Dow's shown enough to attract a reasonably decent pick for him from a team that needs an inside mid. But I think we'll do our best to get him to the club he wants to get to, rather than try to sell him to the highest bidder. Not expecting much for him, which is a pity. And I don't begrudge him if it's true he wants to leave. I would too. No-one's fault we're stacked with inside mids. I wouldn't want to spend half my career in the VFL or on the sub bench. If he actually chose to stay, on reasonable money, and was happy to spend the next 3 years as an understudy to stay with the blues instead of playing regular AFL at another club, they'd want to build a statue of him at Princes Park. That would be outrageous loyalty.

3rd round, if he’s not picked best 22 that’s what he’s worth.
If we wanted more, there was ample opportunity to play him earlier and show his value- he hasn’t just learnt to play the game in the last 3weeks.
Which begs the question, is that in effect 'giving him away' in this year's draft or can we do something with it?

Cat-B rookies are a free hit. They are outside the list so it's great if it comes off but no risk if it doesn't.

I agree. Interesting that the article in the Age today stated that both players will accept two-year category B rookie contracts.

We already have big Dom as a Cat B, so not sure how that works. Also the AFL website states that Clubs can list one Irish player as a Category B rookie but for each additional Irish player rookie listed, that player will be deemed to be a Category A rookie.

Maybe the rules have changed....which of course is totally unlike the AFL to change rules on the run.

More likely that McGowan made a mistake

IMO will be a monster draft steal & pretty much free to a good home. We got Acres for a 3rd & that was an absolute steal, unlikely to happen again.
But that’s what happens, u can’t not play someone, have them show so form, subsequently tell them they aren’t best 22, then expect a good return on the pick, just doesn’t happen like that.

Who does he displace in the backline? I would hope that the back six of Weiters, Kemp, Saad, Doc, Cincotta ans McGovern/Marchbank would become even more settled next year. Then you have Newman, Boyd and others who may also be ahead of.Zac..

I think there's a genuine opportunity to play as Williams as a defensive forward next year who could hit the scoreboard as well. Perhaps he becomes a smaller utility type and a genuine Mr. Fix it
Easy to forget how good Zac's best was. I just don't know if he can get back to it. If he can, he'll slot straight in. Too much of a weapon not to play him.

Okay then; what is your 'made up' opinion regarding what we'd get for Dow in a trade if he didn't re-sign with us?
No idea until we see who is interested and how interested. It won't be nothing.

Best of luck to him if that's how it pans out.
He's stuck with us for a while without getting regular games, and with a healthy midfield, that probably continues.
Can't begrudge him wanting more opportunities after this long, if none are guaranteed (or even vaguely possible).
Will be a shame to lose him from a purely selfish perspective, as he's great in the VFL side and very handy depth, but he can't hang around forever, hoping for more chances.
Then again, for 550k, I would too.

Need to go back all of one year to see that premiership sides sometimes have a year of consolidation.

Geelong won the flag in 2022. Only "notable" player movement for them coming into that season was swapping Fort for Ceglar (who then played 3 games), and picking up Stengle as a DFA.

Their draft haul was Conway (24), Knevitt (25), Willis (32), Kroeger (48) and Whyte (64).

It was essentially just one DFA free hit (which, to be fair, they nailed).

No evidence to suggest that we stagnate by having one off-season where we focus on nailing one or two draft picks, maybe taking a cheap free agent, and bringing in some Irish prospects. Our list is younger than Geelong's was, and has more scope for natural growth across the board.

I haven’t read ahead but you are missing an important piece here. The Cats added an AA small forward to their side via a DFA, it was a huge factor in their success. They added an experienced, talented player who had previous issues.

I'd heard that Dom signed a one year extension. So maybe he goes on the main list?

I doubt it mate.....the good ones to my mind just drop and run.....they don't debate

and there arent many leaks these days
They don't debate, they just leave because posters like you cane them whenever one of their rumours doesn't play out.

The list of really good posters who have left completely, or dramatically decreased their posting, is long.

Great hope your right and history shows us he has wanted to stay.

Still my info it's unlikely
Pretty disappointing that what you find out isn’t 100% written in stone- especially when the player is probably still torn on the decision & seeing how the season plays out 😂
The very vast majority really appreciate the info u get & u passing it on - thank you

If this is a view held by the club, then Zac should be moved on as a priority. His wage is speculated anywhere from $800,000 to $900,000, if he isn’t considered best 18 or even 22, move him on.

Zac Williams is in our best 22 every day of the week. You don't just replace quality and talent. Who remembers the Martin discussion before he returned?
