I'd say so, feels very unlike Geelong unless we've got word that the cap is going up by a big percentage.

Happened in the NFL the other day, and it's usually is the case after a new CBA agreement.

Seems like it's Hawks/Cats 50-50, and Pies are no chance?

Could also be that a large chunk of that is subject performance based clauses given the knee issue. Who knows.

I think the Pies link was just journos looking at insta

Not sure mate sorry. Was only told the offer is 1.2. Considering Geelong don’t offer huge money, I’d say a mix of both?
Can't remember us ever offering 1.2m as a starting point, it is absolutely un-Geelong like when guys like Blics and Stewy don't even make 1m. Guys take paycuts to join the Cats, not take bigger contracts.
I mean Jez basically started on or around 900k and went up over 1m and that was only recent.

I was shocked when I heard it too as I remember Geelong had some 800k rule. Came from a pretty decent source from within the bulldogs who has spent time with Bailey recently off the field/away from the club.

The rule was more like 1m for a couple of key players only.

The cap in 2025 will be 36% higher than when we wrote those contracts, and so the new maximum we would offer an elite player would be 1.36m I guess.

1.2m scaled down by the 36% to adjust back down to pre-cap expansion sizes that's an 880k contract.

Inflation is killing us at Woollies but it's pumping up Bailey's tires a bit here

I'm uncomfortable with it being 1m+ regardless of who we give up.

There are players you pay that money to, and Bailey isn't one of them. I know we've got acres of cap space, but it feels very un-Geelong.

I get that the guy brings a poster boy element and that sort of thing, but he brings some troubles too.

I'd say there would be reservations supporter wise at all of Geelong, Hawthorn, Collingwood & the Dogs regardless of where he ends up at that figure. It's a lot of money for a player like him.

You cant bank more than 5-10 % of the cap though so we may as well use it on this.

Was that under the old cap? It's an over 40% cap increase between 2022 ($12.5m) and 2025 ($17.7m). Every club will have 2 to 4 players on $1m+ very shortly.

Yes old cap so even pushing over $1m should only be Jez and Stewy.
I like Bailey, he's not worth that. Not when Blics and Danger aren't even getting that.

If i had to pick 2-4 at our club who should be on $1M+ right now it's:

Jez
Stewy
Maybe Blics

Fair. We'll probably have 3 soon (Bont, Naughton, Marra) and potentially English too if he stays.

I wouldn't pay Baz $1m either. Especially with Darcy and Sanders looking so promising so early.

Yep, totally agree with that.
2021 Baz may have been worth that, but coming off a serious knee injury, dips in form and the off field stuff.

Probably not, maybe if he has a contract that scales down instead of up each year.
Or one that has contingencies like meeting a requirement of games/awards/stats.

Hawks in the same boat.
We only really have one player who definitely deserves $1M+ right now in Sicily.

No doubt that a couple of others will be on $1M+ in the immediate future (if they aren't already for cap reasons): Day and Newcombe

Then there are a number of young players who are capable of getting into that bracket, but not there yet:
Lewis
Weddle
C.MacDonald
C.Mackenzie

Cats obviously have their own in this section as well:
Holmes
De Koning
O.Henry
J.Clark

Both clubs will have cash to splash, and I doubt the Dogs will be too picky in terms of trading Baz if he announces he wants to go.

I think it will really come down to where Baz chooses as his first preference.

If Oliver to Geelong is a legitimate rumour then I wonder where that leaves the Cats interest in Baz.

They don’t seem like they are overly keen to purely hit the draft only and rebuild, and if Oliver comes cheap trade wise/is a salary dump - I still think they’ll want both as they desperately need it.

Geelong could very well get both but it would require a LOT of pieces to fall into place.
Cats will have a lot of money to spend in the offseason, Melbourne can always put their foot down on Oliver though.

Baz is OOC so Doggies won't really get much choice.

As a Geelong supporter will getting these 2 really delay the inevitable though ? Yes there is great talent coming through but I wonder if this is like how hawthorn went after Mitchell and Omera?

To get both the price for Oliver would have to be well under his market value, and if so, the dees would have to have a strong motivation to move him on.

The source also only said the cats were keeping tabs on him. Similar to us keeping tabs on Bruhn when we were chasing Hopper

Something stinks re Oliver. Would you when really want him? Comes with a buyers beware tag.

Would 100% be the Geelong equivalent of Hopper & Taranto or Mitchell & O'Meara.

The time isn't right mate.

Didn't say i wanted both lol
I'm hesitant on Smith alone let alone Oliver as you can see for about the previous 5 pages of me constantly saying, "Baz isn't not worth $1M"

I'm big on having guys who are good character players as they are guys who will work hard and put the club first.
Don't care how talented you are if you are willing to **** up your career over something stupid.

Below quote is how i feel about Baz. It's even more so for Oliver who would cost more, is on the hook for huge deals which Cats never give out and he seems more trouble than he's worth.
