Last time I looked, it’s a fast track over West, to drop 1 of possibly only 2 elite hard runners we have, would appear crazy. There’s absolutely no chance Scott doesn’t play.
He’s a liability ball in hand and even without the ball he doesn’t position himself well to impact

Apparently being able to run the most kms is enough to impress some here despite the minimal impact

We should recruit solely based on beep test and 2km results the bf board would jizz themselves

Why not…?

He was poor for large parts of the game.

It was pretty clear at the game that he often mistimes his leap at the footy, is bodied out of contests too easily, gets lost when the ball hits the deck and doesn’t have very good positioning & game sense when opposing mids are around the 70-80m region - all of these factors completely negate his athletic abilities.

Also, his disposal and decision making is haphazard and I don’t actually think our team trust him with ball in hand.

I think Corr and Dawson show far more immediate benefits to the team as defenders and we should be playing them accordingly.

If we want to persist with Bonar in this role, that’s fine, but there’s a reason we have a reserve team to help develop our players.
Clarkson rates him. Which is a pretty important factor.

I also was at the game & saw things a little differently. He like all our defenders had some moments that they’d like to forget. No real surprise in the first outing of their new system.

I thought he won some critical contests throughout the day. When he attacked the ball & killed it, he was able to use his athletic traits and worked well in our team defence. When he was complacent, worrying too much about his man, he looked average, same could be said about Ziebell and Luke. At various stages all three had to play undersized given no Buckets & all three did a good job IMO.

Interesting take re his disposal. He went at 100% disposal efficiency yesterday. Validates my opinion that he didn’t overcomplicate things and played within his limitations. We all see what we want to see I suppose.

I go back to my original point though. Clarkson rates him. People need to get their head around that.

Totally agree.

I’m expecting another head scratcher 22, which starts with this board wanting blood, before calling Clarkson a genius post game.

He’s thinking outside the box, which is why I don’t expect the “obvious” changes that many here are suggesting.

I’d assume it’s just Goldy in given Darcy & Jackson. They’ll stick with the shorter back 6 IMO, given it needs time to gel and Freos lack of gun key forwards. Might bring in another elite runner given the weather.

It’s refreshing that match committee is no longer predictable.

Dawson was poor this pre season, not sure he has done anything to suggest he is ready.

I would like Clarko to go to Bonar and tell him he has free reign to get done holding the ball if he attacks, LDU style. He is overly tentative and it screams lack of confidence. It seemed he had started to turn this around pre season but that game was back to old habits. He has a few weeks to work this out as I would assume the 3 KP is the preferred option and I like Bergman and Goater as options

Wouldnt be surprised if they have Bonar earmarked as a Version2 of Gibbo.

The only thing spiller than saying Turner should be dropped is that Scott should be dropped.

Maybe longer term. They both have issues.

But they also do things others can’t/won’t and those things have been praised and valued by successive coaches, and more importantly our current master coach.

People who ignore the value of footballers who are prepared to sacrifice themselves for the team, do so at their peril. Without these players, the balance/structure goes out the window. It is true in any sport. Historically, I would say, West Ham, as an example, suffered heavily, due to ignoring the value of the role player. They were always beautiful to watch.

Straight off the top of my head, Miller was the chief instigator of two of our goals. Why would we ever even consider dropping him? It’s so obvious that he is only going to get better - poise, skill and tenacity.

This.

Goldy for X is the only change, unless there is another injury we didn't hear about.
We didn't get Corr over and pay him heaps to languish in the twos when he's right to play seniors. If he doesn't come in next week to replace Bonar then we're not serious about putting the best possible team out there.

What Turner offers (until we have a better option) is a component piece in the modern way to play football, which is to prevent the opposition exiting their D50; or put another way, defence is the foundation of offence. On which basis, Turner will be playing next week
Yep until we have a better option but until then he's a liability offensively.

Yeah, while I think the addition of Goldy and Corr is the most obvious selection decision he could make, after last weekend, I'd almost be disappointed if he doesn't do something loco, like say list Drury as the fullback.

And just as a general observation, I know the Dockers didn't look very effective yesterday, but hot damn our recent results against the Dockers are sobering.

Oh please, Bonar was good on Saturday apart from 2 errors but he consistently left his man to help others. Did you go the game at all? And Corr has had an interrupted preseason which is why he's in the VFL

Something to be aware of, turf issues at Optus

Ticking clock: Dockers want mid-week Optus training session

Fremantle are hoping the newly-laid turf on Optus Stadium will be ready in time for Wednesday’s training session despite the challenges faced by the MCG in the opening round of the season.

Huge sections of turf were re-laid at the MCG, Adelaide Oval and Optus Stadium after music superstar Ed Sheeran’s concerts earlier this month.

About 12,000 square metres is being replaced at Optus, costing more than $1 million, off the back of gigs from Sheeran and the Red Hot Chili Peppers across the past several weeks.

A spokesperson for the stadium said they were confident the turf would be ready for next weekend’s AFL double-header, with Fremantle playing North Melbourne on Saturday night before West Coast host Greater Western Sydney on Sunday.

While the MCG looked good from a distance, Geelong coach Chris Scott declared the decision to host a concert at the MCG just two weeks before round one was an “own goal”. Cats vice-captain Tom Stewart’s knee is in a brace after slipping early in the match.

Sam De Koning appeared to have suffered an injury after falling when no player was near him later in the game, but he finished the match.
The issue wasn’t as obvious during Thursday night’s game between Carlton and Richmond, but Blues star Sam Docherty admitted on Melbourne radio he had been concerned about playing on the surface and was surprised no injuries occurred.

Fremantle CEO Simon Garlick said the club was keen to train on the Optus Stadium surface mid week ahead of Saturday’s clash.

“We’re hopeful of getting on as early as Wednesday but it might be for our Captain’s Run on Friday,” Garlick said.

“It’s great for us to get an opportunity to see what the surface is like but it’s more the environment. We’ve still got some young players who haven’t played a lot of footy there so gettig to your home ground for a training session before the first time you play there for in an AFL game is really important.

“We’re in constant dialogue with Venues Live and Venues West about the work that’s being done to make sure Optus Stadium’s surface gets into the right condition that it needs to ahead of next week’s games. We’re very confident they’ve got the ability to do that well.

“They’ve proven they have in the past. We look forward to seeing what that’s like when we get on for a training run next week.”
Optus Stadium fixed large sections of the field last season after torrential rain and two soccer matches ruined the grass.

The field looked good for the match but players from both West Coast and St Kilda struggled to maintain balance. St Kilda’s coach at the time, Brett Ratten, warned there was a risk of legal action from players if injuries occurred.

“I wouldn’t like a player to get a long-term injury that (meant they) never play the game again, or something like that,” Ratten said.

“That is the worrying concern. If something did happen, would a player sue the ground? It has happened before.”

McCarthy and Hogan no longer a threat, so job done ... more seriously, Will Brodie will not get 37 touches this weekend; the fact that's his career high just confirms how bloody bad we were last year

Brodie won't get 37 but their midfield will be a solid test for ours.

Plus Cox and Pearce would have to be up there in the best 3 or 4 KPD pairings across the comp.

And how we match up in defence will be interesting.

Maybe something like this?

Ziebs vs Fyfe - Bonar/Corr v Treacy/Amiss - Lmac v Schultz/Walters
Goater vs Switto - Logue vs Taberner - Sheezel on Frederick

I watched the game from start to finish. Maybe it was different at the ground but from the broadcast I didn't notice Scott a huge amount.

As I said, I'm not saying he (or anyone) was terrible. But next week I want both Corr and Bonar in the backline so someone needs to be omitted and I picked Scott.
Poor choice Chad. Scott was good.
