Europe Backdrop to the war in Ukraine

This is the thread for the geopolitics, history and framework around the Russia-Ukraine conflict. If you want to discuss the events of the war, head over to this thread:

KIIS Executive Director Anton Hrushetskyi noted that the high support for nuclear weapons restoration, even at the risk of Western relations, represents “an emotional manifestation and existential need to obtain reliable security guarantees and finally create conditions when Russia and Russians will not threaten Ukraine and Ukrainians.“

The survey reveals a significant shift from 1994, when KIIS polling showed 50% of Ukrainians favored becoming a nuclear-free state, with only 30% supporting nuclear weapons possession.

Thanks champ

1. Western Ukrainians are most certainly not cossack, regardless they all(including european Russians) fall under eastern slav

2. Which conflict?

Poles pretty salty about the WW2 massacres

3. So 'eternal' enemies can make peace, that's my point
Point 1.
The reason I placed cossacks in brackets is because at the time of the early conflicts Ukraine borders weren’t what they are today.
The Cossack Hetmanate territory consisted of most of central Ukraine and parts of Belarus. “Cossack Hetmanate faced conflict with the Russian Empire over the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries”
The west was under Polish control. “Polish–Russian War of 1792, and the Polish–Russian War (1609–1618):”

Point 2.
Should have said various conflicts since the 1600’s.

Point 3.
Not when russia deny that the Ukrainian people have their own identity.
“the Ukrainian people – like Ukraine itself – do not exist”

Euronews can reveal that official sources linked to the crash investigation said that while nearing Groznyy, the flight’s destination, surviving passengers heard an explosion followed by what looked like shrapnel hitting the plane, and entering the fuselage.

If confirmed, this tragedy would mark a strong resemblance with the 2014 downing of the MH17 airliner by Russian-backed forces, also with a SAM missile.

Speaking at a news conference, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said that it was too soon to speculate on the reasons behind the crash but said that the weather had forced the plane to change from its planned course.
“The information provided to me is that the plane changed its course between Baku and Grozny due to worsening weather conditions and headed to Aktau airport, where it crashed upon landing,” he said

Putin isout of control. He's definitely the moden day Hitler. Got away with murdering on MH17 and has done it again now this time attacking a Azerbaijani aircraft on Russian territory. Only the biggest idiot of all time could possibly believe his war on Ukraine was ever about NATO.

Putin dreams of a new Russian Empire, he is still filthy about the USSR failure. He honestly believes Ukranian people, culture, language & sovereignty isn't a real thing. Someone with a fascist mindset like that simply cannot be negotiated with.

Putin is happy murder as many civilians as he wishes in pursuit of his delusional ideology to make it happen.

He hides in his bunker just like Hitler. The world will be a much better place the sooner him and his USSR era fascist mates are ousted from leadership in Russia.

Russiafication 101. This behaviour is clearly not about NATO. It is all about creating a new Russian empire.

The think tank said it hasn't found any indication yet that Russia plans to attack the Baltics soon. However, the ISW warned that Putin may be laying the groundwork for "future aggressive Russian actions abroad under the pretext of protecting its 'compatriots.'" (sounds familiar)
This is typical for empire builders.

Conduct trade with and migration to the target country, making "protecting our interests and our people" a legitimate reason for invading the target country.

Russia only occupied the Baltics because of the Nazi collaboration deal.

Russia and Ruscism never was welcome in the Baltics.

Thats why the created a human chain of a million plus people in the late USSR era days when Moscow tried to violently suppress freedom there.

Kyiv has tripled its overall domestic weapons production in 2023 and doubled that output in the first eight months of 2024. Ukraine has successfully tested its new Peklo (Hell) drone missiles with a strike range of up to 700 kilometers and a speed of 700 kilometers per hour and modified its A-22 aircraft into a plane drone.
