Would love the club to come out asap and distance themselves with this news.

Just say Harry or anyone else is not up for trade
Could not happen quick enough. They need to pour cold water on this ASAP. 2 more weeks of this isn't going to help our finals campaign either way.

I think it would be a disaster to even raise the thought of trading one of our guns to get another in.
It defeats the purpose. If Petracca wants us, then offer 2 first round picks and be done with it. Not worth more - remember the Judd trade????
Ambit claim would be this years 1st and next years 2nd for Petracca and their 2nd next year…

Blokes 29 not 24 and heading into his prime.

Of course we need to make the salary work, but none of us know what wiggle room their might be…

Trade capital required would be significant but maybe not as hefty as everyone suggests.

If the relationship with the club is really damaged… something like this years 1st and some pick shuffling (the magnitude of which may be determined by his contract and the extent to which the cost to the incoming club is defrayed) might just get it done…
I am all for Petracca in Navy Blue but just not at the expense of Harry.

I would do a Cerra / Martin + Motlop for example and picks but we cannot be trading Harry / Charlie or TDK.

Campo boys coming in and Walkers boy the year after have our mids looking good future wise.

I don't think we'll trade Harry or Charlie.

But I do think that Melbourne want a key forward, and if there was one from another club, and we could unlock that in some way, it could work.

Trade periods always about your overall outcome, not specific trades

Listen carefullyvto Sam McClure speak and none of it is ever stated as fact or something he has heard verbatim, but rather gaps in a story which he has filled with his own narrative.

"It's my belief"
"As I sit here tonight"

Or my favourite is when he states something to then immediately say "I'm not saying that it will necessarily happen but i think it might"... I.e. "I'm going to cover myself for the completely fabricated story I just told"
It's classic gutter journalism that is so prevalent in the AFL we don't even notice it the majority of the time.

They hate being called out as wrong so they use language very cleverly to give themselves an out.

They also have to fill so much air time they are almost forced to go with it at times.

Personally I don't think club needs to say anything publicly, as long as internal messaging is good and players know where they stand. Then they can troll the media...

It's the salary cap that's the issue. I agree that we could get Trac in for some picks without needing to trade out H, but I don't think we could fit him in salary cap wise, without removing someone relatively noteworthy from the list. Unless he would take a pay cut but the only way to do that would be to give him the same money but over more years and he's already contracted until 34.

We are not 1 player away from a premiership. Petracca will be like a 2 to 3 season sugar hit and we are setting ourselves up to fall off a cliff. It really smells like old Carlton. A good Key Back will have as much influence at less price than Petracca. Our weakness is not in the midfield. If he was 24, I might do it. He is 29 next year

Okay, so as Cripps is older than Petracca, do we have 1-2 years to win a flag with him? As McKay is two years younger than Petracca, he has 4-5 years left to win a flag, but he's not going to do it in the next 3 seasons so it is a 2028/29 window for Harry before we have to start again. Same for Curnow and Weitering.

Are we starting a rebuild? Should we prepare for that?

I don't know, it feels like people have a different outcome for outside players than they do for those already at the club. Our guys have a massive window, but anyone we bring in is almost finished.

Our weakness is very much in the midfield. All of our players are same-ish workhorses. Half of them won't be there by the time a new draftee is ready to add something to the mix. Midfield affects all areas of the ground and midfield makes every area look better or worse.

He’s #1 ranked in the league for goals from D50 transition.

Kicking skills open up the ground by hitting angles on the transition.

Dual AA. Exactly what we need.

Watching last night's game I thought they'd struggle a lot more without him than what they did. Freo have the type of midfield that they'll be facing in the finals too - especially the two Sydney teams.

Not doubting his ability whatsoever but just surprised at how quickly they adjusted to his absence.

This is the reason we do this right ... to chase a flag?

I don't want to rob Cripps of an opportunity to win a flag. He's a generational player and he deserves us to go full throated at a flag, not hold something back in case we fail and bottom out again. He stayed loyal to us and kills himself week in, week out.

I'd rather try and fail than never try at all.
OK to take my emotion out of it, I'd still not do that deal.

Midfielders are literally everywhere and good KPFs are very scarce.
OK, so Trac is an elite mid (but no guarantee he will still be one next year) and can go forward and kick goals, but we don't need an elite mid, we just need to have a more functional forward line. Taking McKay out of it would make it very less functional, especially when Charlie doesn't run up the ground.

I like it, not sure it’ll work 😂

Petracca/H chatter:

Trade is a chance, questions all season about playing H/TDK and Charlie in the same side (too tall and slows us down).
Voss likes the big guys.
Petracca a game changer which we don’t have.

My mail, he definitely wants out and wants Carlton…
It's very easy to imagine him in our jumper. I cannot see him in a pies jumper. Ewwww!. That's not him.
Gazza Lyon saying no way. But if there was a way, Sam Darcy not Harry. Surely Trac would not go to Dogs. He has said a big Melbourne club.
But could we do a 3 way trade?

Yes. I know. Pipe dreams.

Agreed. Wouldn’t be trading any required players and certainly none of the big 6. I’d be looking to get it done with picks only.

Why should we trade any of our established or emerging superstars with whom we have strong relationships and affinity? Certainly not to satisfy a club that hasn’t been able to effect the same with one of theirs.

Farrell was still there (before the injury) he’s another Houston.

Especially with the Campo boys and Walkers son who is widely regarded as top 3 pick if not No.1 in 2025 and they are all mids who flourish early.

Trading Petracca for Harry is just plain wrong and a bad list move.

I don't think it would be the same winning a flag with a bunch of ring-ins, than winning one with your mates that you've battled through a decade of misery with and finally made it to the top together.

Same Here. And Sam McClure, a 'supposed' Carlton Supporter (any relation to Mark?) , he has a chance to tone it down and keep control of the narrative here, but it seems he's more interested in being the No.1 newsbreaker and burning the club along the way. https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl...lock-his-potential-trade-20240826-p5k5e6.html

Sam McClure is the son of Geoff McClure who used to write a column in The Age called “Sporting Life” and was an absolutely mad Carlton supporter who got very good info re the club.
