Given that the Herald Sun employ Robbo as their chief football writer I'd argue that anybody who thinks anything in that rag is worth reading has rocks in their heads.

And no, I mean Wright:

It was not Robbo's article - it was McGuane and McFarlane.

You don't think McGuane has a good understanding of the game?

Footy experts Glenn McFarlane and Mick McGuane rate every player in the AFL:

Jayden Laverde - 6.0
Aiden Corr - 6.0
Found this ranking also, which also explains why we're both very poor defensively

It’s the AFL’s secret herbs and spices that we need to focus on if BMac decides to leave for a bigger contract.

If we’re crap again this year (big chance) then the AFL will give us some leverage just like they did with your club when you were pus, they gifted you pick 3 for Frawley compensation back in 2014 which was unheard of for a backman until then.

The Ivory Tower wont want us to stay in the bottom 3 forever, so they’ll help us out of the quicksand just like they did the Demons, the Blues, etc.. by overcompensating us for BMac who realistically is probably worth a pick around 12-15.

Frawley was an AA who had played close to 150 games before leaving the Dees. Frawley also the superior player although jury is out on McKay. Lots of potential especially at his size.

McKay has barely clocked 50 games with no accolades to speak of.

I do agree though that the AFL would probably give you a little bit of a push start if he was to walk. There is definitely more merit in Melbourne receiving what they received for Frawley compared to McKay based on current output.

Chip Frawley played 139 games at Melbourne over 8 years and made the AA team in 2010. Again, there's no comparison to Ben McKay. It has nothing to do with being a defender, other clubs would rightfully riot if the AFL gave North pick 2 or 3 for a 70-game defender with no accolades and a checkered injury history.

I would imagine that, should it look as if McKay is off, the league is more likely to announce a reshuffle of the compo system that would allow mid-R1 compensation selections. Ie. pick 11, after the non-finals teams have picked. Just like when salary dumps suddenly became ok when they realised GC couldn't afford Bowes' contract if they were going to re-sign Anderson.

I agree with you they absolutely SHOULD rejig the system to make it fairer, but its the corruptAFL we‘re talking about here.. so I couldn’t see them giving up a mechanism they can easily manipulate like their secret herbs and spices.

If we finish around the bottom again as predicted (and after the vomit Brad Scott gave us via PP‘s last year) I could see them hiding a juicy handout through Ben’s FA, we’ll do a moonwalk and move on.

It’s based on what a club offers. Nothing to do with accolades.

He will get big offers.

Joe played 108 games in 8 years at the Bombers (including AA and a BnF) vs McKay's 52 in 7 years with no accolades so to speak. The 'secret formula' isn't just based on money. If he walks, would imagine he'd get band 2 at best unless he has an amazing year which now seems unlikely due to injury.

He could still play 20 odd games and have 70 odd by years end. I really don’t think games played is much to go off. Daniher barely played the last 3 years with Essendon. When was his AA and BNF? Those accolades don’t mean much if they happened years before the FA bid. It’s also worth noting full backs don’t generally fair too well in these type of awards, which you would think the AFL would calculate in their compensation.

You don’t just keep McKay if you match an offer.

Free Agency has been around for a decade now. Plenty of time to wrap your head around it. No excuse Nutty.

Not what I asked. I asked how FA compensation works. You seem to be all over it. If a club offers him 800k a year, it will 100% get us band 1 compo. It is laughable to think otherwise. We will match anything under that and he ain’t going to enter any draft lol.

You said

“We either keep McKay or get band 1 compo.”

Which is not how it works.

Do you need another decade to figure it out?

He is out of contract. So you can refuse but that does not mean retain. Which you did suggest earlier.

I didn’t suggest that earlier at all. I am reading the room and predicting two certain outcomes. He will leave giving us band 1 compo or we match if it doesn’t guarantee us band 1 compo. We may entertain a trade if it favours us considerably, or else he is faced with the draft or staying put. He will not enter the draft, as he is no chance of getting to where he wants to get to.

Predicting two certain outcomes, but may entertain a third? Huh?
