Speak for yourself; I'm pumped, at a minimum we're going to enter the new season with Setterfield (SOS rated him number one in 2016), Walsh (according to EP Geelong are absolutely crazy for him), McGovern (perfect complement to Charlie and Harry) and Fasolo (Wright replacement). Add to that a fully fit Docherty and Williamson. We've got two new captains which will have a massive impact in my opinion, and a new fitness boss who's a proven elite performer.

Shiel is a very good player, but he's not even in the top 4 midfielders at his club. If he committed to us I fear we would have eventually been forced into giving up pick 1, which I think would have been a disaster. Retaining next year's first means that we'll be major players in the race for Josh Kelly next year which fits the timing of our run better and he's also a much better player.

The truth is we don't need a Shiel type this year, we just need time. If you're desperate for wins in 2019, you'll probably be disappointed. We'll be a lot better than this year though, and it's going to start becoming obvious to all that we have a dynasty brewing.

Marchbank Macreadie Pickett
Docherty Weitering Williamson

Fisher SPS LOB
TDK Cripps Dow

Kennedy McKay Walsh
Murphy Curnow McGovern

Setterfield Plowman Ed Cuningham
Cool

Does that apply if we give up our 2nd next year for WS?
Well, I'm disapponted that we didn't get Shield.
After all the effort by SOS. But I think we may have dodged a bullet. Shield and GWS have played us along for 10 days when they should have rejected our offer long before. Andy Maher said he was told 3 weeks before from someone high up in the Essondon camp that he would be picked up by them.
So good luck to him. We can get Walsh, Setterfield, McGovern, plus anyone one of the other picks we have left, retain our first pick next year, and go all out for Josh Kelly next year.
No offense to you or GWS ….. But a 20 yo bloke that has been injured for the better part of 3 years (2 years in the AFL system), to date and had a sum total of TWO AFL games in that time …….. A first rounder?

Really?
Andy Maher on SEN interviwed one of Setterfields coaches from Sandy, and he said that his injuries were results from collisions. When he returns to full fitness then he will be the steal of the draft. At least the club is not paying out a million dollars plus for Shield who had no intention of playing for us. Maher said he was told weeks ago by a high up at Ess. that he would be theirs. We still have picks left. Hell, McGovern, Walsh, and Setterfield, plus any other picks and the fitness bloke is great. We have our first pick for next year, which we don't have to use on Kelly, plus plenty of cash left. Very happy. Go Blues!

I heard an interview this morning with Andy Maher talking to Ryan O'Connor, who is the talent manager with the Sandringham Dragons. He was saying that Will Setterfield and Tim Taranto were the two absolute standouts in their midfield a few years back before they got drafted.

He's got no doubt that he will be able to get his body right...the rest of course is up to him.

Regardless of the impending Shiel outcome this morning, it made me feel pretty warm and fuzzy. With Walsh, we'll be adding two young talented midfielders onto our list in 2019.

Exciting times ahead, we just gotta be patient :thumbsu::thumbsu:

2019 will see a lot of improvement. 2020 is when we start pushing for finals :thumbsu:

I can’t wait until this place dead set explodes when we trade pick 1 to Adelaide!
Will be awesome to watch, I still think we are a big chance to trade 1, Adelaide will have the currency to trade 7 & something to St Kilda who have ****all picks, they then trade 3 & something to us for 1.
As long as SOS knows the GC isn’t taking walsh at 2 or 3 then it’s money for old rope, we still get Walsh but get a kicker thrown in :)

GC would be all over Walsh

Game plan too complicated ??
Well knock me out with a feather!
For those who were having a go at me a few weeks back for stating Bolts thinks he knows it all (I.e. too smart for his own good) this is what I was referring to.

Hopefully with the review, the appointment of russell to get the boys into shape and more say from the assistant coaches we won’t look out of position and unfit for much longer. Players confused is obvious! No doubt Bolts was trying to reinvent the wheel and the board was sold off the PowerPoint presentation. Now that it’s been found out he’ll need to simplify things and implement it. Lots of work to do for the green shoots master!
Explain how Bolts got the job ahead of you ??????...just curious seeing as you know more than him but he knows it all

I like the way you think :thumbsu:

I wonder what SOS would say reading some of the responses today:

Son, we live in a trade world that has salary caps and constraints, that need to be managed by men with guts. Who's gonna do it? You? You? I have a greater responsibility than you could possibly fathom. You weep for Shiel and you curse paying overs. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know; that not getting Shiel while disappointing, probably saved us cap for another player. And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, will save Carlton. You don't want the truth because deep down in places you don't talk about it at parties, you want me in that trade room. You need me in that trade room. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of trades that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it! I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way, Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a laptop and send a post. Either way, I don't give a *damn* what you think you are entitled to!

It isn't what they would give us it is what giving both of them for 1 player now forces us to do to land setterfield.

We are going to end up limiting our trade capabilities next year by trading either our 1st or 2nd round pick next year for setterfield because of using both 2nd rounders on MM, god forbid we finish last next year and only have pick 1, 37 to our name essentially forcing us to trade pick 1 to bring anyone in.

Which is a possibility mate, no doubt. But there are too many variables at this stage to draw a conclusion.

For all we know, we could trade back into the second round this year, or next if we use the future second rounder on Setterfield.

All I’m saying is we need to look at the ins and outs as a complete picture, and then rate the outcome.

26+28+McAdam for McGovern + Crows 2019 3rd (lets say pick 48)

That is way overs??? If 26+28 gets us 13 from Swans lets say in another swap why are we ALSO giving up McAdam?

Let's just keep McAdam in that case - am I missing something?

I have full faith in SOS but at the moment his use of the state league priority seems next to worthless - we're just helping other clubs guarantee talent they want without having to draft for it!

Explains why Jones, Weiters, Plowman, SPS etc looked either like chooks with their heads chopped off or so hesitant at times, they didn’t know what they were meant to be doing when.

Who is strategic coach isn’t it Barker?

My old man and I were legit bagging out Shiel for his wonky disposal during the finals, so there's that :$
You mean the person formerly known as Dylan?
He now uses a symbol. It's hard to make out...looks a bit like a sy...
Oh never mind.:innocent::flashlight:

Time to look into what we will have from the last six drafts come 2019 once we finalise these trades:

2013 draft - #13 (Cripps)
2014 draft - #4 (Pickett) + #6 (Marchbank)
2015 draft - #1 (Weitering) + #10 (McKay) + #12 (Charlie) + #13 Kennedy + #23 (Cuningham)
2016 draft - #5 (Setterfield) + #6 (Petrevski-Seton) + #25 (Fisher)
2017 draft - #3 (Dow) + #10 (O'Brien) + #30 (DeKonning)
2018 draft - #1 (Walsh?)

Two top 10 picks from 4 of those 6 drafts. The picks outside top 10 have been excellent so far (maybe minus Cuningham who I still think has potential)

With the Shiel deal not happening, we have 2 potential top 5 picks (2019 1st + 2020 1st) and a LOT of cash to offer up for Kelly next year.

Some other out of contract, potential (cheaper) targets:

Taylor Adams
Jacob Hopper
Stephen Coniglio
Marcus Bontempelli

But with that sort of currency we could still go after:

Matt Crouch
Lachie Whitfield
Luke Shuey
Luke Parker

etc.

Just feel there's definitely going to be a big name or two that we target and get next year.

Wasn't Barks the head of performance and something else? Basically the job Russell was just poached for???
