I would change the word 'undoubtedly' to 'arguably'.

Which fits in with our recent tete-a-tete.
His record in all formats is excellent. He's a great of Australian cricket.

Some will argue a Test average of 45 isn't 'excellent' - it certainly is with a strike rate of 70.

He is going to be a huge loss when he retires.

I'm not arguing that he's been very good. My criticism from a performance perspective relates to the Test arena and his performances away from home. They're still pretty good, but he can't be classified as a 'great' if he can't perform overseas.

Exactly, greats score the hard runs under pressure against gun opposition on their home turf.

Davey is a very good cricketer and a scary force at the top of the order but he's never quite been able to build a well rounded legacy, despite being supported and given every opportunity. I think most people were/are rooting for him to succeed and wanted him to convert overseas but sadly didn't happen.

Still remember watching him debut in the T20i v South Africa and carting them to all corners of the park. Was wondering where the hell we'd discovered this bloke.

Also how does warner compete against our 2 biggest rivals England and India ?

Averaging 45 alone is excellent when you're an opener.

Hayden and Slater for Aus also had very different home and away records, and Rohit's is even worse than Davey's so I wonder if there's something in being an attacking opener that makes playing away rom home even harder.

Rohit seemed to play down the order (with inconsistent results) for much of his early Test career though

Warners biggest asset was also his biggest shortcoming. His willingness to play positively/aggressively at the start of an innings often set up the match for us on Day 1 in a lot of instances (yesterday being a prime example). It also meant we were often than not 1 down for not many on tricky pitches.

I do hope they stick with the notion of having one attacking opening batter post Warner.

I'm leaning toward trying Green opening (when Warner retires) and have thought he or Marsh could be good. Just makes more sense to leave Marsh where he is, so if it fails, there is less shuffling of the order. I also think it could be the making of Green and stop him being so tentative (which is what I think holds him back). Understand wanting a more traditional opener too, but apart from Handscomb, I have little faith in the other options. Maybe Renshaw. But the strike rates with Uzzie worry me.
