well.

Burgoyne on the other hand. Burgone missing again. Occasionally you can see that Port Adelaide culture in the lad. When presenting and involved he's devastating. When not, you get nothing from him at all. Still not convinced he was worth Willo and Pick 9 tbh.

So what's up with Hodge? Injured and/or out of form?

Bad luck tonight. Your boys played well for the most part. Worst thing is Roughead. Poor bloke.

Sam Mitchell is an out and out star. Sometimes I think he is not appreciated enough for what he does, week in, week out. Can't believe he has never made AA.

Hi everyone,

I don't often post on here but thought I'd add my observations from the ground level of the Ponsford stand last night.

One thing that was really noticeable about our setup was having no one in the forward line at centre bounces. Franklin and whichever small forward was there at the time (Breust, Osborne, Whitecross) would line up on the centre square and Scarlett would be standing 30m out from goal on his own. The instruction seemed to be that if we won the clearance to not kick it forward but to kick it to the flanks. This reminded me a bit of Essendon circa 2000 where they tried to get numbers to certain areas and get the ball into that spot. I think the main reason was that we were scared about Geelong's ability to cut us to shreds on the counter attack.

I thought the effort from our guys was terrific, they just couldn't quite will themselves over the line at the end. Shiels was terrific, Birchall was huge in the last quarter (seems to be impacting on more marking contests). I was really pleased with Schoenmakers in the second half, I thought he cut Podsiadly out of the game. I think Tom Murphy has greatly improved as a player, but to take the next step he just needs to impact a little more when he is third man up (I'm not taking a shot at him, just saying where he could improve). Sewell and Mitchell were brilliant around the clearances, the way Mitchell attacked the ball in the centre to set up that goal to Savage should be highlighted in the review tapes.

I'm shattered about Roughead and wish him all the best on his recovery. As for the umpires I don't think I'll waste time commenting on them, but the old lady sitting next to me had a few choice words.

Cheers

If you genuinely think Lewis was WOG then you know absolutely **** all about football. Sure he butchered a few kicks - but he and Shiels were the reason we turned the game in the second quarter.

This. But LMR is a serial Lewis hater. Interestingly he has gone missing over the last couple of weeks since Lewis has been playing well and pops up with this tripe

What? Likely??

How many ruptured achillies have we seen in the last 5 years?

Definitely the increaded workload might be a factor but this was a plantar flexion twist. Not a leap. This did not come from a jumping movement.

If we had not recently lost Robert Campbell, Max Bailey or David Hale we would not have had to roll the dice with Roughie.

Rough has been left out of a great deal of the mid week training to cope with his increased work load.

Of course him rucking is not ideal.

I can imagine the bitching had we left Brent on his own to ruck all night......

(do you know what plantar flexion is?)

well, it's basically flexing at the ankle. the calf muscle retracts (flexion) and brings the foot (plantar) towards the calf area and reduces the angle at the back of the lower leg to less than 90deg, in other words, straightening it.

I'm pretty sure the calf/soleus area was stretched and extended at the moment that it popped. do you know what eccentric strain is? he stepped backward prior to accelerating (common) and the strain of resisting this movement is most likely what caused the rupture, not the flexion of the muscle, which is actually far less stressful. you don't tend to get soft tissue injuries from flexing. you get it from trying to stretch the muscle after flexing, or (as in this case) from resisting against force that are trying to stretch the muscle out.

whilst it may have been difficult to specifically identify that it would have been an achilles, if you had told me that one of the 44 players from last nights game would injure his calf/achilles I would have guessed it was roughead, because he has had a recent increase in his workload and has been jumping and landing heavily more.

yes, the state of our ruck department makes this issue a difficult issue to solve, however my main argument was that this injury was largely predictable, not that he should never have done any ruckwork at all. I noticed lewis pinch hitting in the ruck around the ground a bit last night. perhaps the load could have been shared even more? it's a tricky one, and the club did well to come up with ruffy to fill the gap, but I just think that he was used a bit too often and that maybe they could have compromised a bit in previous matches, for example.

by the way, this is a MASSIVE shame, because jarryd seemed to be just starting to really find his feet again... :(

I only say gibbo as i think he kicked a couple of goals this year and worth a long shot and can take a mark. Pretty sure he played forward with the roos at times too.

Gibson has never kicked a goal since he joined the club from North Melbourne. You must have your wires cross.

Schoenmakers has kicked one goal in his Hawthorn career, but played footy as a forward in his junior years. However, I would leave him in defence. He looks to have grown very comfortable in that role - did some nice work on Pods who was on fire in the first half, but went stone cold in the second half.

Anyway, I think your hypothetical is moot for 2011. I very much doubt that Stratton will be back this season.

I guess my disappointment lies in the way we approached the last quarter. We were on top in the clearances, kicked the last 5-6 goals of the match etc., yet Lance starts in the middle and with the exception of 2 forwards 50 entries the game is played in our defensive half.

Gotta keep the pressure on. Make guys like Scarlett accountable instead of sitting back waiting to setup play. Back your self to win the clearance (like we had been), throw a Pup on Scarlett (his forward pressure this year has been terrific when given a chance) and in the forward mix and play to win the game, not try to hold on.

When the game was there for the taking at the start on the last quarter, we went on the back foot.

Burgoyne is flat out lazy. Doesn't run hard to the open space. Hodge had a shocker. And Schoenmakers another who was very poor. And what is with Hawthorn kicking. Very poor, countless of times they kicked it to Cats. And then players who fall over too quickly and simply give up.

Made the mistake of reading the coverage in the Age newspaper of last night's game. It has me angry and disappointed all over again.

Sure you're not confusing Schoenmakers with Gibbo? I thought Schoey did a fine job of quelling Podsiadly after Pods kicked six goals in the first half.

In a lot of ways it was a really gutsy performance by our boys but I can't help thinking it was a big step backwards for the club.

You just cannot keep losing to the cats from 3 and 4 goals up in the last quarter and keep the faith that we can beat them. Don't think both teams won't be thinking about that when they bounce the ball in a prelim. There is just no excuse to keep folding like that.

Also, while no one doubt hodge is a champion, as captain he us letting his boys down at the moment. Time for the real Luke Hodge to stand up.
