Brereton was spoken to at the end of 1997 after Richmond beat us in last round and we missed finals.Looks like I may have got the names wrong but if you google Carlton coach 1994 or something like that you will eventually discover that Parkin himself thought he was gone after straight set losses in '94 and this is when he came up with the plan to empower playing groups.
I thought I remember in an interview sometime he mentioned the job was offered to two alternates but they didn't want it. I thought those two were Lyon and Brereton but, as someone pointed out, they were still playing at the time so probably wasn't them. Although I think Brereton finished in '96 so we could have been trying for an early retirement.
Might be totally wrong on all this but is just a memory that I have for some reason.
Was offered the job, Jack wanted Allan Jeans to mentor him as well.
Dermott declined and Parko stayed on until 2000 and orchestrated one of the smoothest mentoring/hand overs to Wayne Brittain in the end.
