All good. Appreciate the apology. I wouldn’t say I make outlandish commentary before the games but I guess that’s subjective. I’m just passionate and know this team is capable of more. We’ve been building for years and still carry a few ongoing weaknesses but have improved as a unit as a whole. But we should still expect more.
You sound like Dylan12

Think Andrews will be required to play on Thilthorpe so not sure there will be a whole lot of "dropping off". Particularly if Thilthorpe plays closest to goal which seems a reasonable expectation.

Thilthorpe playing close to goal is great for Andrews to drop off. We saw the same with McKay where if a player decides to sit deep then they aren’t exactly providing any impact. It allows Andrews to zone off to a kick away and intercept with ease. Although Andrews didn’t drop off a whole lot against Carlton, McKay played himself out of the game playing so deep.

A great way to nullify an intercepter is to work yourself up the ground. Make them choose between following you or staying back. If they follow you they take themselves out of the next contest, and if they don’t then it’s free territory.

Thinking about this game I think the main Keays are:

  • To start well. Adelaide led the Giants 54-23 (before losing 106-90... That's 83-36 after that point), they led Carlton 49-7 (after that it was 69-55 so pretty even), led Collingwood 28-2, altho more relevantly it was 13 scoring shots to 2 at that point (4-6 to 8-9 after that). Then they led St Kilda 44-7 and after that it was 77-62 so again quite even. Starting well on the road is always crucial but this need is heightened this week by Adelaide's quite regular strong starts, especially at home.
  • The midfield battle. The experts talk about Adelaide's ability to transition quickly from "inside to outside". This being the case our handball intercept game will have to be ON. With Payne missing a bit more reliance goes onto our midfield to protect our defence.
  • How good is our system really? Has the form of Payne and Andrews been making the system look good? Or has the system been making Payne and Andrews look good? I actually think it's the latter, and I'm hoping I'm right! But we will learn more about this on Sunday.

Looking forward to the game. Flying over on Sunday. Hopefully we play better than in Round 1! Regardless I'm reasonably confident of being entertained; both teams play the right way.

OMG I had a genuine 1970s version of this that my kids wanted read every day for about five years in the naughties.

Could recite it from memory. Before dementia of course. Now just recognise the cover picture.

Best book I gift to every new parent I know is Alexander and terrible horrible no good very bad day. Not the movie - they made a happy ending. Ruined it.

Hmmm, ball movement out of the backline might be stagnant with that mix. I'd prefer Madden in for Ah Chee & let both him & McKenna run the ball out handballing to each other ;)
With LESTER THE SPEED MACHINE bolting up the ground, we should be right.

:thumbsu:My grandchildren loved the Dr Seuss books, fantastic series of books. Them and the Little Golden Books(The Little Red Caboose/Poky little Puppy etc.) were my go to when reading to them and later them reading to me, lovely memories.:blueheart::yellowheart::greenheart:

Do they still publish Enid Blyton books or are they too politically incorrect now? Were certainly a favourite of mine as a child (and now still lol).

Some aren't so much politically incorrect as literally racist but most are still around. I still love most of them.

Grasshopper keep thinking

Gardiner has had two solid VFL hitouts and irrespective, he is a proven AFL standard defender who has often come straight back into the side off limited preparation in previous seasons.

We signed him to a new 3 year contract recently.

Joyce was adequate most of the time in the first few rounds but Gardiner is a class above and surely must be selected

Lol, heard about some of them being cancelled but didn't know much about it as it wasn't anything I had read. Assumed it was over reaction but perhaps not lol.

I was a big faraway tree fan. Still love it.

Blyton’s The Little Black Doll sees the doll of the title, Sambo, ostracised for its “ugly black face”, and only accepted when its face is washed “clean” by the rain.

Apparently pretty shitty views generally IRL too. I still love her Famous Five, Secret Seven, and the Faraway Tree books (though some of the last is slightly more offputting in retrospect than the others).

The Little Black Doll keeps getting regurgitated any time her name is mentioned. Enid Blyton probably wrote hundreds of books. Apart from magazine articles ,letters, short stories.

If you trawl through them all you'll find some racist sentiments ,if not occasional outright racism. She was a product of her generation between the two great wars. An era of distrust and colonial sentiments.

Overall her stories were full of hope ,positivity and interest for millions of adolescents growing up and enriched their lives. Especially those who weren't otherwise interested in books or hadn't reached the level of maturity to need something more complex. But no doubt started them on the path to embrace literature.

Her personal life had more than its share of trauma. Like all historical figures who sometimes didn't meet today's standards in what they said we understand that but still appreciate what she gave the world.

Interesting to watch the flow of money, lions have firmed in to $1.72 during the week from $2.

We seem to be quietly getting respect from commentators and punters.

Whately has perennially doubted us since our rise but reckons we are the real deal.

None of this determines our destiny but i find the outside perspective worth considering.

It will be a full-strength crows lineup at AO where they have been excellent. We might only be missing Payne but if it’s Kiddy as well that’s a bit of disruption in the backline.

A win here would be a serious statement.

Funnily enough i remember it wad AO vs Port in 2019 when i first thought hang on we are not just making up the numbers here. Maybe Keays could terrorise Lachie for us!

Have a feeling that our winning streak ends here.

Looking ahead at the fixture I think we lose this week and then don't lose again until Round 18 against the Dees in Melbourne.

Since we lost that Port game badly in AO, I think players will be out to correct that this time. Crows look a bit wobbly after Ballarat visit and we will ask more questions. We'll win if our new defense combo with Joyce/Gardiner and Rich holds up .

Clarke on Brown, wasn't it the goose Maguire that collided into Brown in the off season .
Or is the Clarke another one brown copped.
btw love Goose , wonder how he's going.
I did a little Googling, you're right Matt McGuire got him at trying. A car on the Gold Coast got him another time, and he did have a run in with Mitch Clark but had also run in Fremantle’s Luke McPharlin earlier that year. He finally retired after a run in with Greater Western Sydney’s Tom Bugg. So friendly fire twice at least. He sure was beat up in the end.

Yes I sometimes wonder how we people now will be judged in 50-100 years with the benefit of hindsight, we could be seen as Neanderthal like by future generations.

Judging generations past by todays standards is nowhere near fair, 99.99% of "enlightened" people today if born in a previous generation would have gone along willingly with what was considered the norm back then but abhorrent now ... very few people through history will rail against a vast majority group think.

One thing about the crows is there are always portions of their games that I’ve watched where they switch off. If we are up and about we will score heavily during these periods. Hopefully enough to win.

Dude, stay on topic. We're talking the Famous Five and racist old people!

When I was young I loved the Naughtiest Girl In The School books. Can't say I recall any racist connotations in those but that was a long time ago.

This discussion reminds me of a Jonathan Pie rant from a few years ago (contains profanities):
