Had no leverage and clearly smith's team weren't advocating for his old team to get a good deal, as sometimes happens.

How? Players want to go to Geelong. At the moment very few are leaving. And to be fair, pick 17 is right. Never been AA, won one B&F, coming off a knee reconstruction.

The Bulldogs only ever offered Smith a 2 year contract. They were never turning down pick 17 to take a stand over him. I think there’s a small chance they might have actually done it over a B&F like Dunkley that they were matching other clubs contract offers for. But Brisbane were wedged a little there because they had to match bids and couldn’t threaten the national draft and we had a pick before them in the PSD.

Smith was dirty about being stuck at half forward and put that out in the media. A bit petulant and probably an inflated view of his abilities when you look at who was in front of him, but it’s his career. Connors probably also wasn’t inclined to go into bat for us on this one. That 2 year contract offer would have made his life harder. Those two weren’t doing us a single favour here.

His physical condition has never been his issue,

His mental health issues aren't as bad as made out but do impact him and is noticeable when thing aren't going his/teams way

AA is a very big stretch unless its media driven and he has substantially improved his abilities by foot
