we did this to ourselves due to ego and hubris and we must never do it again.

To Brodie, I'd like to say thank you for your time at the club. On field, you starred in your own right and were our fantasy pig. R1, 2016 was a brilliant game and your match winning goal will remain with me for a long time yet to come. However, you will not be defined purely for your on-field efforts. For the years you were at the club, you worked hard to create a better environment for all and were the peaceful hippy we needed. Collingwood was made a better place because of you and that, outside of your footballing contributions, will remain at the club for the years to come. You can't be blamed for accepting the highest price and I wish your career at Collingwood didn't end like this. All the best for the future, KS.

Also a significant data point.

one player we care a lot whether he stays or goes and what we get if he goes

the other was already a chalk outline for good or bad

I'd rather keep him and move on Cameron and Cox to be honest. Particularly if we have McStay chopping out in the ruck.
But it's done now and time to move forward. I just hope we aren't paying too much of his salary for a pick 27
from what I understand there wasn't enough $$ savings in cutting Cameron and Cox. And having a dependency on one player isn't smart.
Neither Cox nor DC are in the same league as Grundy but the reality is that they are both capable enough while still being better forward options than Grundy. Even Grundy's biggest fans will acknowledge that he didn't do enough up forward. (good midfielder tho)

Best of luck Brodie. Thanks for busting a gut for us. I suppose that we'll never know if the Fly game plan would have worked with you/1 ruckman as when you got injured it hadn't quite clicked.
This has a bit of Peter Moore about it...
I reckon Grundy will do very well in his first year. And then taper off quickly after that

Hey do we know how much we will contribute to Grundy's contract? It was being reported Collingwood would pay 'up to $300k' of his contract.. maybe we negotiated less since we didn't get the first round pick we wanted? Anyone know?

The moral of the story is

If one of our players is offered a crazy contract by another club and required us to match it to keep them.

repeat after me.

thank you for your service but we will not be breaking the balance of our list for you so if that is what ypu require we will be parting ways. we expect your new club to offer a trade commensurate with the contract they have offered you.

we did this to ourselves due to ego and hubris and we must never do it again.
Unless it's Nick Daicos.

****.

We're going to do it again, because us supporters will get the pitch forks out if we lose someone who is starring.

All the best Brodie Grundy, Thanks for your 177 games for the Pies.
Gone to the Dees, gone from the Pies.

Good luck Brodie you're gonna kill us at Kings Birthday next year and I don't mind.

Always played your heart out, you'll do it for them too and I'm sad. The business side of footy is ugly.

It goes both ways. I actually think players have too much power atm.

Look at JHF and Ollie.

So can someone in list management purchase a calculator now, so we don’t ream ourselves again?

it didnt need a calculator just a functional prefrontal cortex

Yep and before someone craps on again about ‘market value’ a bottom 4 side can afford to throw more at individual players than a premiership contender.

No body matched the crazy deals North were throwing around years ago, yet none of the players went there either.

Good luck Brody.

Unfortunately your Collingwood journey ends now. Many of us would have preferred it to last a bit longer.

Yep this, disappointed it has played out this way and sad to see him depart. Think this trade will come back to bite us. Good luck to him going forward.

Thanks for all the memories you’ve given us all Brodes! Will always be a pie at heart, was pumped when we finally got a big talented physical player to fill the ruck when we drafted you.

All the best and hopefully we don’t go back to losing finals with Fannings and Richards style spuds watching mids walk by th‘em like 07…

Pick 27 really is a shithouse return, if we’re paying over $100k of his salary it’s a terrible deal. But it was inevitable.

Thanks for the memories.
If he only had two years left on his contract, I'd agree, but it's about years 3-5. 900,000+ when his agility and mobility have dropped further. Nah.

I don’t think he’ll have a good year next season. Coming of a PCL and ankle fracture. Last 2 season his marking has been very ordinary.

At his peak he was worth 950k because he was a midfielder as well as a ruckman. He hasn’t been that the last 2-3yrs.

Like Treloar it’s the right decision but a terrible trade return. Gee we wouldn’t want to be paying more than 100k getting only 27 back.
