A funny incident, except the caption writer got the sequence wrong.

Jason Dunstall outpointed Billy Duckworth and took a mark 10m from goal, falling over backwards. Duckworth didn't try to pull up. He just ran over the top of Dunstall and deliberately stepped on him. Dermie came in to protect his teammate and remonstrate with Duckworth.

As they tangled, he planted a kiss on Billy's lips. Duckworth went WTF, half-laughing, smirking. The over-officious umpire blew his whistle and penalised Brereton, denying the Hawks of a certain goal and keeping the scores close as the siren sounded for 3/4 time.

Brereton lost his shit. He got in the ump's face like a baseball manager and called him a white maggot. (Ian Clayton was the Ray Chamberlain of his day.) Realising he'd cost the side a goal, Brereton screamed and swore in frustration and threw punches at an imaginary opponent as the crowd laughed at him.

On his way to Hawthorn's 3/4 time huddle, he ran straight through the Essendon's huddle in show of strength, defiance and stupidity. Luckily, he caught most of them by surprise and shoved his way through to the other side. But he nearly didn't make it out unscathed. Sheedy said to his players: "Don't worry about him.. He's just a mad Irishman…"

From memory, Dunstall was on about 98 goals for the season when this all occurred. He actually missed that sitter (I was sitting behind those goals that day), making Brereton's actions chasing a lost cause and even funnier if you ask me!

is the mighty gees in reference to geelong?
Yep! The first game at VFL park was between Fitzroy and Geelong.

Football Park and VFL park in their early days of construction.

where the pic of him crying on the bench
Hmmm, nahh. I can at least show some respect, and remember what happened.

Young bloke got chosen #1
Young bloke has one of the greatest seasons from a young KPF we've seen a cpl yrs later.
Young bloke wins the AFLPA MVP
Youngster gets installed Brownlow medal favorite.
Youngster gets installed as the youngest ever captain of one of our foundation clubs (??or near youngest ever)
Not a small amount of pressure on him.
Very first game of Rnd 1
Playing the Flag runners up and 3 time premiers.
His parents and local mates in the stand.
Single handedly takes his mob from 3 goals down at half time to 2 goals up.
Gets targetted by a ruckman and crunched. I dont have a problem with that, nor the aftermath. Somebody had to do something.
Snapped collarbone and still wants/hopes that he could somehow stay on the paddock.
More guys come in to make absolutely sure he's assisted off the field.

Could have sat in the rooms with his arm in a sling until he could control his emotions. He goes out, sits in full view of his players on the field, and watches helplessly as they fall behind again.
Emotion gets too much for him but he still stayed there.

One of the truly great quarters of footy to watch this millenia and amazingly tough,..nasty elbows and teeth on the ground stuff, but fast end to end footy.

I dont think a pic of a young guy having a grizzle in front of the world with all that on his shoulders is particularly necessary.
I wont deny though, in the right mood it can be a lot of fun to see it :D

what about some photos with Kim Duthie?

Nick Riewoldt is a modern day champion. Anybody who thinks otherwise without a good, personal reason is either jealous or stupid. Or both.
Go easy.

I just reckon that pic was one of the greatest since 2000... historical footy moment that i didnt really appreciate fully till later. Awesome to watch the previous season...and the press had already put him right up on a pedestal as a god...then crunched half way thru the very first game of the season and out for maybe 2 months.
Monumental meltdown in here too from memory. Dont think the servers were much chop back then. Arguing about what is right and wrong, how far is too far on the field, did he deserve it ?, was he trying to stay on or coming off ? Press went right off.

Remember it as a hellova qtr of footy with spotfires everywhere. Trainer on the field looking for one of the Scott brothers teeth in a pocket. Hamill did it from memory.
Its the look in Michaels eye and the emotion of it all. Fantastic shot i reckon.

Always rumoured the driver was a Collingwood supporter who "hit the wrong pedal" ;)

Yeah that was the rumour for 50yrs apparently. But history has a habit of being rewritten again and again...so often you now hear the truck was driven by a South fan . You just know there are probably collingwood flogs trying to push that new version ;).
Who knows. Doubt there's anyone in here that could be THAT old to confirm it either way :p.

Luv the pic of Pratt on crutches with a ***. Looks about 60yo.

That Saints team just needed one more hard head to stand up. Hamill was great. Needed the (09/10) Hayes or Michael Gardiner to throw their weight around.

Would still be a better opening game to the season than Carlton v Richmond. Bring it back! - only half joking. Was a great rivalry for a short period there.

Not saying its your fault, I mean the bloke who wants the photo of him on the bench or the Duthie hacks.
