I’m a big fan of Byrner since he started (up forward) but he needs continuity and nothing wrong with building from the VFL (along with Macreadie, Schumacher, McDaid etc + could be 1 of Plow, LJ, Marchy or Weiters).
If the form warrants it, they get promoted. Also not against Byrne returning to HFF (FP ala Brad Pearce) or the wing.

Brad Pearce could football
3rd season, 50plus goals, 4 in winning gf.

Would do it in a pinch but include a swap of later picks as well ie 1 + 25 +65 + 73 -> pick 3 + 57 + 61 + saints 2019 1st.

Then pursue the following trades
A. jones to GC to move back up for walsh + replace the mid 20s pick - 3 + jones -> 2 + 29
B. pick 24 -> mcgovern
C. Saints future 1st + PP (12ish) + 29 -> shiel + setterfield + 23

Net result
lose pick 1, PP (12), 24, 25, 65, 73, Jones
Gain pick 2, 23, 57, 61, mcgovern, shiel, setterfield

Still get walsh + gain small upgrades for our 3rd and 4th round picks.
C. Is way overs. You could get that deal done with the saints first and 12. No need for 29 too. In fact the salary cap relief could even turn it into saints first and 29 for Shiel setterfield and their 3rd rounder.

They have a few they probably wouldn't mind letting go, Lids, Griffen, Scully and to a lesser extent Patton would all be on very good coin.

They also know if Shiel waits a year all they will get is a pick around 14-18 as compensation, that helps with any deal SOS makes

Finally some sense. GWS know they will only get 14-18 next year and they have a few DFA’s next year (Coniglio, Tomlinson, Buntine, Haynes, etc) and they only get 1 compensation pick based on the Free Agent loss (even if more than 1 leaves). GWS moving early is in their interest not necessarily Shiel or the receiving club.

Compensation based on total loss .. not per player.

Agree C is paying a lot and we could probably get away with paying less. Overall the deal with the saints (the rumour) works for us though

I think this will play a big factor in any dealings.

Taking someone like Griffen or Lids as a salary dump would be a good move for us. Gives us another senior body and experience/example on the training track. Granted both of those guys are injured the majority of the time but they're knowledge on the game will be good for our younguns.

Obviously this only works if it allows us to get Shiel at a semi discounted rate. Eg Shiel and Setterfield for 2019 1st and a second round pick.

We need to keep pick 1 (Walsh) at all costs IMO.
They would keep our new medical department busy as well.

After reading the Crows board about MM, most of their supporters are looking at the trade deals from the wrong angle. There's an assumption that SOS needs to make the deal now but he's proven time and time again that he walks from deals that aren't fair. SOS has a job description of building the best possible list for Carlton so he doesn't have to care about wins and loses, Adelaide do.

If one party in the negotiation is on a significantly different outcome goal there will always be disparity in the discussions. Adelaide need to make their list better right now whereas Carlton can wait until the deal is right. Adelaide will want two picks in top 5 2018 (Luko/Rankine) with a third pick in 15-20 bracket (Hately/Valente). To pull this off they need Carlton and GC to do massive favours but Crows have the picks/players to do it, they just can't be dicks about it.

The issues with the pre-season camp mean the Crows board are in the firing line, bringing in three gun SA players could just about give them 12 months of breathing space #WithCollectiveMindsWeCryAsOne

Agree.

And relative timing is an issue.

SOS won't really care if he gets MM this year, next year or the year after.

There are a group of gun SA boys in this year's draft (not next year's).

Crows need to get the deal done so they get picks this year.

The timing pressure is all on the Crows - not SOS.

SOS can afford to be patient - the Crows can't.

Now why would we want Jones gone. Turned into a defender against the odds and he stars for 10 weeks last year.
This year he has no choice but to run ragged trying to cover all the holes and actually still played some terrific games till the injury. Such short memories.
Pagan once said you need a gorilla to play on the gorillas. He was right and Jones is it. A gorilla and a gazelle in the one package. When his teammates come back he will star again.
He is the only trade-able commodity that we can cover and hence prepared to loose. You comments are very valid and I can see Jones improving with the return of DOC and his guidance in the back line. Don't Laugh but I liken Jones to Rance (70% of Rance). He may have even been given instruction to model his game on Rance's. Problem is Rance has capable support with solid back line players that can hold their man or peel off when the situation allows.

In trying to play a similar role when eh didn't kill the ball his back up was not there the opposition would then pick up the loose ball and go through his opponent. Where he was lacking is once this happened a few times he should of changed his tact and gone man on man.

Question is will he still be an integral part of our team when we hit our straps in a couple of years, or do we take what we can now?
