What made them such a great side? They had a lot of good players but beside their 08 grand final, the rest they didn’t have a Brownlow medalist, whilst Brisbane had 3, my point being, that the side wasn’t blessed with the same elite talent as others, they just seemed to get the absolute best out of each other, were always in the game and could score quickly.

A lot of that is down to the coach and coaching team.

See above

Hard to fault that lineup from 2013-2015

His record over the last 2 years with a lesser side would add some balance to the claim of greatest coach of the modern area

I would say the opposite, that side has no right to be where they are currently and last year, it is filled mostly with old players and kids taken at the back end of the draft, yet they will probably just miss the finals.

I expected them to take a dive and when it seems about to happen they come out and win a few they shouldn’t,

All supporters are true supporters Soapy. Different personalities but supporters nonetheless.
The reason some may post less may have more to do with being ridiculed for not having an opinion that aligns with the consensus.
This can be a difficult river to navigate for some.......and from what I see, the post counts here aren't going down. They're flying.

Rhetorical Q: Anyway, if you're right and Papley is a miss, what makes for plan B & C?
We can't go through this trade/draft period without finding some dangerous forwards.

I disagree, last 2 years states otherwise

Don’t you suggest that the biggest part of a successful side is the list? Or is that someone else.

If it’s the list, then what does the last 2 years have to do with assessing if Clarkson is the greatest coach of all time?

Wouldn’t you simply just compare where his sides finish relative to their list potential or expected position? If that was the case, I’d say his last two season have only enhanced his reputation, but maybe I was just to eager to see them fall that I didn’t give the list enough credit.

One of my regrets not getting to see the Buzz play live.

I've seen premierships, seen Kouta's last Q in 99 prelim, seen Dominator's 7 against the Pies in Rd 1, seen us beat Freo on the knocker without Cripps in Freo this year etc etc etc......

......but the most excited i've ever been as a Carlton supporter was walking out after the game talkin to the ol man and brothers after watching Buzz and Kenny debut.

Eggie Betts has at least one if not two years of good footy left, he’s an absolute gun in a position we are bereft in AND we do need someone that can mentor our young indigenous talent.
I’m comfortable getting Eddie for a year or two as long as we also draft forward pocket/HFF types in this years draft, I’m thinking a Mal Rosa (he’s a second cousin once removed of mine so I’m biased) to mentor and a good chance to be there late second early third round.

As a player, Eddie Betts is only worth $50K/year until he retires.

Coincidentally.....whenever he retires, he is worth $1M as a mentor the year after ;)

Betts is media rumours. Not even being considered
Papley highly unlikely. Swans won't let him go.
Coniglio hasn't made decision but club confident
Many other names in the mix not even being discussed
Teague to be announced very soon

Good calls on all points. Closest to the pin surely.

I have watched him quite a lot over the years, there have been times when he does drop his bundle and doesn't actually bother to do any kind of chasing or tackling.

Probably should have been dropped more times last year too, but the Suns haven't got the depth/enough good players in their list.

For what the Suns would want for him in a trade, I don't think is worth it. I stand by my belief that he is a conditional footballer 100 %, I have watched most games of footy in the past 4-5 years on Foxtel, and I firmly believe what I wrote about Martin is accurate.

By way of rebuttal - and in the interests of honest discussion given you appear to be someone who has actually seen Martin play a bit:

- The culture at GC hasn't exactly been conducive to hyper-competitive individuals. They're outliers up there, surrounded by ordinary footballers on inflated paychecks who know their desperate club will keep them on as long as they do "just enough". I've seen Martin throw himself at contests he has no business being in with his frame, and he's suffered injuries as a result. Yep, I've seen him drop his head before - along with their entire squad. I don't think he's the cause of their cultural issues though, which is why I'm keen to get a player of his calibre into Carlton - he has a skill set that would improve us significantly, and I think playing alongside guys like Cripps, Doch, Curnow x2, Walsh, Jones, Silvagni, Kreuzer, Thomas, Setterfield etc. will bring out the best in him.

- When clubs aren't happy with a players competitive spirit, they find ways to drop them regardless of depth. Best I can tell, Martin has been "dropped" twice in the last 4 years, and at least one of them may well have been injury-related.

- I find it baffling the way his trade cost comes up as a point against him. Nobody knows what GC can/will ask. Martin is out of contract, and his value is probably in the last first/early second round range. Maybe that's "overs", but we're at a point now where paying slight overs isn't an issue. Future second, or use Adelaide's first and get something good back (ie. Brisbane's first). We've also got developing youth who can't get games who could well be included - nothing lost be tossing one of them in the mix for a best 22 player.

- From a cash perspective - reports keep bobbing up about how he wanted $800k last year. Firstly - he didn't get it. Suspect that might make for a reevaluation this year. Secondly - negotiations always start high from the seller. He/his manager will say $800k, we'll say $450k, it'll land somewhere below $600k with some performance clauses. Front load it a bit and by the time he's entrenched in the side he's earning the same as anyone else, no more. That's why we've banked cash, to give us room to pad out some acquisition contracts.

I'll bite, and say that if his cost is $800k per year for 5 years, and a high-ish first round pick, I'd rather look elsewhere. I also have no doubt that it'll take a whole lot less on both counts, and represents an opportunity for an amazing bargain in the realm of Will Setterfield.

Thing is, his pedigree and reputation are still very high. There's no way we'll get him "on the cheap".

Round 1, 1981 v Richmond at VFL park. I don't recall the Buzz in that game, but have distinct memories of a wiry Hunter floating in front of packs across half back taking what seemed to be effortless marks (even if he sometimes got crunched). Amazing to be able to add that kind of talent to an already star-studded team.

Outside of Norm Smith, can you name me a coach who has had as much success in a short period of time?

Four flags in seven years. Four top four finishes outside of that in the past ten years.

Even with a depleted list, he's still got them within finals contention this year.
