Oppo Camp Brodie Grundy (Traded to Melbourne 2022)

He was our best player at the time in his prime. Every best player who has just negotiated a new cotract at the 18 clubs will have or be near the biggest contract in their clu s history. He was well within rights to want his best contract.
Not every best player, some take unders. Grundy didn’t and that caused issues. Our club were complicit with those issues when they should have just told Grundy to get stuffed but Grundy played a hand in it.

People forget that in 2018/19 Grundy was in the Brownlow medal conversation. The contract was justified at the time but his role shifted as the game plan changed and suddenly he looked a lot less. Had we considered playing him forward, we might have got better results. The days of pure rucks are effectively over, much like pure wicketkeepers in cricket. They all need something extra to survive or tag team with someone on a smaller contract.

The “market” decided what Grundy was worth and we were forced to pay up, to keep him.
Just like we did with JDG where the “market” forced us to drop the behavioral clauses AND offer him an extra year.

He asked for the biggest contract in Collingwoods history, that’s not negotiating like every other player.
Just remember that contract sizes were smaller in bygone eras. Grundy demanded what the market was offering; if we didn't pay, someone else would have.

Unfortunately, that sort of behaviour in hard balling isn't well-received by players. Geelong manage but only because they are competitive each and every year. It's not as easy as it seems.

If you really want to blame someone, blame the contract structure Collingwood used. It was a nightmare. Whatever we were doing, no other club was and it backfired when a tight salary cap and COVID cuts combined. Who can blame Grundy for accepting the market rate? Is he really going to take unders? He might have actually taken a degree of unders and still been on over one million - he was and still is a good player.

No. He negotiated a contract like every other player. The club and he agreed and signed off and all were happy. Down the track the club changes its mind and gives him an ultimatum, renegotiate or leave.

I think the club caused the problem.

The club signed him for a further 7 years at the end of 2019. No question. Both parties agreed. However, it was he who didn’t live up to his end of the contract. His below expected delivery of play and lack there of, in producing an equivalent level of form expected from your highest paid player. That was the turning point. He was given 3 seasons to return to form and has been no where near it. The club had every right to ask for a renegotiation. He chose not to, and the club resolved its dilemma.

Problem solved…..

I do feel for those who can’t distinguish between players who are totally selfless in their pursuit of team success and those who are self absorbed and only interested in their own little worlds.

Not sure too many care about the World according to Soy Boy now that he only has Dreamons followers. Don’t know how you’ll be able to influence 50 people and their pets on social media. Especially without the Magpie Army behind you.

But I guess that’s why he was spotted lurking in the background at our preseason training session. Wanting to remain relevant.

I don’t think they ever gave him the option to renegotiate. I think his agent said as much.

Renegotiated contract was never talked about. Club had right to ask, but did they? Not really.

The contract was simply framed at the what was - unbeknownst to us - at the tail end of his AA form.

Grundy was and is a bit of a unique 'ruckman' who learned to follow up on his own taps which were always to his feet. Once he made AA the opposition totally dissected his play and just blocked him out from the ground ball.

Now he is a 'ruckman' that needs to reinvent his ruck style.

I don’t recall Jack Crisp publicly demanding a 7 year deal after back to back Copeland trophies, so I wouldn’t say Grundy negotiated a contract just like every other player. You could argue Grundy hinted at an ultimatum first of 7 years or possibly going back home to South Australia. In the end the club and Grundy have agreed to cut the contract short and Grundy is now playing for the Dees and everyone is happy!

On reflection I think it was great list management, not simply about money and had a lot to do with a new approach by Fly & Wright.
We had 3 AFL ruckmen on our list. Grundy needed a forward ruck to pair with, which the other two weren't. Selling either Cox or Cameron or both would have earnt us nothing, buying in the right forward ruck would cost. Cox and Cameron playing together are equivalent to Grundy, give or take some pros and cons (ie. marks vs centre possessions). Keeping them both gives us a back up plan should one go down.
Thats my speculation. We will know more when we see how they use Cox & Cameron this year - I expect most weeks both will play.

You can’t be on top dollar with a 7 year deal & not be an aerial threat as a ruckman. For instance our kick outs we’re probably aimed at Cox far more than Grundy because I think his team mates knew it was a weakness in his game.

True enough but he has always been that way - the contract didn't reflect the value and that is our fault.

Sure you can if you’re a ruckman and a contested ball and clearance beast!

He was by far the best in 2018, worth every cent at that level.

Both parties fault. He Was carrying on about going back to Adelaide when he really had no intention of doing so.
‘we blinked & handed him a ridiculous contract for a ruckman. Bucks did say on radio that the contract was taken out of list management’s hands.
‘Eddie again?

We'll never know but it's time for a far more professional approach to list management with a clear standoff between club management and list management.

Coach and club management should determine list goals and that should be as much input as they have.

We never really used him as a Marking Threat.

Why we should of played him more up Forward

Of Course it was Eddie

Problem is Dave that he didn't mark around the ground either.Had many games with 0 or 1 mark in an entire game.
Agreed he was very much a tap to the feet and run at the ball type ruckman with very little else in the way of weapons.

Don't get me wrong for a while he was awesome but once the opposition coaches realized those limitations they simply blocked him away from the ground balls and double teamed him in the ruck.

It's not totally a matter of lost form - some of it has got to do with his limited ruck style and the complete nullification it has allowed of his influence in comparison to what it was in his AA form.

Ed for sure. Used to stick his nose everywhere. Same with Beams scenario that bit us hard.
