So woeful he’s just gone to his 3rd AFL club ahead of any potential mature aged VFL recruit who could do the job. Still, you know best... 👍😂
There's been some weird rants to the subject but McKernan will offer the Saints a similar sort of depth/positional flexibility to what Levi does for us.
He's no star by any stretch of the imagination but he's more or less a plug & play option should their rucks/kpf go down injured.

You're not related to him are you?

He's just gone to his third club but I'm not sure that demonstrates his quality.

He was just let go by the Bombers who enter 2021 with who as their tall forwards?

The guy is 30 years old and has spent 11 years in the system for 87 games and 72 goals. He's a bog ordinary footballer at best who plays one good game every 20 odd and then disappears completely. Not for patches. Not just for games either. But for months.

Sorry but the guy is no good. And I'm not sure why you're bringing VFL players into the discussion but yeah I'd rather we look there for someone if need be. In fact I'd rather go with an empty list spot than bring in McKernan.

He offers nothing. Maybe you saw him in that one game though where he dominated and you're extrapolating from that?
I wasn't looking for him to be best 22, just someone who can do the job if TDK, Pinno or Levi go down. He can play in any of those positions, and may even play a decent game if he knows he doesn't have to back it up week after week.

BTW, I was paraphrasing Basil Fawlty with the last Smart-arse comment ;-p

Exactly my point - I did open my last statement with "I realise he’s consistently inconsistent" so no surprise there, but he can cover a (ruck) spot that someone like Harry shouldn't be forced to.

Hoping we go with high risk/high reward selections with the picks we have in this year's draft.

This is not the year to try go for safe bet type selections. Let's roll the dice here.
I heard someone on SEN (I think Leigh Montagna) mention that there was a lot of 'potential gold' in this years draft because the good footballers coming through this year had not been looked at assessed due to covid stopping the local footy.

Precisely; my thoughts exactly, particularly the way things panned out for us in trading. I also hope we are not shy in trying to trade up on the day if we think that a few clubs just above us might be looking at the same player.

Changed my mind and think trading up 38 & 48 would be worthwhile if available.
If only 50 or so selections are going to be made then our next pick 78 would come in to not far off our current 48 anyway.

Potential other party would be Bulldogs who have 2319 points so still slightly short of a match at #1.
Our picks have value 767 v their 26 (729)
However Port have 35 & 47.

I'd be happy with Henry Walsh, Tom Highmore as mature KPD depth and take a chance on a genuine small forward down the order.

It's easy to move down, but you need to break the bank to move up the draft board. The premium to move up the board should be around 20-30% in terms of points.

We'd probably need to bundle a future selection with 38 and 48. Not sure it's worth it.

TBH, I really like where we sit in this years draft. The pressure is off with no expectations on high selections. Could be the year we actually find some quality deeper in the draft.

Can someone help me here... With recent delistings, how many places are available on the list, how many will be taken in the draft, and would we be leaving a space for the preseason supplemental selection, or god-forbid put someone on long-term injury list to add someone via pss?

There should be 4 list spots available.

Would you want to carry three ruckman (two of which are developing) given list sizes are reducing?

I'm not convinced we've seen the full extent of list size reduction.

If list sizes reduce by another 2 next season too, clubs may have to think about settling with one primary and one backup ruck only.

List spots are progressively becoming more valuable and need to be used wisely.

If we assume that we take Kennedy as rookie, we will have a total of 4 list spaces (1-3 senior list).
Depending on if we find a DFA or not, we're likely to take 2-3 at the draft, and probably a decent chance that we leave that last rookie spot open.

It's why you would target a ruck/forward, rather than just a pure ruckman

For me, Versatility was always the number one objective to sound list management, even moreso now

Part of me wonders if we'd be better served taking someone like Jackson Trengove as a DFA.

Covers two obvious gaps - depth KPD and depth ruck - and in a real emergency could be thrown forward. At 30yo, I think he'd comfortably have a couple years in the tank given his time in the seniors would be limited. Was also part of the WB leadership group for a few years, and would presumably be contributing in that space in the reserves games.

I'm not necessarily convinced a ruck is a priority through the draft. TDK is the man for the next 10 years, so we can just ride the depth ruck merry-go-round every 3 or 4 years to ensure we have depth behind him.

A key forward might actually be a better investment given Charlie's latest setback. Who is this year's Himmelberg (Ade) or Ratugolea or Finlayson or Riccardi?

We really have a poor hand at this draft but I'd be stoked with Henry Walsh (Ruck), James Rowe (Small Forward) and Gibbons

Also for our last pick either Oscar McDonald, State league KPD or take the pick to the Mid Season Draft

I'm fine. A lot of clubs used to carry 4 rucks not that far back. Levi is coming to an end and McKay can't ruck. An 18 year old ruck behind a 21 year old ruck/forward in TDK and Pittonet doesn't concern me.

He'll stay in the VFL for a couple of years anyway and won't want to leave his brother.

I want a proper ruck serving our developing mids in the twos as well.

Wouldn't it depend on how far you wanted to move up? For us it was simply a swap of future firsts for an extra pick late in the first round. I'd be thinking of something similar this year but subtler.

Each to their own. I think we could get Henry Walsh or another project ruckman after our first pick. I don't know anything about Highmore but if he's described as 'mature KPD depth' I think we could get him late as well. I wouldn't be worrying much about a small forward (although most everyone else does) unless one we really rate falls into our lap.

Himmelberg/Esava, Bothell could chop out in the ruck

Only having two rucks across a squad seems very risky, if you play one in the 1sts and one in the 2nds, you leave yourself wide open if one of them suffers any form of injury.

There is nothing wrong with playing two rucks in the 2nds, it gives the two ruckman an actual chance to develop their forward craft also.

I personally see TDK as our number 1 ruck, he’s very raw and will need time, on the flip side, I can also see him playing forward in the absence of Curnow which would mean Pitto rucks more, if anything like this happens, the development of our seconds side suffers as the mids feed off a ruck who is not competent.

From a list balance perspective we have 5 less talls on our list and it would seem we have 2injured talls instead of 3-4 for most of last year. We could be badly exposed if further injuries strike. Any talls we draft would need to be over 18 if they are to make any impact if called on. It is a bit of a worry.

3rd round to rookie for Highmore. Only 193cm but strong one on one, athletic and great hands.

Hybrids are going to be the new must have with these list reductions .
I however feel the pure footballer will miss out imagine g Williams trying to get a gig these days no chance
