It is mostly pointless bringing in additional youth, but that does depend on the youth.
Surely we wouldn't say no to a Connor Rozee should one be available in the draft. Rankine? TThomas?

Wouldn't want an 18 year old mid that would take time to develop and then to only have to fight for a position over other mids we already have.
Goal-kickers though? We have a couple of vacant positions and opportunity can be a wonderful thing.

Point is that should be not find what we want regardless of how we use the pick #8, we shouldn't blow it just because we have to change tack.

The pick swap worked out nicely - not only do we have a near perfect pick to trade, we have a perfect pick to grab the best small forward in the draft.

I think we will bring in an 18 year old mid, along with other mature players

With the #8? Maybe, but it seems somewhat pointless to me, unless of course we're faced with no other course of action.

Much sooner be getting into Caldwells ear about coming to us in 2020 and using this years pick for needs.
Now that's easier said than done and if nothing suitable presents, firstly by way of trade and then by way of draft, we take the best player available and that may well be a mid.....but it's just not ideal

Wonder if Martin would be like Hall, I would have been happy to get Hall last year but got dropped a number of times at North Melbourne.

All the talent in the world but does he have the AFL work ethic.......so far has been underwhelming but is that due to being at the GC or someone who got picked high on natural talent etc?

🖖 | WALLSY: 'WELL, MY WORK IS DONE HERE'

Robert Walls will finish his stint as a coaching mentor at Carlton this year after being hailed for his work with the Blues' battery of 10 assistant coaches, @RalphyHeraldSun reports: bit.ly/2L41cBo

Can't get throught the paywall but do we have a senior mentor in mind for Teague?

Coming into this off-season I was of the view we wouldn't exit it with either this year's or next year's first-rounders.

I still think we might go big-time shopping in the Wines, B Crouch sort of neck of the woods.

* PS - not for Talia, though. As good as he is (very good), he plays in a position where we are stacked.

McCreadie/Marchbank/Williamson are continually injured and their development has been severely hampered because of same. There also no guarantees that Docherty will come back and stay on the park ( sad but true). Whilst Casboult has shown that he can pinch hit as a defender his greatest utility is as a second ruck who can fill in as a forward or a back - depth - much as I like Levi I am also aware of his limitations and age.

For all the criticism of Plowman - he has probably been the most dependable defender covering third talls as well as mid and smaller forwards with good effect. Weitering hasn't performed at elite levels (yet). Simpson has been invaluable - but at his age there are more questions than answers going forward. Jones is excellent at taking marks and has strong closing speed to match a large frame- but his kicking is suspect under any pressure and his positional sense is too often found wanting.

If Talia wants to play at Carlton - there is (in my mind) sound rationale to get him on board and raise the base level of performance up a notch and cover for the players who don't ever seem to be able to get on the paddock and stay there.

Talia/Weitering Jones as the three talls would be a finals quality brigade down back - much more solid than what is on the field in 2019. every goal stopped is two goals that dont have to be kicked.

I haven’t been here long enough to know. Is it the same posters that attacked me attacking others? Or different attack dogs each time?

All sorts, but I’d like to point out that it takes two to tango....pretty hard to have an argument and derail a thread if arguing with yourself!!

Why wouldn't we need an AA defender in his prime that has a good injury history?
Current Tall defensive options:

Jones
Weiters
Plowman
Marchbank
Macreadie
Levi
Goddard

At a pinch:

Gov
JSOS

Mature midfielders who can be relied on to get it at least 25 times a game and break a tackle:

Crippa
Ed (30 soon)
Murphy (+30)
Setters (based on promise in 2019 when fitness suss and lacking match play)
Walsh (not mature, but he’s a freak)

Jury still out on Dow, Fish, SPS, Kennedy, Cuners - plenty of potential but either light, fragile bodies or not consistent.

“Classy” small forwards

??

Hands up if you still think we need another KPD or another gun mature mid and classy forward?

Papley and Martin please! 🙏🏼

If anyone is peddling not drafting anymore youngster I would agree it is just as much rubbish as this off-season not trading our best currency to get an established quality player and in particular a goal kicking small in front half. No , it does not have to be Papley but we know he is keen to get back to Melbourne due to his other half career here. It makes sense to target him as he is exactly type we need both in age profile, readiness to have impact straight away and area on field we lack quality. No brainer we not ignore this. No need to be desperate. Just find a way of a trade we can do with Sydney that helps us, Papley and Swans come away all happy with a win win deal. Personally I do not see it happening as pick 8 is around his mark imo, and if Swans asking for more than just a fringe player thrown in, I see us walking. That is also part of our list strategy to do things sensibly.

We both agree on to continue to draft youngsters but unlike last four off seasons we do not have to invest heavily this off season. We done that in that period. This off season we need established players more and why pick 8 is very much on table. The 2nd or 3rd round of draft we will continue to draft a youngster or two, but we can afford to not be concerned if we skip the pointy end of this draft to trade pick 8 for something of more immediate value to our list.

At moment our number one target is Papley. That is not tunnel vision. That just seeing someone that fits our needs and we know is likely to leave Swans at some point anyway. If we can get him early for reasonable price, we will do it. If not we look for next best target for our needs.

One of the alternatives is to trade down pick 8 for something like 15 and 30(not sure if 30 makes it equivalent).

Then at draft look at Cody weightman at pick 15(l think he’s meant to be late first round). I believe this type of player can make an impact in his first year or two. (But note, l haven’t seen much of him, read about mostly.)

You can still look at another small/medium forward with 30 who might be more speculative and take a little longer.

It might be a reasonable alternative that can have a positive impact on Carlton’s performances without having to wait years. There is some risk though.

Ps. I’m no expert on this draft.

If he was uncontracted, I would be all for it as we wouldn't have to overpay. But as it stands, I believe he has a few more years on his current deal, and Adelaide certainly aren't going to sell low.

Do we give up a first round pick for a 28 year old key defender? Absolutely ****ing not.

I tell you who was contracted? Bryce Gibbs.

And it took Adelaide two goes to get it done.
And they paid through the nose.
And it didn't deliver them anywhere near what they paid.

Sure, players can leave under contract, but it's a sellers' market...

Well if we cannot get one of our prime targets like Papley and our next best is not worth giving up pick 8 and we see closer to late first round, it is one thing I am sure would look at. But at moment we fully expect the player we find as best target will need better than pick 15 to trade to get.
Pick 8 is ideal for the type of trade we looking towards.

Current Tall defensive options:

Jones
Weiters
Plowman
Marchbank
Macreadie
Levi
Goddard

Option doesn't mean quality. Might as well label it as "has a pulse".

Out of that lot I'd consider Jones, Weitering and Plowman as the reliable defensive options.

Marchbank is injured far too often.

Macreadie has done nothing much so can't be relied upon.

Levi is a capable switch hitter.

Goddard yet to be determined.

Plowman shouldn't be tasked with defending physically bigger defenders so often. Should get the medium forward player each week.

If you bring in a Talia quality player you can release Weitering to the role he excelled at before he was drafted. A defender who has the potential to be Jeremy McGovern like with interceptions.

Not saying we should get a Talia, just that our defence would be all the better for it and we perhaps could create some assets from trading a Marchbank like player.

If
If we walked away from trade week with Jack Martin and Zac Jones I'd be wrapped.

Hard running defender who can carry the ball.

Small smart forward.
If we add Wines to that
I'd be super rapted. (Or Hopper) (or if AMT then just two will do) :D :thumbsu::screamcat:

It's now up to Russell to ensure we keep these players on the park and for Teague to develop Macreadie, BSilvagni etc.
Talia's rating has also dropped off in recent times. Maybe that's just an 'Adelaide' thing. Who knows?

Whichever way though, a 28 year old KPD isn't anywhere near the top of our shopping list. Not sure why we'd even be discussing him, even if he wanted to come to us as there's no immediate need.

Concentrate SOS...Concentrate :)

After two wins last year we landed McGovern, Newman and Setterfield. With 7 wins this year, big money in the bank and first round picks openly up for trade, it's hard to see how we aren't big players during the off season.
Yes! Just realised after a coupla days hurting, am well over Rabbit. The future looks glaringly bright again. Seeing our beloved Captain on stage last nite may have helped a fair bit. He is just FABULOUS!

Te
Most likely you’d go Talia/Jones as key defenders.

Weitering gets pushed to 3rd tall.

Marchy can play defensive wing so maybe it’s Plowman who would miss out, but I don’t think Weitering can cover the range of footballers Plow can.

For what we’d have to give up...definitely not worth it.

The way I see it. If A graders WANT to play for you, you try your best to make it happen. Then down the track if you have excess, you have currency.

Anyone remember Weitering playing forward very early on ? Gun. 😁
