Best team of the 21st Century?

We will take their 3-peat then. Interested to hear from Hawks & Lions fans what their "Best of 3-peat" teams would look like. And may as well throw in Geelong for good measure given they win 3 in 5 years.

Geelong failed to defend their premiership on three different occasions. Not really in the same conversation at all really...

Not bad. Hawthorn 1975-1991 wasnt too bad either

1975 - Grand Final (Runners Up)
1976 - Grand Final (Premiers)
1977 - Third
1978 - Grand Final (Premiers)
1979 - Seventh
1980 - Eighth

1982 - Third
1983 - Grand Final (Premiers)
1984 - Grand Final (Runners Up)
1985 - Grand Final (Runners Up)
1986 - Grand Final (Premiers)
1987 - Grand Final (Runners Up)
1988 - Grand Final (Premiers)
1989 - Grand Final (Premiers)
1990 - Sixth
1991 - Grand Final (Premiers)

8 flags in 20 years if you include 1971. The 1982-1994 Hawks hold the record for the most years of successive finals campaigns (13).

If Hawthorn win this year the same club would have won 5 flags in 9 years within 25 years of each other (1983-1991 and 2008-2016)

If anyone ever gets close to this, then this thread would serve a purpose

Home-ground advantage is a significant factor. You've beaten all interstate sides at your homeground, Brisbane beat both Essendon and Collingwood at their home-ground. Unless Hawthorn win again this year then I'd say it'd be neck and neck or brisbane on top due to that factor. I am biased however.
This to me me is a much bigger factor than 4 extra home and away wins over 4 years.

Brisbane the best for mine

If Geelong had of won the 2008 GF, it would be them comfortably. They were that little bit more terrifying, like prime Federer.

Lions were a champion big game side. But when I think back to that period, Port still looms in the memory as a worthy consistent challenger. Whilst you always backed the Lions to get the job done on them when it counted (until the 2004 GF), Port were their equal in H&A and won three straight minor premierships. Even though Sydney have been one of the best sides for five years now, the Hawks haven't had to contend with a perennial Port contender to the crown.

The current Hawthorn team is on their way to being the most accomplished of the 21st century, no doubt about it. Their 2011-2016 record has been stellar, and minus the Geelong curse up until the 2013 PF and Sydney's 2014 H&A form, they have been the standard to beat ever since they went ballistic in mid 2012. Very Djokovic.

We have also gone through a period of dynastic contenders (including the Saints and Magpies in 2009-11), whereas the Lions upended the Bombers, seared in the memory as a force as a refreshing triple premier, brought success somewhere entirely new, had a midfield of Brownlow winners and played tough, fierce football.

Lions has had arguably the greatest list ever assembled from the defence the midfield to the forward line it was loaded with stars. Leigh Matthews probably under achieved with the list he had IMO and I've always said that. Hawks have no where near the star power as the likes of Lions and Cats but have arguably the greatest game plan ever. Cats are in the middle in terms of players and game plans.

Biased but I'd have the Lions then the Hawks closely followed by the Cats.

Geelong a clear 3rd for me. '07 there really wasn't any other decent teams, so kind of won by default. Definitely deserving, easily the best team of the year. And Saints of that decade were terribly soft mentally, so don't rate that one highly either. Collingwood is the premiership I respect the most.

Brisbane were definitely something to fear, had some top end talent that eclipsed almost any list. Essendon was a good scalp, a respected team fresh off a premiership the year before. Collingwood never really stood a chance, good but not premiership material.

Hawks have apparently faced the greatest defensive team of all time, the greatest forward line ever and a game plan that couldn't be bettered.

Hawks for me... As if I'd say anything else.

Hawthorn are still at the top of the ladder....so it's too soon for posters to look at them with true neutrality and observe how good they have been, when so many are still in the throes of wanting to see them fall down the ladder in a screaming heap.

Obey the squiggle god:

Hawthorn 2013-15
15.1% better on average than their top 8 opponents

Brisbane 2001-2003
15.0% better on average than their top 8 opponents

Geelong 2007,2009 & 2011
14.5% better on average than their top 8 opponents, no three-peat.

As squiggle incorporates home ground advantqges into this and you add the Hawk core dominating 2012, a PF in 2011 and flag in 2008, +2016??. Then Hawks easy.

However, if Hawhorn hadn't the wood over Geelong in 2 particular games then consider they could've been Premiers in 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011 & 2013 and this debate wouldn't exist at all.

This really isn't complicated.

1. The aim if the competition is to win the flag
2. Since 2000 Hawks have played in 5 grand finals and won 4
3. No one has matched that.

Shall we move on now

Edit: what was I thinkin

That's ridiculous reasoning. Port were a stronger option then west coast last year and the saints and pies put together two of the strongest seasons in modern times. the Hawks premiership teams weren't as good as those saints and pies teams at their peaks. Hawthorn on the other hand have only beaten interstate teams in their 3 year run and west coast and Freo were very weak gf sides. In the bottom five of the past twenty years along with carlton 99, Melbourne 2001 and pies of 2004. Sydney was a stronger side but choked even worse then port did. Atleast port rocked up for the first twenty minutes.

Hawthorn 2011 - present
1 prelim
1 runners up
3 flags
13 all aust players
always has been top 4
You do realise that geelong achieved exactly the same flags, runners up and prelim finishes in their 5 year run as well. Except instead of 13 all Australians they had 29 as well as a Host of records such as most home ground wins in a row, biggest grand final win, most all Australians in a season, most 150 point wins in a season and a number of others.

There are criteria that you can use that makes the Hawks sound a better team so why come up with criteria that makes them look inferior?

There really is nothing more to it than that. 4 is greater than 3. Everything else is purely subjective, and the debate can go round and around for ever and ever (and has been).

Here's my team I've knocked up in five minutes:

B: Ben Stratton, Brian Lake, Josh Gibson
HB: Shaun Burgoyne, James Frawley, Grant Birchall
C: Bradley Hill, Sam Mitchell, Isaac Smith
HF: Luke Breust, Lance Franklin, Cyril Rioli
F: Paul Puopolo, Jarryd Roughead, Jack Gunston
Foll: David Hale, Luke Hodge, Jordan Lewis
I/C: Liam Shiels, Taylor Duryea, Matthew Suckling, Ben McEvoy

Omitted from the team: Jonathan Simpkin, Matthew Spangher, Will Langford, Ryan Schoenmakers, Brad Sewell, Max Bailey, Brent Guerra
I would have Guera over Duryea any day of the week, but that is some sort of ridiculous team on paper. Would love to see the cats and Lions equivalent. The Lions would be something else I think

It's more to do with the fact that Goo played in only one of the three-peat flags, whereas Duryea has played in two.

Double standards given I've included Franklin, but I personally think (no matter what Jonathan Brown thinks) that Franklin is the best player in the competition, so how could I omit the Big Bopper?

Additionally, Goo has a dead animal on the top of his head, while the Doc's hair is frabjous. That counts in Doc's favour.

I understand your point but the AA debate is not really applicable and a three peat will always eclipse 1 on, 1 off trio of flags, it is just the way it is.

For what it is worth, I think the Hawthorn vs Geelong era we are in (2008 - current) will go down as one of the great rivalries of all-time and has already eclipsed the hawthorn vs Essendon 83 - 86 rivalry from my perspective.

With the AA, Clarko has said to all our players that he wants NO individual brilliance. He does not want to see a Hawthorn player win the Brownlow in his time at the club. By extension of that AA nominations would almost say to him that a particular player is too important to their line and the load needs to be spread. It is a point of focus for Clarkson's game-plan to have no player really excelling but a true team effort, which robs individuals of awards. After all, it is a team sport.

I thought it may have been to do with the flags, unlucky 2012 for Goo as it may have changed the result I feel. All good points but Goo was almost our game changer in big games. Really steady head in defense.

Geelong in 07. Never seen a team so destructive on Grand Final day not to mention an impressive home and away stretch after a slow start. Brisbane of 01 - Similar to Geelong of 07 in that they responded from a slow start and defeated Essendon in their prime.

Hawthorn of 14 / Brisbane of 03 a tie for second.

Hard to split the rest, but those mentioned stand out for me.
