A simple solution to address this would be to force a club that takes a free agent from a bottom 4 club to pay for the compensation pick via their own draft points, rather than getting a free hit from the league which moves every one back in the draft.
Would make far more sense, if I understood correctly. I.e Richmond have to pay the compensation pick to Gold Coast for Lynch rather than the AFL. Seems like a fairly transparent solution, however the AFL is great at making clear things a complicated blurry mess, just look at the rule changes...

Give the bottom 4 club compo plus the top teams pick. Ie. Richmond should of had to pony up their 1st pick as well for lynch.

If North are the other team who’s chasing Papley strongly and they’re willing to give their first pick (currently 5 and getting something back in return) then they would be in the drivers seat provided Papley is also open to moving to them. We really need Papley to insist on coming to us and then the Swans will be forced to trade with us or keep a player who wants to leave (for family reasons).
