I respect the sentiment of the idea, however in these situations I am always wary of knee-jerk reactions while people are still grieving.

If is still seems like the right thing to do in 6-12 months time, then we should look at it.
Agree..
The club has said they will explore ways to honour his memory but for now the focus is on his family..

This. Every time someone passes there are instant (and usually over eager) calls to name something after them. It really sucks that Dean passed, but this isn't the right way to honour him in my opinion.

not knee jerk it seems logical

what the hell does showdown medal stand for?

naming the medal after Dean will mean something to both clubs and will represent courage on the footy field the same courage that the club has spoken about today

and lets be brutally honest there I cant think of anything else of Significance that connects both clubs

It's better than the Brad Symes medal for sure.

But I agree that we should wait until the emotions of the family are not so raw. This is a time for grieving. Commemorating his legacy comes later.

It's knee jerk because he passed 12 hours ago.

To be completely honest, I don't think it is really appropriate. Yes Dean had a connection to both clubs, but it wouldn't be any more appropriate than the Matthew Bode Medal, or the James/Bond Medal, Tony McGuinness, Tyson Edwards, Shaun Rehn.

I'm not trying to be cold here, but if and when we name the medal, it should be based on someone who made a big contribution at both clubs.

Lol

I like the idea, but feel that it may not mean as much to Port Adelaide as it does to us. Yes, he helped in a premiership there, but is there anyone left there who was there in 2004? Is there anyone left at Port that even knew him? I think there are other ways we could honour the great man, and I very much expect we will.

I am all for the idea of the Bailey cup between us and Melbourne.

The Showdown medal doesn't really need a name, but even if it did, surely it'd make more sense to draw on one of the many Crows/Power on field champions. Bickley/Tredrea, Ricciuto/Wanganeen, McLeod/Cornes. Dean Bailey was a good bloke, and went terribly, but it seems like naming the Showdown medal after him would just be piggybacking off his name when he contributed far more to other clubs (like Melbourne and Essendon.)

I'm in the wait and see how it feels in 6 months time camp.

Plenty of people be involved at both clubs as pointed out. (James Bond medal made me chuckle and is arguably very fitting).

Tragic loss - lets give it time before making such a significant decision as it relates to his legacy.

I am also in the camp that may sound insensitive by saying that I don't think it's a good idea to name that medal after Bailey as it's not quite appropriate in my opinion. While his contribution to both clubs has been great, he never played for either team, and was not a senior coach at either team either -

Personally don't even think there should be a showdown medal. Just another game.

Maybe we could give another award internally in his honour.
I like the idea of an internal club medal or award. His mentoring of the playing and coaching group is well known so something along these lines where a recipient would be known for his abilities to pass on his knowledge.
Whether it be as a player or coach.

Agree and I say this with the utmost respect but what about the Dean Bailey memorial shield between Port Adelaide magpies and the Adelaide Crows reserves.

Adelaide/Melbourne matches should be named after Dean. Showdowns have quite a negative spirit about them.

Don't mind this idea however, what about a charity day between the Adelaide Football Club and the Melbourne Football club. The Dean Bailey cup.

For example, every February, next year in Adelaide and then the year after in Melbourne; both the Crows A's and B's play Melbourne A's and B's as a trial game and then they can organise a black tie event with an sports memorabilia auction, guess speakers (Sam Newman, et el) where the money raised can go to cancer research.

Can you imagine the uproar if Port were excluded from the tribute? The SANFL would not approve and force us to play a three way game NAB cup style.

They have every right to pay tribute to him. He did spend 6 years as a senior assistant coach at the club.

Lets not turn this into a port crows tit for tat pls.

Im all for the first showdown paying tribute to Dean.
Agree that anything more should be considered later in the year.
