Europe Backdrop to the war in Ukraine

This is the thread for the geopolitics, history and framework around the Russia-Ukraine conflict. If you want to discuss the events of the war, head over to this thread:

I'm firmly of the belief that, if Putin could see a way out of this war that wasn't personally catastrophic for him, it would already be over.

But he can't.

Russia isn't fighting because it's winning, it's fighting because it's stuck.

This is what happens when you consume propaganda unthinkingly

You understand that Ukraine stockpiles are empty and have been for a while, NATO stockpiles are also gone(at least what they are willing to give)
Nobody is going to let Russia win this. They all know it won't stop at Ukraine and there will be a horde of Russian soldiers streaming over their own borders before they can say "child killing scum".

Damn you're really running the asiatic hordes thing, you know this is nazi propaganda?

It's kinda funny the dual narrative that people keep, where's the cognitive dissonance. Russia is useless, using WW2 tech, throw men into the meat grinder for incremental gains etc vs If we don't stop they'll be in Berlin before you can say clean wehrmacht

It's Russia win or nuclear war, I know what I'd take

A 100m advance looks really big if you have the map scale zoomed all the way in doesn't it?

So much winning.
From Ukrainian prop outlets too

The AFU’s defensive crisis is intensifying in a 100-kilometer arc around Avdiivka. Following the capture of the village of Prohres between Avdiivka and Pokrovsk in late July, Russian forces have targeted the flanks and rear of Ukrainian units, forcing them to abandon positions.

The brewing defensive crisis near Pokrovsk, Toretsk, and Chasiv Yar is compounded by challenges in other areas, particularly in the southern Donbas.

You know they can throw a pile of crappy equipment and poor people at anyone to damage them.

As long as the kids in Moscow are looked after.
Yeh so cognitive dissonance from your previous post. Lets move onto not recruiting rich kids, like idk every army since industrial war was invented

Azov recruitment drive in Europe shut down by antifa, some concerning symbols there I'm sure we'd all agree

"The event is part of a European tour by the Azov brigade, with the aim of meeting ‘fans’ abroad. It is also about recruiting volunteers for the fight in Ukraine and acquiring financiers,"
A more mainstream source spinning it as Zelesky called them back lol

"Whether in Ukraine or abroad, we always comply with all security requirements and this time we are not going to expose our people to any threats either," the Brigade commented.

Nuclear war?

You need to be a comedian tovarisch, not slaving away in the internet research agency.

Reality:

We all know nuclear war isn't going to be the end result here. The greatest threat to Russia right now is to continue the invasion of Ukraine. Were Putin to withdraw from Ukraine completely next week and negotiate in every single way life would improve for all Russians and the sovereignty of Russia wouldn't be jeopardised.

Unfortunately for you, Russia has lost the war. It's all a matter of how many Russians Putin wants to die all for the purpose of his delusions of a new Russian empire.

Dams are collapsing, the rail network is a shambles. Commercial aviation is a bad joke. The average person in Russia is back to USSR era hardships and it's all down to Putin.

Ukranians are fighting for their people, their culture, their language.

For the people of Russia & Putin it's a matter of how much they let Putin destroy the state of Russia before eventually withdrawing then coming to the negotiation table.

That way Putin can worry about Russia and actually restoring the nation to a respectable place in world politics. Instead of having to pursue friendships with Iran & North Korea (how embarrassing for a once great nation).

When did I say it wasn't?

The collapsing Russian dams don't seem to be flooding homes in Moscow.

And not even half the ADF sign on bonus, the nerve eh

https://pay-conditions.defence.gov.au/continuation-bonus
The continuation bonus amount is $50,000.

Obviously different circumstances, Russia is still using volunteer military as compared to Ukraine's press gangs and large scale conscription
Yeah, Sign on bonus and first years pay is over 5 years annual salary in Russia.

So, 400 - 500k Aus dollars. That's what you get first year as an untrained inexperienced grunt in Australia isn't it?

Can only imagine the state of our armed forces if we had to put up 400k signing on bonuses to new recruits just to make up numbers.

Desperation times for Putin & co. Must be running out of ethnic minorities he can send to face front line.

It doesn't really matter what they offer. Almost none of them get their full sign on bonus, or inflated salaries promised.

ummmmmmmm

Ok so what I said, it'll be spun into a win

Winning is losing 1/4 of your territory, indebting yourself for generations, having your most productive people flee or die on the front. Got ya

At least you can admit they are talking up a peace deal, baby steps

Russia has been said to be running out of everything for the last two years, yet the advance continues(slowly)

You understand that Ukraine stockpiles are empty and have been for a while, NATO stockpiles are also gone(at least what they are willing to give)
I note you are still supporting Russia illeagle invasion of Ukraine.

I've made my point multiple times comrade. The only way ukraine 'win', ie retain their lost territory, is if NATO puts boots on the ground and planes in the sky. To do so would risk nuclear war, that's why they aren't doing it, not that complicated
