Elliott out is a big blow. Him out for the season is a big reason we were not up to the level last year and a he's played a big role in our regain of form this year. Top 5 player on our list talent wise and our best forward.

However Fasolo putting his hand up mitigates his loss a bit. Really excited to have him back in the team. I never go to away games but he's one of the reasons I'll be at the G tomorrow. If he kicks a goal I want to be there to cheer him.

Langdon for Goldsack makes sense since Hogan isn't playing we don't need to be that tall but the one I'm surprised at is Ramsay ommitted. He didn't play well at all last week but we need his speed and agility as a small defender. Him being in the team allowed us to play Crisp at half back (one of his best games for the club last week) and Maynard closer to the ball which was a successful move in the past two games. With Ramsay out I feel Maynard will be pushed back to defence and Crisp on a wing for most of the game, and I fear for what a player like Garlett could do when manned by Smith or Langdon/Scharenberg.

At least I have more confidence this year than last in our ability to match their contested ball game with our stable top midfield of Pendles-Adams-Treloar, especially with Gawn out.

If Fas and WHE can offset Elliott's absence forward and Moore continues his good form we're in with a good chance but my big question mark is the defence and how we'll handle players like Garlett and Petracca forward.

This is the Melbourne Grand Final, they'll be right up for this, and with the changes we've been forced to make it concerns me somewhat.

It is a MUST that we start well. Total non-negotiable.
Their Grand Final but maybe our first final (chance to make one) for e few years. So if we don't win this one, we don't want it badly enough.

Fasolo could kick a few if he plays his best

I think tomorrow Fas will play with a freedom he hasnt had this year. Wouldnt be surprised if he turns it on and kicks 3-4 goals. Im sure his playing will be a spur to the rest of the team.
Also wouldnt be surprised if Brown shows a fair bit tomorrow.

We have had Problems with Quick Small Forwards in the Past and Petracca is a Beauty

I'm liking our small defensive setup, they will probably 1 key forward-Tom Mcdonald and even he isn't a natural KPF and isn't very big either.

It's not our GF. It's not even our biggest home & away game anymore.

It's 4 points. Nothing less nothing more.

I don't know why Collingwood supporters feel beating their mob is any great big notch on the belt. It's not.

Cool. Can we get it as a home game every second year then?

We don't

This is just another game for us. Teams like the Saints and Dees see Collingwood as some big rivalry in their own little worlds.

I'm sure you club will sometime this year ask the afl to rotate this game as a home game for Collingwood every second year. If not be grateful that Collingwood helps fill your coffers as we do almost all clubs, remember it's not nice biting the hand that feeds you

Don't be petulant. For years, even in the Dees lengthy period as a non entity, the Dee fans flocked to the G on the Queen's Birthday clash in numbers not seen for the rest of the year. Melbourne players also" got up" for the occasion and often played with an intensity lacking in most of their home and away games. I recall Malthouse commenting on this once. We are clearly still a big notch in the belt for the fans of most clubs. Now that you are a better team you are getting more "big" games..but we were your only big game for many years. Fact.

Haha, poor old Dean, let's assume you got the power and could do both things.

The AFL seemingly has us playing twice a year in recent times I don't see why it couldn't rotate, we've got our shit together and everything about Melbourne is improving.

Membership numbers and crowd numbers have been steadily rising over the years and I don't see that going down in the near future.

Especially with us gaining this Anzac Eve clash with Richmond which was right up there in attendance with the Anzac Day game, it makes sense for it to rotate.

I'd go with something along the lines of:

Melbourne vs Richmond @ MCG Anzac Eve
Essendon vs Collingwood @ MCG Anzac Day
Richmond vs Essendon @ MCG Dreamtime
Collingwood vs Melbourne @ MCG Queens Birthday

Then just flip the fixture the next season.

Agree with you and well put, I think Melbourne has earned the right to play in blockbuster games, I really rate some of your players especially Hogan, Petracca

No problem.

And I've always appreciated Collingwood's philanthropy in this regard.

Every club wants to play Collingwood at the 'G, which is why you play the most games there and have less interstate travel. It's hardly Collingwood's fault though, as you're top of the agenda for other clubs in their fixture wish list. These fixture benefits is perhaps why it's been a benevolent gift from Collingwood on QB.

But I'm not against change.

The rivalry between the two clubs is long gone. It was once the greatest in the VFL. We love our 6 flags from 7 grand finals against the Pies, but due to our ineptitude any previous rivalry is but a distant memory and hardly relevant today.

We're contracted to play 14 games at the 'G as compensation for the MCC giving up their right to host both preliminary finals. The break down is always 9 home, 5 away. The flip side to those away games is we're forced to play 2 home matches at Etihad each year, which always includes one against an Etihad tenant. For comparison Melbourne also plays 14 games (9 home, 5 away) at the 'G in 2017.

In terms of interstate away games since the introduction of GWS we've always travelled interstate 5 times per season and in 2017 out of all Victorian teams it's actually Melbourne who travels less for interstate away games:

6) St Kilda (includes Hawthorn), Carlton, Essendon, Geelong, Richmond
5) Collingwood, Hawthorn, North (includes Hawthorn), Western Bulldogs
4) Melbourne (includes North)
