But then there's no other conclusion to draw from what you said other than that the system is flawed/unfair for the purposes of a collective set of rules that consistently apply to achieve equalisation, and/or the fact that Geelong are engaging in tampering.
The first part is true not the second

There's no other answer to this other than some vague belief that Bailey Smith is morally entitled to smoothlesly get to the club of his desire, despite not being a free agent.

Even though Geelong fans aren't calling for the draft to be abolished. You think they would because human rights and freedom of movement and AFLPA and all that.

For a draft and the subsequent principle of equalisation to have any meaning, a player who is very good, a former top 10 pick and living up to that top 10 pick, should have some difficulty moving to a better club without adequate cost for the aquriting club and compensation for the losing club. Otherwise, what's the point of any club ever successfully drafting and developing talent at all if there's no barriers for that player leaving?

You don't hear Geelong people talking about that.

Keep the player happy, and keep him contracted.

Now that's no guarantee, but it gives you a bit more hand in negotiations.

What are you going to do? Withdraw from the competition?

I always felt the Doggies and 'neutral' fans on here were just trolling Geelong and taking the piss for most of this thread with all the conspiracy nonsense and demands.

But after the last week, I think they might actually be serious.

It works both ways mate. One of the funniest ones so far has been “we’d like to get a better pick than 17, but we just can’t”. 😂

The AFL need this one to go the distance too, it’ll get done.

the reading from the media on Smiths value has been a bit off.

at only 23, hes more than franked his pick 7 value. peak form he was 2 x firsts. knee devalued him a bit but hes worth more than rioli, baker, barrass, houston imo just on age & what hes capable of
I wonder what the media would suggest the Hawks would have to pay if we were in the mix?

I agree with the first one (not the second) the system absolutely is flawed and I've been saying that for years. I'm not sure why you would disagree with that conclusion.

Geelong can’t let him go to the draft.

The dogs have more to lose in that scenario than we do we won't be worrying about that the way they will. That said a deal will get done Wednesday night.

The club has the final say and right now they want Geelong to come up with a better offer. Otherwise he's off and racing to the draft.

The dogs won't let him go to the draft as then they lose him for nothing. It harms them a lot more than it harms Geelong (who will probably get him there anyway such is the flawed system).

His peak form is two outlier finals in 2021, hasn’t come close to sniffing that sort of production since. Houston definitely a better player, agree that Baker is a stiff.

This is a very simple but important point and gets to the crux of how broken the system is. Should a club be allowed to “trade” for a player they can’t “afford”. Surely some value has to be placed on out of contract players who haven’t reached FA. For another thread though as this isn’t unique to Geelong.
They can afford him, they have a first next year. Given Geelongs finals history, the two firsts with a 2nd back is perfectly fair.

Next years draft is supposedly shallow and average. I can see why there’d be little appeal in a future second being thrown in and why Power is busy trying to get up the draft for this year.

Not if Richmond, West Coast, North Melbourne, St Kilda etc etc draft him first :p

That's very unlikely. Most cases in previous history it doesn't. I would love for clubs to start taking players like Smith in the ND against their will to take some power back from the AFLPA but realistically statistics say it rarely happens.

The problem is with this draft being good clubs apart from gc and maybe essendon (who need points) will not want to trade out of the top end of it.
