Oppo Camp Brodie Grundy (Traded to Melbourne 2022)

I heard it was Ed's fault we lost in 1970 and again in '77 :) There was a board, there were members, Ed was allowed to dictate for far longer than 2010 justified.
2010 was just the cream on the cake.

Like many you seem to have got a little hazy on just how dire our financial situation was when Eddie stepped in and dragged us kicking and screaming into the 21st century.

When Eddie stepped in we had just had to go begging to the league for a handout - and not a small one.

For any of us older supporters the shame and distress that we were brought to our financial knees was intolerable but Eddie worked us out of it.

He wasn't without his faults - but the board bears as much blame for allowing him full control.

To be sure he stuck his nose in where it shouldn't have been towards the end but as I said before it was the board that lacked the guts to stop it.

And before it's totally forgotten it was Eddie sticking his nose in that stopped the board from firing Malthouse - think about that for a moment.

That would have led us towards another 30 year gap in flags.

Eddie should be blamed for his actions but the vitriol on these pages by some is obscene.

I think the Grundy argument may go even deeper than the contract.
Cameron and Cox were both taking marks deep in defence much like Gawn does. Grundy doesn’t do this.
These marks in defence allow us to attack on the rebound and suits Daicos, Quaynor, Crisp, Noble etc.
Maybe Fly prefers this style of ruckman and sees an opportunity in the future to do more with the money that Grundy was on.

There's certainly some of that in it - because a ruckman who can't mark is a ruck rover to all intents and purposes.

Nice story. Half true. But Grundy did take marks in defence and in attack -- but it's true not as many as Cameron did in the first half of the year. After that Cameron dropped off and we started getting schooled in the ruck. It is true also that Grundy dropped away in the last few years, which doesn't mean he can't return to his best.

It's worth watching some of Grundy's highlights to actually remember what he can do.

A great servant of our club. Now he's gone I'm over talking about him.
Wishing him the best except against us. Seems a lovely young man.

Only for those whose hearts still ache.

I’ll enjoy watching our boys without his Soy Boy efforts in 2023.

He’s the Dreamons problem now.

Then we should have let some let someone else pay for him.
But we didn't. It may not have worked out unfortunately because of his contract; but it is what it is. No point dwelling on it. We had him for a decade where he was a very good player and served us well. I'd rather have loved and lost than not to have loved at all.

In any case, he's only next door. Its nice to see him at training when he stops and chats.

This a is a footy forum dedicating to dwelling on all things Collingwood. I accept things for what they are but I’m also happy to give my opinion on past events.

I loved Grundy’s early time at Collingwood but didn’t love his end as much.

Yes, he didnt have the most ideal last couple years, hopefully he can recapture some good form at melbourne. Just not against us lol Lovely man, I wish him the best.

If I recall correctly, most people were pro-Grundy staying. The attitude shifted in 2021 when he had a less impressive year. While retrospect may be useful, you can't deny some truths.

Its like a winter's morning in Launceston from where I am sitting jonbe. I have vague recollections of pubs and beaches. The WS in '76 was shame to me, getting some of the riches we earnt from the AFL back doesn't rate.
Anyway, Eddie. He is a Collingwood tragic and that excuses many sins for me, even yours. I love his passion. He was also president of the club for a long period of time and thus the figurehead to both the good and bad decisions made during this period. I don't actually know exactly what level of responsibility he had in either but believe he should be celebrated for the many successes.
Like you, as my earlier post noted, I believe club, board and supporters have a degree of responsibility for not forcing leadership change earlier. I hope we have learnt from that.

How could Supporters forced Change at Collingwood?

Heard at times few did try but Eddie knew about the Dirty Laundry for them to go Thru with the Challange

Totally agree with the responsibility side of things but this has been a theme for Collingwood - I am old enough to have lived through the Ranald MacDonald 'New deal' ticket and the disaster that followed in it's wake.

Too often the board and the membership have allowed things to happen - the membership is one thing but it's the board that has the responsibility to ensure probity and due process are followed.

There was a movie brought out many years ago called 'The club' and it went much closer to the bone than many realize.

Has never been enough accountability at the club.

I don’t recall Jack Crisp publicly demanding a 7 year deal after back to back Copeland trophies, so I wouldn’t say Grundy negotiated a contract just like every other player. You could argue Grundy hinted at an ultimatum first of 7 years or possibly going back home to South Australia. In the end the club and Grundy have agreed to cut the contract short and Grundy is now playing for the Dees and everyone is happy!

You seriously think Grundy is happy about the way he was treated? Seriously?

If I was a current top level player I would not be traded to Collingwood, after they reneged on deals with Treloar and Grundy. Moreso if I was indigenous.

It’s business, the situation was brought on by the players wanting free agency and longer deals. It happens in just about every other sport. It’s not the clubs fault.

If he wanted to stay he could have, he just need to take a pay cut. He opted not to, and the rest is history.

Whilst most people were pro Grundy staying the contract itself was still a hot topic of debate. Many were happy to keep Grundy but not with that contract.

His form fell right away after 2019. He used hub life as an excuse for what appeared to be a less enthusiastic approach to the game during covid, then never recovered his former glory when AFL football reverted to a normal fixture again. Then of course last year was an injury disaster, giving him no opportunity to prove he could still be an AA ruckman.

If he was not happy with the way he was treated, many supporters also weren't convinced he had his former hunger for the game. Disgruntled supporters were not responsible for his loss. It was the coaches and football hierarchy at the club who decided that he should go. So adamant were they that Grundy was no longer a required player that renegotiating his contract was not apparently even considered an option.

In the end, the weakness created by his loss to Melbourne was hopefully balanced by the recruitment of Mitchell. Grundy now has the opportunity to show us what might have been by resurrecting his career with Melbourne. If he turns it on for them, we will be left wondering why he could not have done the same for us while the opportunity was there.

Just from the Interview when he said Winning a Flag is not that Important compared to other things

Heard Wright was the main one Pushing him out as he hated the Contract he was on
