Beautiful - especially the 'big 4' now they can't buy players or cheat the salary cap.

A level playing field and we see who the pathetically run clubs who relied on money to buy success are.

I put it partially down to talent scouts and where they are concentrating on. 10 Vic teams with scouts looking to share in the spoils while taking the occasional trip interstate and watching tapes may not do as well as two team towns who can identify several players and share half the spoils. If you were associated with young talented players in SA for example, that you knew should be drafted, would you spread the word across Australia or have a quiet word with the two recruiting managers in your own state?

How many players from the interstate sides don't go to draft camp? How many are ignored because of the go home factor? I think it is time Victorian clubs get over their homesickness fear. The interstate clubs draft them regardless of where they are from, build their sides and use the promise of success to retain their players. Some leave, most don't.

I don't think it is as simplistic as having better off field personnel across the board

The success of the top four was more due to the premier zoning than anything else. It had nothing to do with 'buying' success. We were actually forced to import a lot of SA and WA players and eventually even did buy a premiership team in the 70s because we really had been allocated a very average zoning region.

It was only when our junior development program began to blossom in the 80s where we really able to manufacture a lot of top quality players with our development and recruitment at junior level which was not really done before then.

If the top 4 had the same zoning regions they would be positioned 1, 2, 3 & 4 on the ladder. The cream of the crop comes from here, the new system has just disadvantaged them, they never really needed to recruit as well as other sides as the talent pretty much walked into the club.

They need time to address that, same as the clubs that need time to address the off-field issues. In time, Victoria will be very strong.

It's still not level. Your lot still cheat the salary cap. Brisbane do it even more.

Just for the finals:

Go Saints!
Go Roos!
Go Cats!
Go Bulldogs!

Ha Ha Ha - Classic stuff!

Sucked in Victoria! - Looks like another year with out the cup aswell!

Who are you having a go at here? I'm a Victorian and all I care about is my club. Most Victorians are the same. I don't really care who wins the flag if my team can't win, so who cares where they are from?

The attitude presented in your quote is insular, and it frustrates me. I hate insular attitudes from people who can't accept that clubs from all over Australia compete in the AFL and not just 6 clubs from SA, WA, NSW and Qld.

Where the clubs are form, should be irrelevant. We shouldn't even be discussing it. This a club competition, not State of Origin.

Go easy Dan , he's just a kid. He'll understand all that when he grows up.

I think it is a shame that so many Vic teams are down the bottom of the ladder.

My answer is to merge Melb and Carton. As well as have Collingwood take over the Hawks, and then Richmond could just cease to exsist.

There I think that just cut at least three Vic teams out of the bottom 8.

Now lets put a couple of teams back in:

Western Sydney.
Gold Coast Sharks.

Go the AUSTRALIAN Football League. Go you good thing.

I think you're pretty much spot-on here. Local clubs are more likely to take a gamble on players from their own state with later picks or in the rookie draft. Embley was a late pick, Fletcher was rookie drafted, Cox was rookie drafted. The top-end picks are usually pretty clear-cut, but when you get down pick 50, the knowledge on your home turf pays off. In the case of WA, WC have selected Graham, Nicoski, B.Jones in the rookie draft. All three should have lengthy AFL careers. I seriously doubt the ten Victorian teams knew more about these guys.
