Sure it’s the constant criticism- but I have no doubt that a diligent focus can improve his marking.
It’s not rocket science.
He’s 28. Contested marking is a skill. He doesn’t have it. Neither does Nic Nat. It’s just not his strength. No amount of training will make him a forward at 28.

Melbourne have tried to use Gawn as a key forward this year, he hasn't turned out to be the contested marking beast they thought he might be, Gawn has had a lot of balls bounce off his hands year
Yeah, his best marks are (in my opinion) the ones he takes when he floats into the backline and intercepts things. He makes it really difficult.

Agree. But I think we tapped into something by playing him more forward last year (he kicked 0.6 goals a game, good for a ruck). I would have liked to see Fly go that way with Cox or Cameron getting more ruck time.

Apparently, that stat is severely overrated, so we're giving him the flick.
Beggars belief that all these other clubs are chasing a player so universally regarded as useless by his own supporters?

Or have I got the wrong end of the thread?

He's not useless. But he is over-paid and his contract is a millstone.
If we could get rid of him without paying any further more of his contract, it's a no brainer for me.

But if we continue paying $300k p/ season as reported, then it doesn't make any sense.

$300k for Grundy plus $650 for McStay is not a good outcome.

It makes sense when we get a first round pick back and have $700k to spend in the now or in the future...
Especially if we feel our ruck stocks of Cameron, Cox and Begg will hold up just fine-even if it is a temporary downgrade

$650 k for McStay hahaha
I don’t know whether to laugh or cry the amount of money players earn these days..
As for BBL cricketers, I’m coming back as one in my next life. Can’t be so hard to swing a bat surely.

To be precise it's $300 k for Grundy to play for another team - if Melbourne, possibly we pay to help improve their on ball work

It’s easy to swing a bat.
Connecting with the ball in a meaningful manner is another story.

But the $700k ($650k) is going straight to McStay from all reports.

So under that deal it becomes almost a straight swap Grundy for McStay and that's not smart trading.

Grundy is overpaid. It was a terrible contract to offer him. But if we have to chip in the $300k p/ season I just don't see it being worthwhile.

If you read the HS article---our targets have been told their arrivals have no impact on the departures.
McStay is coming regardless.

That may be the case, but the point still stands.

We lose Grundy to our finals competitors
We gain McStay
And our TPP position remains about the same. It's not good business in my mind.

I'm very keen to remove Grundy's contract but if we were forced to continue paying $300k, then I would want a top 10 draft pick to balance the deal. Unlikely.

I don't buy into the "overpaid" line.

I don't know where all this inflation is coming from but I am led to believe that we are only offering 150k of grundys salary which may be negotiable, we will pay 200k max

This seems more plausible, especially with Wright at the helm. There’s a tendency for numbers to be exaggerated on BigFooty, and then exaggerated again. Some of the $ being quoted in here to ‘pay’ Grundy to leave, and bring McStay in, don’t make sense. And the guy we have in charge of this is nothing if not sensible.

I hear he might stay
Or he might go now
If he Mc Stays there will be trouble
If he goes there might be a double Mc Henry with sides of Dusty sliders and a 1 st round pickled selection...
But.
Wtf do I know

Only Cox and Cameron can Ruck with any acceptable skill - Beggs not ready so we’ll need another Ruckman.

Lots of water still needs to pass under the bridge.
G O N E S K I. Told you all midsession. “ Take a haircut , or we explore our options “ G W. As stated at the time , the figure mentioned, I don’t know , that is the only speculation part of it
