Steve Hocking said managers and list managers have a ‘fair idea’ about how compo is worked out, but given the AFL can then use their own discretion there is no way of being 100% sure
And Simon Lethlean moreso than most, since he oversaw the FA compo process

Sounded like they were working on a trade
No, the two clubs are working towards Band 1 ......how often have we seen two clubs work together for an outcome that suits both clubs

my best guess and I think the sensible solution is that if the crows had any doubt, they let the saints know they will match the bid so the saints know up front we will match and therefore lets sit down and try and work out a suitable trade as I also think St Kilda are too far down the road to hang Brad out to dry as well
We have to match first then find out the compo, so we have to make that decision now effectively

He also said Crows and Saints were talking, both professionals and expects it to go through smoothly. Why would we be talking if it was pick 2?
The Crows want pick 2, the Saints don’t want to have to trade, I would suggest the negotiations are centered around that. Maybe the initial offer from the Saints was just below Band 1, so now the clubs are negotiating whether there is a way it can get there while also benefiting the Saints e.g. taking a player off their books for a salary dump. It also suggests that anyone speculating on salary at this stage is taking an educated guess, because not even the people involved know the final details yet.

Danger supposedly.

He also said he hadn't received any contact about increasing Brads offer and laughed at some of the stuff he's read today

Only aspect of the Dangerfield trade is that Stephen Wells is very fair in trade negotiations .....think you'll se that in the Cameron trade

The two clubs certainly didn't cooperate the same as I imagine the Saints & Crows are .....we were still looking to contend when Danger left, and that move probably cost us a flag IMHO

Hope you are right
Look, they could also be talking about a trade as the Crows have said they will match the Saints’ offer, and the Saints have said they can’t up their offer. It’s seriously pointless to speculate because no one in that negotiating room is going to leak the actual details at this stage of proceedings. Any journo or someone who says they have solid info is just guessing or is being fed crap.

Provided you get band 1 compensation it’s a pretty good deal for the club. Webster and Dunstan are both AFL-quality players who can’t get a look in due to the Saints current depth in either area.

Think you’ll rebound pretty quickly with the group you’ve got. Still lots of quality players in that middle age group, and you’ve managed to cycle through a bunch of young players throughout the year which gives you a fair bit of clarity into your best 22 going forward. Plus a raft of draft picks.

Watch us take 2 saints players and still get band 2.

Ah, but we won't. If we only get band 2, we'll have to suddenly forget about our promise to take the spuds.

It's actually very interesting how the "promise" is laid out. We should promise only to take the spuds if we get Band 1.
We should not promise to do this just because the Saints upped the offer to $700K.
In fact, either or both of the Crows/Saints may end up extremely inconvenienced should the VFL offer only Band 2 compensation.

These players won't be coming to the Crows .....firstly they don't fit the need profile of Nicks .....secondly, players won't come if they feel they've only been recruited to satisfy a 3rd party deal

Players traded like to feel love and wanted

They'll end up at other clubs ....the result for St Kilda will be the same, salary dump

I don't get all the talk about if Crouch is worth pick 2. It should be whether Crouch is worth band 1. Band 1 just happens to be pick 2 because we finished bottom.

Correct weight.

Brouch being worth Pick 2 or Pick 19 is absolutely and totally irrelevant to the discussion in terms of compensation for us.

The only consideration that the AFL needs to make is if he is a Band 1 compensation. If he is, then so be it, it is fortuitous then we are in this position that it happens to be Pick 2.

The AFC should not be penalized Band 1 compensation just because it is Pick 2.

FFS.

We better be on the phone to AFL house. Bottom club about to lose their #1 midfielder and AFL accreditated media trying to push the narrative we shouldn't get band 1.
Woe is us .....we've lost 3 to Free Agency in one year ....a bottom team can't afford that on top of losing class players Greenwood and Keath last year

We're on the verge of shutting up shop and handing back the keys ......we need help Mr AFL :moustache:

Thanks mate, I’m actually pretty confident this is going to be a great offseason for both our clubs. Some serious talent your bringing in, and re signing De Koning is a great move. Just add a big body to protect Cripps, get Curnow on the field and youve got a fair team.

Not sure what that means, but it’s certainly not a new thing for players to be included in a deal to satisfy other conditions. We took on Summer, Lamb and Phillips to facilitate getting Plowman to the club. They certainly felt no ill will at getting another opportunity.

Webster and Dunstan will be happy to go across if it means game time and a top up on their contracts.

Was going to be starved of midfield opportunities and consigned to a HFF .....returned to Freo, shown some love and absolutely flourished in the midfield late season

Will be a starting midfielder for Freo in 2021 .....great win/win story
