Can Port win a premiership under Ken Hinkley?

You can talk Ken all you want and reaching Grand Finals, but is any coach in history taking the below forward line to a Grand Final...

HF: Evans, Ratagulea, Rioli
FF: McEntee, Dixon, Georgiades

Craig McRae and Collingwood recently kicked a winning score on Grand Final day with…

HF McCreery, Frampton/Cox, De Goey
FF: Elliott, Mihocek, Hill

Prior to Hill’s Norm Smith Medal on the day, there were zero individual accolades amongst that lot.

This idea that Hinkley is roughly 20 blue chips short up and down the ground, while the rest of the league makes do with plenty of squadbods and average individuals who are somehow worth far more as the sum of their parts is wild.

The list just isnt that great. Ken or not you aint winning a flag with Dixon/Esava/Evans/McEntee/Narkle parading around in your forward line

How do you beat a side when you got 3 of their rejects lining up in the forward line?

They got a pretty big turnover to do in the off season to get the best out of the top 15 players they have. Perryman isnt the answer here. They need like 4 bodies in who can make a impact, especially up forward.
You can add Rioli to that list. Just playing to increase his Superannuation.

Clearly he needs more 'conditioning' (I think people know what I'm trying to say here without getting into strife).

And the rumours about his off field 'pursuits'....surely PA knows about it. Have they done anything about it?

I’m no port fan, but this is silly.
You’ve just watched Team A absolutely smash Team B so your team is (surprise surprise) filled with players from Team A.
For those of us whose memory extends beyond the previous 24 hours, clear misses are Drew, and, as you pretty much admit Georgiades and Allir. Honestly, what serious person considers Kolodjashnji a comparable player to Aliir Aliir? And Dempsey relegating Rozee to the bench? Lol.
There are probably others, but those three alone bring the combined team close to parity in terms of contribution.
Drew is woeful. Its not a 1 game thing. Its a whole year thing. He isnt better then Dangerfield or Atkins in anyway.

Georgiades is just too one dimensional. Im 100% taking Henry for versatility reasons. Georgiades lack of versaility is a huge issue so not sure why we wanna ignore it

Kolo is just a very very underrated and good footballer. He isnt the fancy intercept marker. He instead just beats his opponent every game.

All of this just pushes to the previous conversations where the fans here say Geelong are finished, have the worst list of youngsters ever and so forth. Perhaps you were just all wrong on that and need to adjust your opinions a bit?

This forward line shits all over the one you have. I mean fair dinkum its not even close. Just a odd comparison

Hill won the Norm smith... I mean I dont think Willie Rioli is winning a Norm Smith and I dont think McEntee is taking the marks Elliot was

If Hinkley took charge of that front six he’d be lucky to score 5 goals a week.

Ken took over when the club was in quite a lot of trouble off field as well, so I think he's stayed on because with Kochie and others they have firstly rebuilt the brand up, and also been competitive and a good side to watch.
It's probably time for a change of ideas though if it's a straight sets exit.

Five different midfields in the last 5 disastrous finals campaigns.

Zero different head coaches.

You be the judge.
Nah. Rozee/Butters/Boak/Wines/Drew been dogging the contest in finals for a while now

They need to take the blame for that. Ken cant prevent Drew from being Fumbles McGee and Rozee from shirking the contest im afraid

Home finals under Ken:
  • EF (2014) vs Richmond = WON
  • EF (2017) vs West Coast = LOST
  • QF (2020) vs Geelong = WON
  • PF (2020) vs Richmond = LOST
  • QF (2021) vs Geelong = WON
  • PF (2021) vs Western Bulldogs = LOST
  • SF (2023) vs GWS = LOST
  • QF (2024) vs Geelong = LOST
3 wins, 5 losses.

Hinkley's record in home finals is about as bad as it gets.

Not only are Port the higher ranking team for all those finals but every single time they have had a genuine home ground and travel advantage.

Here's how he stacks up against all other teams since Port joined the league:

It's worse when you remember that a lot of the teams don't actually play finals at their home grounds or face opponents that share their ground or who have not had to travel. This includes the likes of West Coast, Adelaide and Brisbane who had to 'host' Vic clubs at the MCG because of the old contract situation as well as those who had to play finals in 2020 and 2021 in other states.

This is illuminating, but what would be even more illuminating would be the same list excluding neutral games (e.g two Melbourne based sides playing each other in Melbourne). I can only assume the gap would become even wider.

"we need them to stick with us"

A call to arms to the faithful from King Kenny. Well said.
His coaching couldn't outdo master coach Scotty who has a far superior team. Arm tied behind his back last night

Kenny just about has the best home and away record in the comp. He is a master at getting average teams into finals. It's inevitable that at some stage this will translate into success. Sheer weight of numbers will win out in the end. Port people just need to hold the faith and stick fat with Ken. He will take them to flag glory. Just a matter of time.

Hey idiot,

They got pumped by 84 points.

Players are responsible for their effort on the field.

Stop being an idiot, idiot.

so the players coach and motivate themselves? idiot

Shane Ellen 5 goals in a Grand Final board

No chance a Port fan would do this so ill do it

FB: Bergman Henry Kolodjashnji
HB: Gutrhie, Blicavs, Humprhies
C: Holmes, Atkins, Dempsey
HF: Stengle, Cameron, JHF
FF: Miers, Neale, Henry
R: Sweet Butters Dangerfield
I/C : Rozee Mannagh Duncan Wines

Id have 6. You could make arguments for Alir over Kolodjashnji or Georgiades over Henry and thats it. Id take Kolo though for a more consistent player and Henry as a guy who does more up the ground so a better fit for a side. Ports spine is very mediocre and coupled with the fact you then have disappearing acts from Rozee, Butters and Drew and its pretty clear why they get toweled up in games like yesterday

HB: Guthrie, Allir, Humphries

Port could actually really do with an elite decision maker and kick inside 50 like Close. In fact just swap our forward line for theirs and it would solve a lot of their issues.

Their defence does lack a bit of stopping power. They missed Houston and Farrel for quality rebound.

However their biggest issue in finals is their A grade midfielders underperforming. Even when they win the ball, what they do with it as been under par. Boak showed all the smarts and grits as the extra supporting the stoppage, that the likes of Rozee/Butters/JHF/Drew needed to all game. A couple got injured but were poor before then. They are very one way, so if they aren't dominating then when the opposition mids break free they cause a lot of damage.

You can't win finals football when an important, AA-quality part of your field crumbles. Especially when it's the heart beat of the team.

Honestly don't know how you blame Hinkley for this.

He's coached them to a 2nd spot finish.

It's not like a coach can do anything drastic on game-day.

Players and leaders on the field need to step up.
He had two whole weeks to prepare the team for this game and got blown out by 80+. What do you mean, “don’t know how you blame Hinkley”? This isn’t the only time this has happened. Do Hinkley defenders think it’s just a big coincidence we’ve gone through dozens of different players and different assistant coaches and still get the same ass beatings every finals?

What do you think the coaches job is? They should be inspiring the players to run through brick walls, not piss their pants and fumble because finals are scary.
