Criteria does not take into account longevity at all. Even 1 season could qualify. Name your team and the season(s) that player was at their peak performance.

Thoughts?

Hard to argue with any of those selections. But there will be players who have missed out who would have decent cases.

Jarryd Roughead strikes me as unlucky. Kicked 75 goals in the same year that a team mate kicked the ton, and also had another season of 75 goals and a Coleman winning 72 goals.

This looks more like just a best team.

How short can a peak be?

Justin Koschitske’s few games in a row in 2005 where he dominated were the equal of any four games any ruck/forward has played. I’d say they’d be the equal or better of Gawn’s top four games. He was absolutely unstoppable.

Another one that comes to mind is Chad Cornes. There were some times (2004 mostly) when he was playing CHB and running high, almost as a midfielder, and he was completely dominant both offensively and defensively. He was usually taking on a key forward but also getting huge amounts of the ball himself. He was better than what Rance was, just not at that level for as long. He later became virtually a full time mid.

Mark Bolton if peak is contained to only games where he tagged Adam Goodes.

Similarly, Vickery vs Pies in 2014 or so was a sight to behold.

I said to state the season in the OP so I guess one particular full season could be a minimum criteria otherwise it can just turn into individual matches..

I do remember that one game, Vickery kicked 6 against the Pies with 21 disposals and 10 marks, playing as a mobile ruck, baulking opponents running through the centre sqaure, he dominated the ground that day, it really was a blinder.

Had of he been able to do that more than one game of his career we'd have had a player worthy of this illustrious group

Reminds me of a time when North supporters were arguing Majak Daw was the premier tall defender of the competition based on a few games where he took a number of strong contested marks.

I think the list would be more interesting if you chose the best year for each player. Hodge won a NS in 2008 and another in 2014. 2014 he did it as captain. So you could argue the merits of that.

GAJ won more individual awards at GCS but I think he was far more important at Geelong. Teams learned to work him at GCS so that he was less damaging.

Judd the year he won the Brownlow wasnt as good as the year he didnt win.

Etc.

Unpopular opinion but Matthew Lloyd was the most dominant ff of this century

Overall career he is by far the standout this century as a pure full forward.

For this criteria it was another toss up between him and fev.

In the end splitting hairs i thought lloyds best home and away return was 96.32 playing in a dominant team at the end of an era that was still conducive to big bags of goals

Whereas fev’s best was 99.51 playing in a pretty ordinary team in an era where flooding and forward press was at an extreme level.

If you want to see hjust how dominant Lloyd was, check out second place to Lloyd in his Coleman years.. Genuinely streets ahead

Is it just me....or is someone trying to compare Fev with Matty Lloyd?

I mean ones a champ for goodness sakes, Fev's a funny guy but he's no Matty Lloyd.

Fair point i actually could not recall that.

Fev’s 99 goal season was fantastic but worth remembering that in addition to buddy’s ton, there were a stack of players in the 70s (fair gap but still a lot of guys in there and 3 of them - Roughead (being a teammate of Franklin), Bradshaw and Brown were taking goals off each other as the saying goes whereas Fev, as much as it legitimately does make things harder to a degree being double teamed etc, at least did have the luxury of basically having a forward line to himself.

Also remember Gehrig kicked a ton only 3-4 years earlier as well so it wasn’t completely unheard of even though flooding was becoming more and more prevalent

And Neitz only won it in 2002 (with a then record low number) because Lloyd was injured.

Nick Riewoldt has to be in there somewhere, given he won an AFL MVP award playing key position and was widely regarded as the best player in the comp at the time (2004).

Took an AFL record 256 marks, kicked 67 goals (playing true CHF), and finished equal-7th in the Midfielders Medal.

Had a similar quality season in 2009, with Matthew Scarlett having said since that he rated Nick clearly the best player in the comp at that time.

I have Nick in my overall career team. And would be on the podium for this team with tredrea as well.

But for me brown was another level at his best which was short-lived. Injuries really hampered him and he had to change his style and positioning significantly as a result.

Taking 256 marks but only having 100 shots at goal suggests he wasnt "true" CHF. He spent a lot of time on the wing and in defence. Compare to Buddy who took the vast majority of his marks within 60m of goal.

It would be interesting to see how often he was targeted, compared to his forward teammates. And then compare that to other clubs.

The equivalent example of today is Jessie Hogan. Overwhelming number of times he was the target, so it stands to reason that he kicked a lot of goals.
